Cyradis

Cyradis

U'kaiah had given the Weyrleaders his formal greetings in the receiving
line at the Hatching feast, but he was pleased to find the Weyrwoman
taking a load off her feet in a quiet corner once all the guests were
settled and most the food devoured. The dancing had started in
earnest, and he had already had a few turns on the floor. Soon he
would need to make his way to Dragonsfall for his son's birthday
party, but he wanted to have a chat with Cyradis before taking his
leave.

Holding out a glass of wine to the goldrider he gave her an
understanding smile. "I won't intrude on your solitude for long, Lady
Cyradis, but I was wondering if you would share a drink with me."

"As long as I don't have to put my shoes back on," she chuckled.
Utterly exhausted but triumphant with a successful hatching. "What do
you have," she reached for a glass.

"It's.. uh... wine. And it looks red to me." He was not going to
try to pretend to know anything about it in front of the daughter of a
Master Vintner. "I personally would go for a nice lager myself, but
it was what was on the tray."

Since she was very very familiar with what they had in the wine
cellars and had, in fact, been instrumental in selecting the service
for this event. "It will be great," she smiled. Then she signaled a
nearby drudge and sent him off on an errand to find that nice lager
for the bronzerider.

U'kaiah thanked her and took a seat. "May I leave this with you as
well?" he asked, setting his glass on the table. "I think that lager
will have to be my limit for the night. I have to go to Dragonsfall
soon."

"Full day for you," she smiled. "What's going on at Dragonsfall today?"

"My son's twelfth birthingday," U'kaiah said, raising a pretend glass
in a salute to the special event.

"Ahhh," Cyradis acknowledged with a twinkle and nod. "The big one!"

"Exactly." His mug of lager was set in front of him and he took it
with a quick word of thanks. After a good long sip, he closed his
eyes, licked the foam from his lips and let out an appreciative sigh.
"Oh yes. There is nothing like a good Southern lager."

"Glad you like it. I had it sent from the Hall just for the Hatching."

He nodded his understanding, remembering that she had told him that
her father had been a Master Vintner. "I'm sure they were all too
happy to oblige. Do you still have friends at the Hall?"

"Oh, quite a few," she nodded. "Many friends from my youth. I've
always tried to keep in touch. And my son is there so..."

"You're just spreading your progeny all over the Southern Continent,
aren't you," he said with a chuckle and a shake of his head. "How far
you've come, Lady Cyradis. I would not have imagined all this when
you were a young goldrider at Dragonsfall, but I am happy at the way
your life has turned out for you."

"Thank you," she smiled. "You know? I wonder if I remember you." Her
eyes grew a little far away. "Panitath always liked the young ones.
She lets children climb all over her. She always has, even from the
very beginning, and there are always a few who love to help wash her
and scratch her eyeridges. 'Though she says that tickles more than
scratches."

"I'm sure all the weyrbrats were scrambling to help you wash your
gold," U'kaiah shrugged as his eyes sparkled with amusement. "I may
have scratched her itches once or twice, but I doubt I would have left
an impression after all these Turns."

"They were, of course," she smiled. "But there were a few..." she
shook her head at the memory. "There are always a few precocious
ones. You know?"

"Oh yes." He smiled at a memory. "My son used to hide under Lady
Jaela's desk to surprise her. He was definitely one of those."

She leaned back and put a finger against her lips. "You know I
remember one boy who seemed to challenge himself by jumping over
dragons tails. Almost as though they were tunnelsnakes that might bite
his little legs." She shook her head with a grin. "He couldn't have
been much more than five or six turns. He was particularly exhilarated
when the tails twitched. Of course Panitath knew this and made it a
game to try and touch him when he tried."

The bronzerider's eyes sparkled. "Sounds like a child with way too
much energy. He must have driven his fostermother crazy."

"Oh yes I'm sure he did," she chuckled. "and he was like a little fish
when he got into the water with us. He made a new game there trying to
scare me by touching my legs when I was bathing Panitath."

"And you put up with that?" he asked with a laugh before taking his
last sip of lager.

"He was a cute kid," she smiled. "I've always loved kids, maybe that's
why I had so many myself."

U'kaiah smiled and ran his finger along the rim of his glass.
"Whatever happened to that kid, I wonder? Do you know?"

She chuckled, "Not a clue. He grew up, I expect, and became a trial to
all the women of the Weyr."

U'kaiah's grinned deepened. "No doubt. And probably doing his part
to fill the Weyr with more troublemakers. And speaking of which..."
He stood his feet and set his glass down on the table. "I have my
son's party to get to. But thank you for the beer and the chat.
Let's do it again soon."

"Good idea," she smiled. "Enjoy your party and say hi to Tavia if you see her."
