Description: A hurricane is on the way and DCW has one day old dragonets to care for!
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 18 of Turn 9
The Weyrlingmaster himself had taken the time to send some messages.
Firstly to the Headwoman to notify her of the situation, and request
that food and drink be sent to the weyrlings in the hatching grounds.
The second went to the beastcrafters, asking for some animals to be
brought to the caverns for butchering. Then he and Nikornath made
their way to the barracks, checking that nobody had decided to hide in
the back, or under their bunk.
The check was worthwhile, as a tiny green tail was visible from under
a curtain used to give the youngsters a semblance of privacy at times.
**Get her attention, please?** K'sedel asked of Nikornath.
}:Come out here little one, let me help you,:{ the large broinze said
gently. }: I know it's scary, but we want to help you.:{
Ranith was cowering under the curtain and didn't realize her tail was
poking out. Something was going on outside. Something that had scared
the dragons around her, from her fellow clutchmates to the big
dragons. Most importantly it was something that had scared her beloved
rider, Adoreia, to hear about. That meant it must truly be terrible.
}:Can't I stay here?:{ she asked Nikornath in a quiet mindvoice that
was shaking.
}: You'll be safe with me and the rest of the weyrlings,:{ Nikornath
told her. }: You and your rider, where is she? Will she talk to
mine?:{
}:And I will shield you, fair Ranith, if you will but come out and
follow back to the soundness of the hatching grounds!:{ offered
Maciath. The brown and K'don had been well on their way out, but
having noticed Ranith's fear and hesitation, Maciath could not help
but try to lend his own wing to convincing her to emerge.
}:Call back, if you can, and bring to mind that we must have stayed
sound there for a long time once before.:{ It may have been some time
ago, and dragon minds may have been slippery, but Maciath knew that he
once Hatched, and that Hatchings happened on the Hatching Sands. They
must have been safe there.
K'don lifted a hand to wave at his grandfather sheepishly. If he
insisted, K'don would nudge Maciath to leave Ranith to Nikornath and
Santhiath.
"Ke, K'don," K'sedel said quietly, with a slight stumble over his
grandson's newly elided name. "I know you want to help, and you can.
Go and make sure that Sh'del and L'pin know what's going on, and why
their headcount is one short. Tell them I'll have this pair out as
soon as possible." He knew that he could ask Nikornath to relay the
message, but if he let K'don feel like he was helping, chances are the
boy would get himself, and that fine young dragon of his to safety.
K'don smiled and stood up a little straighter. Having been given that
task, he felt quite a bit more resolute, and his resolve also spurred
Maciath to leave despite not having convinced Ranith to follow. He had
a task to finish!
"Aye, sir," he said, nodding and saluting before running to catch up
with the rest, Maciath bounding beside him.
}:My rider does not feel good. She is in the place. She will talk to
yours,:{ said Ranith, who was still behind the curtain. She provided
Nikornath a blurred image of the necessary she'd picked up from her
rider.
Her tail-tip was lashing now as she conferred with her rider.
Nikornath's attention was calming to the dragonet, but her rider was
still so clearly scared.
Adoreia had slept poorly and had been up and down during the night to
go to the nearest necessary to take care of bodily needs. She'd been
there when the weyrlingstaff assistant Tacara had come in and told the
other weyrlings they had to leave. Once she'd learned from Ranith what
was going on, she'd become scared and huddled in there.
Having been unable to sleep, Brinnjura had spent a great deal of time
staring at the ceiling of the barracks. She ached all over, from what
she wasn't sure - the work already put in as a new rider, the weather,
the new bed. She wasn't entirely sure, she just knew she wasn't
feeling well and she just wanted to remain still. But even that option
was about to be taken from her when Okalinath nosed at her side. }: We
must go. There's a storm. :{
A storm? Brinnjura blinked and glanced around, heard noises in the
dark that she connected to movements and decided it was best that she
force herself up. **What kind of storm, sweets?**
}: I think I heard one of the older dragons call it a hairy crane.
What's a hairy crane? :{
It took all Brinnjura had in her not to laugh and for two very
important reasons - it was a serious question, and it was a serious
matter. If it was the kind of storm that her dragon was implying it
was, then it was no laughing matter. She instantly felt terrible for
even considering laughing at all. **A very bad storm. We'll be fine
though... I just wish there was something I could do to help...**
}: Maybe at the barracks you can figure something out. But that's
where we must go. It is safe there. :{ Okalinath, little though she
might be, started to herd her rider in that direction, bugling softly
when she saw her golden sister. }: Santhiath, I brought Brinnjura to
the cavern, just as you said I should! :{
Panithath, the senior gold, sent an approving warble toward her newest
brood of children. Wind had begun to howl in the Weyrbowl outside.
}:Did you bring them all daughter?:{ Cyradis finally confirmed the
count with a sigh of relief as the last little green came through the
door.
Once all the weyrlings were inside Loseth joined his mate in the
Hatching Caverns so he could watch over the young gold and her
siblings. N'vanik had him broadcast the message that all drills were
cancelled and any visitors that had stayed the night and wanted to get
home needed to leave quickly.
}: They are all here, :{ Santhiath replied. She had stayed at the
entrance, taking a head count, well, Dessa had done the counting. }:
Even Ranith. {, she gave the green an affectionate nuzzle and then
looked around.
}: I'm getting hungry. Where' s my food? :{
Ranith and her rider had finally been coaxed to follow K'sedel into
the Hatching Grounds. Ranith nuzzled back at Santhiath, pleased by the
young gold's attention. Adoreia disappeared as soon as she could into
a gaggle of other girls.
While K'sedel and Sh'del had been working on bringing the weyrlings in
from the barracks, Chaneth had been working with a few larger dragons
to slaughter a few herdbeasts and bring their bodies into the Hatching
Grounds, so the weyrling dragonets could be fed.
}:Santhiath, we have brought some herdbeasts for you and your
clutchmates to eat. Your riders will be providing it to you shortly,:{
Chaneth told her.
While his dragon helped provide provisions, L'pin had been helping to
arrange inside of the Hatching Grounds to be a bit more liveable for
the group of weyrlings, including moving in some classroom items, and
sent word to have lower caverns workers bring in some food and items
to make sitting in the stands for the rest of the day more
comfortable. Those would hopefully arrive by the time the weyrlings
were done feeding.
"Alright riders, it's time to feed your dragonets," he said to the
assembled weyrlings. "After that, we'll set you up a little area of
the Stands where you can sit and be comfortable. You'll be the safest
people in the Weyr," he promised.
