An Exit Interview

Writers: Avery, Paula
Date Posted: 4th December 2017

Characters: L'pin, A'be
Description: L'pin conducts an exit interview with A'be
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 9 of Turn 9

L'pin smiled at the next weyrling as he came into his office.

"Please, take a seat," he said, gesturing at a platter of cookies and
a variety of drinks he'd had set out for the purpose of the chat. He
found that everyone seemed happier if there was something around to
eat or drink, even if they didn't immediately partake.

"Thank you, sir," A'be replied and took the offered seat. He looked
the offerings but didn't yet reach for them.

"It's hard to believe that weyrlinghood is almost over for you. I
wanted to have a conversation with you about your training and make
sure you're feeling ready to graduate. If there's anything you feel
you haven't quite grasped, we can go over it. Or if you need to talk
about anything that's happened..."

L'pin let that part trail off. There had been some injuries in the
weyrling class, and people had reacted differently to them.

A'be cocked his head and looked bit puzzled. When he had been growing,
people never wanted to talk to him, or hear what he had to say unless
it was just: yes, sir. He shrugged and said gruffly: "I felt we were
doing well at the classes, Uljath and me. Some of the stuff than
required writing or reading wasn't my cup of klah. Good thing
blueriders aren't expected to do much hidework." He could read and
write and that's about it, he had skipped quite a few of his harper
classes.

"Not unless you become a wingthird or a teacher like me, but that'd be
a few Turns out," L'pin said. "You'd feel all right with the sweep
reports and those?"

"I can manage," A'be shrugged. "I my be bit slow but I get them done."
He presumed it was something time and practise was going to correct.

L'pin mentally resolved to recommend him to a wing with a leader who
was going to be more relaxed about it.

"Your work in flaming practice and firestone delivery were both really
good too," L'pin added.

"Thanks, I find it rather easy," A'be said. When you're worked in a
fishing ship in a rough weather, you learned thing or two about
staying aware of what was happening and to value teamwork.

"Has Uljath started showing any interest in chasing yet?" he asked.
Some of the class' greens were Rising already.

"He's watching them, Flights and I can feel him thinking: hmm, maybe I
should too. But he's not chased yet," A'be replied.

"You're alright with the fact that you could wind up with either a
male or a female greenrider?" he checked.

A'be let out an amused snort. "Look, pretty much first thing I did
after arriving to the Weyr was bedding the man who Searched me."

L'pin had to laugh at that. "That's the most reassuring response I've
gotten out of any of the Searched in greenriders and blueriders out of
this clutch, I hope you know."

"I'm glad someone approves," A'be said.

"It's a Weyr, it's not an unusual behavior. Many young men and
women find themselves embracing the more open attitude towards sex and
sexuality, but often it takes them a bit longer than a few days," the
older bluerider said. "It certainly took _me_ longer."

"What can I say? He's so gorgeous," A'be replied sheepishly. He had
been repressing himself so long that he had just instantly taken the
opportunity and threwn all caution to the wind. "Oh, and apparently I
have relatives in the Weyr," he added. "That's still being
investigated."

"Oh, really?" L'pin asked, his curiosity piqued. "You're discovering a
lost sibling or something similar?"

"More like a host of cousins I didn't know about," A'be replied. "If
the working theory we got is correct."

"Oh, that sounds fascinating."

"More like overwhelming," A'be replied. "It was always just me, mom
and grandparents. Sure, my mother has siblings, but they never wanted
anything to do with me."

"And now there's a whole big crowd to get to know? Sounds overwhelming."

"And apparently green flights to avoid," A'be sighed.

"Ah yes, that can be a problem. I know occasionally related gold and
bronze riders Impress and have to worry about it as well."

A'be just nodded.

"Well, if there isn't anything else you need to speak with me about,
then I think we're good. I've really enjoyed your presence in this
class, A'be. I'm sure your future Wingleader will see how hard you've
worked. I know you'll serve the Weyr well."

He offered his hand to A'be for the official rider clasp.

A'be replied to the clasp. "You've been a great teacher," he said. He
was eager to join the fighting wings but he knew he was going to miss
the weyrling days too.
