Description: A green flight today brings back memories of a green flight in the past.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 23 of Turn 9
**Are you going to catch her this time?** K'lvin asked as he crossed
through the Weyrbowl on his way to the flight rooms.
}:No one else will have her,:{ Xmrenth vowed.
The bronzerider hoped that his dragon was right, that certainly hadn't
been the case the last time Riveenata's green rose....
**Flashback**
The pulse of sudden hot emotion from her awakening dragon punched
Riveenata in the gut. She instinctively closed her eyes to reach out
to Savith and see what was disturbing the green, and the power of her
lifemate's need caused her to stumble into the wingmate she was
walking to the Dining Cavern to have dinner with.
"She's rising, gotta go," she blurted out to the brownrider who'd
steadied her, before changing her course to get back to the outside.
She checked in on her lifemate as she hurried, expecting to go to the
feeding pens. To her surprise, the green was already flinging herself
into the air, her wings catching the light of the late afternoon sun
as she arrowed high into the sky.
She was a little surprised that Savith hadn't stopped to blood first.
She knew not all green dragons blooded for their risings, not like the
golds who truly needed it, but Savith had before. **Must just be
impatient this time,** she concluded. She couldn't blame the green for
that, not when she'd been impatient for Savith to rise. What a
tempestuous, distractible mess her lifemate had been the last two
days. She'd suspected it was coming but hadn't realized it was going
to be so soon. It would be good to get the current of irritation and
an itchy, crawly skin that she had been feeling out of the way.
She wasn't the first person to make it to the cots. By the time she
got there, there were already a few chasers there. She slipped into
the middle of the forming circle and assessed who was there while she
still had some seperation from her green.
It seemed that K'lvin had only talked to Riveenata a few days prior
about being released from the healers so that Xmrenth could chase
again. She'd teased him that Xmrenth would be chasing all the greens,
and golds too. He'd laughed it off, but now as he edged through the
gathering of men, there was an overwhelming desire in his core to
_win_. As an experienced rider, K'lvin knew a large part of that was
thanks to Xmrenth, but he also was beginning to realize that some of
that intensity and desire came from within himself, without the aid of
his dragon. K'lvin felt the urge to stake a claim to Riveenata, with
or without Xmrenth's help.
He shoved that startling discovery aside to ponder later. There was no
room for other thoughts as Xmrenth brushed past a blue dragon in the
skies, edging his way nearer to Savith.
It was Chaneth who Xmrenth had moved past. The blue made a small
rumbling of discontent, eyes whirling in irritation before he shook it
off to refocus on the green prize before him. On the ground, L'pin's
eyes narrowed at K'lvin in a mirror of his dragon's agitation.
Savith was heading out to the sea, towards a bank of clouds that was
rolling in towards the Weyr. She wanted the males to catch her, but
not yet, not while she was still full of energy. They'd only just
begun the flight, they hadn't proven themselves to her yet.
In pursuit was a wide mix of males. The predominant chasers were blues
and browns, but there were a few bronzes, including Xmrenth and
Thadath. Bronzes were good. Savith liked them. She had vague memories
of having been won by bronzes before.
}:Who can follow me?:{ she challenged.
None could catch and claim her until they showed her what they could
do. And she wanted to see their stamina, but also their cleverness.
Could they follow her now, through the clouds? Which would drop
behind, disoriented, or foul themselves in the pack?
Iorath was rather confident that he could catch Savith, after all, what
was his competition? An retired bronze, Thadath, and a few blues and
browns? This was his flight to win! Even as the young bronze thought it
a figure nearly capsized him in midair as it barrelled past.
Dasveth! C'rin's brown made no apologies as he jostled for the right
position to be in when Savith grew tired or made a mistake.
}:I'll follow her.:{ Xmrenth growled. It had been months since he'd been
able to fly like this and his muscles and veins sang with adrenaline.
Thadath had eagerly been powering his way after the beautiful green.
He'd been lucky enough to leap off early and be at the front of the
pack. But when the green dove into the clouds, and so did the rest of
the pack, the young bronze found himself struggling to maintain his
competitive advantage.
Chaneth did not go into the clouds. He wagered the green would break
free of the clouds before she let herself be claimed, so he hovered
above and tracked her progress by flickers of green hides through the
clouds. But another canny dragon had tried the same trick and was
floating high as well, in his way.
Savith twisted and darted through the clouds for some time, occasionally
peering over her shoulder to look for her chasers, before bobbing up out
of the clouds and bugling a challenge again to see who had still
followed her.
Iorath had been twisting and ducking, skimming through the clouds to
be near to Savith when the wily green surfaced.
}:Gotcha!:{ He crowed in triumphant as he latched on to Savith.
Xmrenth snorted in disgust. To be outflown by a young bronze like
Iorath was insulting. The bronze plunged down toward the water to cool
off.
As K'lvin came spiraling back to himself he staggered a step or two
and then right into the arms of a willing flight moth.
As Savith twined her tail with Iorath's and exulted in the catch,
Riveenata threw herself into R'nar's arms and pressed her lips to his,
desperate to mirror her dragon's needs.
The other chasers began to drift away, looking for their own moths.
**End Flashback**
The first time Xmrenth had chased Savith it had caught K'lvin by
surprise, the intensity he felt toward winning Riveenata's flight, but
this time he was prepared for it, and he wanted to win.
