Kapera

Kapera knocked on Cyradis' office door. She had noticed the Weyrwoman
returning there more often now that the eggs were beginning to harden,
so she was hoping the senior goldrider was there. They could have this
conversation in the Hatching Grounds, but it felt easier to talk work
in a real office.

Cyradis sighed where she sat with her feet tucked up under her on her
couch. "Come on in," she called out.

Kapera pushed open the door, came in, and hovered. "I come with
Infirmary reports and some news from Threadfall."

"Oh good," she said and patted the couch next to her.

Kapera settled down onto the couch and stuck the hides on a convenient
table. "Panitath still on loyal guard?" she asked.

"She is," Cyradis smiled knowing Kapera would understand. "But Loseth
is close to persuading her to allow him to guard while she gets her
bath. Even Donneth has tried to help by bringing treats for Loseth to
give her."

"That's good. Riyanth is bad enough with her regular clutch. I can't
imagine how she'd be with a gold egg, since she's never laid one."
Much to Kapera's own internal dismay.

She sobered as she tapped the hides. "Today's Threadfall was a
surprisingly rough one, so there's a few pieces of wing and weyrling
news I have for you."

"Oh?" Cyradis' brows knit in a worried frown. "How bad?"

Kapera knew that Cyradis would likely have heard some of the events of
the Threadfall via her dragon, but since she didn't know how much
Panitath was passing on, she chose to give a full explanation even if
it was a bit redundant.

"Anaeryth's weyrling class was delivering firestone today. Gulbeth
appeared to deliver stone to Savith. The first throws were failures,
so Savith moved out of position to make it easier on the weyrling. A
clump of Thread menaced them both, Savith tried to flame it and
evaded, but the weyrling green didn't move out of the way and both
rider and dragon were badly scored," Kapera explained.

"I spoke with the Healers, and the injured pair are stable for now.
Jevila is in a lot of pain, so they're treating with painkillers and
Riyanth is keeping an eye on Gulbeth whenever her rider goes out.
Their biggest concern is the scores getting infected and compromising
the health of one or both."

"As for our wing's pair, Riveenata was slightly inattentive in drill
the other day, and I thought it was just because her green was due to
rise. But a significant mistake like shifting out of formation and not
checking for clear airspace before a stone delivery is another issue.
I'm concerned she's a danger flying in the wing, so she's grounded for
two sevendays and on night watch duty."

Now that she'd explained the details, Kapera took a moment to sigh.
"Her records from River Bluff showed her to be a good rider, but so
far she hasn't been living up to it, especially with a mistake like
this. In addition to the punishment, I sent her to the Healers for
sessions with the mindhealer to see if something is going on to cause
this."

"I've seen her records," Cyradis said at first. "Didn't she take
advantage of the Mindhealers when she first came? I thought we'd made
it clear they all needed to take some time to adjust."

"I believe you made that clear to them, but apparently any meeting she
had with them was ineffective. I made it clear that I require a
Master's clearance before she can fly again, I hope that's sufficient
of a kick to get her to shape up."

Cyradis nodded. "Good, Thank you Kapera. You handled that well. It
isn't easy for anyone that came from Riverbluff but unless she can
pull it together we'll have to find other duties for her until she
can." It wasn't as if the Queen's wing was the most dangerous place to
be in the skies.

Kapera paused and gave Cyradis a smile. She had been hoping Cyradis
wasn't going to override her decision on how to handle it. To hear
that the older Weyrwoman thought that she'd done the right thing made
her feel warm inside. "I tried to be fair but also to do the right
thing for the entire wing, so thank you," she said.

"Speaking of the wing, I know Anaeryth's clutch will be graduating
this month. There were twenty-five in the clutch. How many were you
thinking of for our wing?"

"I'd like to give the other Wingleaders first choice, but I also think
it's time to move J'ackt into N'vanik's wing. I don't think he'll
learn anything more here and maybe it will give him something else to
think about."

"He's going to be so excited by that news," Kapera said. "I know he's
been chafing at the bit to fly up there. Or at least that Zith has."

"I hope so," she smiled. "Though I've come to expect a bad attitude no
matter what we do."

"Hopefully his desire to impress N'vanik will make integrating easier.
I think J'ackt respects him more."

She chuckled. "I think J'ackt has an old fashioned view of women. Even
if we have proved it more than once, he naturally respects male
authority more. I doubt he even realizes it."

"I hope the transfer goes well for him. Do you want to tell him, or
pass the message to N'vanik and have him say it?"

"I think N'vanik can tell him of our decision." She smiled. She and
her Weyrleader had an excellent working relationship and she valued
it.

"Anything else about the wing you think we need to go over right now?
I've hit all the points I thought were key, but maybe you noticed
something else."

"No, I think we're good," she said. Things finally seemed to be coming
together with Kapera and Cyradis was proud of her.
