K'yne

He'd nearly forgotten that he had the necklace. It was just a simple
chain with a dragon pendent on it, but Ocktima had worn it
exclusively. K'yne could close his eyes and remember in detail the way
her smiling face looked with the pendent winking and catching the
light. After she'd lost Marloth and left the Weyr, she'd left the
necklace behind on his dresser. He'd clung to it for a long time, worn
it for a while, but then as the Turns faded he had shoved it into a
box in a drawer, forgotten.

Now K'yne stood on the edge of Arinoth's ledge with the necklace
clenched in his hand, blue eyes surveying the Weyr as it roused out of
sleep. He knew what he wanted to do with the necklace, only, he wasn't
sure how to go about it. If he showed up at Dolphin Cove he doubted
that J'ackt would even see him, or that they could get two civil words
out between them.

**I may be his father but I'm not his dad.** To K'yne there was a
significant difference between the two. Ocktima had stripped him of
the opportunity to be a dad. He wanted to hang on to his anger and
bitterness over that, but whenever he thought of her and how she died,
the anger turned to ash within him.

Striding back into his Weyr, K'yne penned a short letter:

"J'ackt,
this necklace belonged to your mother. She would want you to have it.

-K'yne"

There were no other pleasantries in the note because he knew that
J'ackt wouldn't want, or expect, any. K'yne folded the letter around
the necklace and then sealed it in an envelope. He would take it down
to one of the riders on transportation duty and have him deliver it to
Dolphin Cove.

~*~

The letter was handed to him in the evening and J'ackt hadn't opened
it. He had questioned the transport rider where it had come from and
from whom, debated on sending it back unopened, but finally took it.
It lay on his table untouched as he bathed, his mood darkened by its
arrival.

**What does he want? And why write?** J'ackt emerged from the bath,
toweling off with his eyes still on the delivery. He was still tempted
to send it back; there was little K'yne could offer that he would
want. But curiosity ate at him. Sighing, he finally sat and with a
dagger sliced the package open.

The little necklace fell with a little tinkle onto the table. J'ackt
frowned, picking it up carefully, then read the enclosed note. He
frowned and turned his gaze back to the necklace. His hand closed
around it as an ache passed through him. He swallowed, then opened his
hand again to look at the delicate piece of jewelry. He considered it,
turning it over and then put it down.

He drew out his own writing implements and with careful but
unpracticed letters, he wrote under K'yne's words.

"If you cared for her, then keep it since she left it with you." He
paused and his jaw worked back and forth before he carefully
considered his next written words, looking at the necklace before he
put them on the hide. "My mam must have liked you."

He stuck the letter back in, then carefully slid the jewelry back
inside. He resealed it and had Zith call to the next transport rider.

~*~

K'yne shook his head as he opened the return letter and let the
necklace slide into his hand. The boy really was stubborn, **Like his
mother.** The brownrider held the necklace clenched in his hand for a
long moment before the decision finally came to him. He knew exactly
what he would do with the necklace....
