Description: A hurricane is on the way and DCW has one day old dragonets to care for!
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 18 of Turn 9
Loranth crooned, a worried undertone to the slender brown, as he
looked with his weyrmate to the churning sea and to the black cloud a
few miles off shore. It churned and curved in the sky, its pattern
only meaning one thing.
**Loranth, ask Chaneth's to meet me in the hatching grounds**
Sh'del clutched his aching head and turned away from the incoming
storm, going straight into the weyrling barracks. "Come Tacara," he
said to the greenrider who was his assistant. "Wake the girls and I'll
attend to the lads. Just get them up and to the hatching grounds quick
as you can, but stay calm." The young girl nodded and jumped to her
feet. Sh'del sighed heavily, hoping she_would_stay calm. Last thing
they needed was the new gold panicking. Well, there was no time to
fret about that.
He walked into the boys' side to wake them up.
Dessa and Santhiath were already woken up. Santhiath was peering out
from the barracks.
}: I don't like the look of that,:{ Santhiath said, her attention
fixed to the threatening sky.
Dessa looked out too. **Me either, looks like a storm,** she replied
and started hastily to pull on some clothes.
Cyradis felt the warning in the air and from her lifemate. **Call them
to you in the hatching cavern,** She asked. **We must keep them out of
the winds. They'll be safe in the back of the cavern.**
}:Come to me hatchlings:{ she commanded. }:Bring yours to shelter
under my wings:{
Cyradis sent another quick message to K'sedel to have the meat buckets
brought to the cavern to feed the hungry little ones. She'd never had
a storm this bad right after a hatching and it concerned her to make
sure that all thirty seven of them arrived safely. **Please ask
Loseth to protect them on the way to the cavern.**
Loseth landed in the Bowl between the barracks and the Hatching
Cavern, his whirling with a hint of concern. His protective instincts
were in overdrive with such young hatchlings and a new Queen to
protect. The storm was half a day earlier than the prediction from the
Dolphin Hall, but at least it hadn't come in the middle of the night.
N'vanik tried to soothe his bronze as he watched from the ledge.
**They're not in danger yet, we'll keep them safe.**
}:Do not be afraid, the storm is not here yet,:{ Loseth told his
weyrlings. }:But you must get somewhere safer before the strong winds
come.:{
"Huh, wa?" T'lin mumbled as Calaroth nudged him awake.
}:They say there is a big storm and we must move. What is a storm? Can
I see it?:{
T'lin sat up blinking and noticed some of his fellow weyrlings looking nervous.
Spotting Loranth, Santhiath walked over to him. }: What's going on?
Anything I can do? :{ she asked the big brown.
Loranth gave the tiny queen an affectionate nuzzle. }:Could you
command your hatchmates to come to the Grounds? It's safer there and
you will all be out of the winds.:{
Panitath crooned once again and summoned her children. }:Santhiath,
bring your clutch mates safe to me.:{
Mefeth gave a cry of distress and tried to unfurl her pale green
wings. Famera looked up at the Weyrlingmaster and then turned to head
out into the bowl and toward the hatching cavern leading her lifemate
toward safety
Sh'del nodded to himself as Famera and Mefeth into the hatching
grounds. He reached out briefly to Loranth.
}: Panitanth? Mine would like to ask yours if she could do a quick
headcount?:{ It would help a lot to know just how many more had to get
to the grounds.
A change to tell other what to do and boss them around? Santhiath was
loving it and got to it straight away. Dessa watched with kind of
bemusement when she made sure every dragonet was wide awake, even if
meant pushing someone out of their coach. She didn't hesitate to offer
a comfort either, Dessa noted. When one of the green's showed signs of
a panic, Santhiath crooned at her, talked her with calm, gentle tone
and got her calmed down and moving towards the Hatching Cavern. This
was what she was born to do, Dessa realized, to handle crisises. When
there weren't one, she was demanding and possessive. But when needed,
she was caring and protective.
V'rel's habit of wakefulness at dawn for his runs meant he'd been
awake and dressed already when Sh'del came into the barracks. He'd
hoped to get the chance to ask of someone on the weyrlingmaster's
staff whether it would be okay to go for a run in the mornings, before
the morning duties of feeding and bathing dragonets started. But
Sh'del looked too serious to interrupt, and his news told him why.
**Come on, Rymeth,** he told his lifemate, touching the blue's
headknobs gently to rouse him. **We've got to leave the barracks
because of a storm.**
}:Storm?:{ Rymeth asked.
V'rel felt an odd sensation, like his memories of 'storm' were being
pulled from his mind and rifled through. Images of rainfall, of
thunderstorms, and of powerful hurricanes like the one that had
flooded the Dining Cavern and forced the evacuation of Nyith's eggs
all ran through his mind's eye.
}:I want to see this storm,:{ Rymeth said, now that he knew what it was.
**We can't see it. We're supposed to tag along and leave. Come on.**
Most of the male weyrlings were getting dressed and leaving the
barracks already. If they didn't hurry along, they might get yelled
at.
Yet he wanted to do one thing first. V'rel dug into his trunk, even
though he was already dressed, and pulled out the small bag in which
he kept crafting projects to fiddle with - it could be slung over his
shoulder and if they were going to be sheltered for awhile it might be
good to have something to do with him. He wasn't sure if they were
going to be having classes or what...
R'fal woke from an uneasy sleep to find himself looking straight into a large
pair of faceted eyes, their blue-green colour tinged with swirls of anxious
yellow. He yelped in amazement and sat up in bed as a mixture of emotions -
love, worry and a sense of urgency - swept over him.
}: Do not be scared! It is only me. I am sorry that I woke you, but Panitath and
Santhiath say that we must go to the Hatching Grounds. :{
** Marlath? ** He rubbed his eyes, the events of the previous day and the
Hatching coming back slowly. He wasn't back home - he'd Impressed! There wasn't
time to think of that, though, as Marlath anxiously nudged his side with his
head. ** What's going on? It's still early. **
}: They say there will be a storm, and we will be safe there. Is a storm bad? :{
** I don't know, but we'd better go with the others. ** R'fal had never thought
of storms as anything to be too concerned about - the worst that had happened at
his home had been a few fallen trees - but he wasn't about to argue with
Marlath, let alone the gold dragons. He saw other boys around him getting
dressed, and hurried to pull on his own clothes so as not to be left behind.
