Description: The graduating Weyrlings get their Wing assignments.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 13 of Turn 9
A'be inspected himself from the mirror and adjusted the collar of his
tunic, then gave his hair one more brush. Then he decided he was ready
for today. The day he would graduate to the Fighting wings. He had
admit he was nervous and excited.
A'be walked to the ledge, where Uljath waited, already strapped. He
stopped to admire his dragon for a moment. Uljath was handsome blue,
with long, sleek body and sort of faded-blue colour.
He mounted and Uljath took him down. He met up with some of his class
mates before entering the Cavern.
N'vanik sat at the head table with the other Wingleaders, the knots
for his new wingriders beside him. The decisions had already been made
and now the weyrlings would find out where they would be placed. First
the Weyrlingmaster would hand out the knots for the new weyrlingstaff
assistants, as those would already know their placements due to their
age, but they were still graduating and needed to be included.
A'be had time just for a quick nod to Doria, who had turned out to be
a second cousin of his. He still hadn't internalized the fact his
grandfather was Sh'dori's uncle and he had a Weyr full of cousins and
second cousins.
Once all the Weyrlings arrived, N'vanik nodded to K'sedel to begin.
"Today is a day some of you thought may never come," the Weyrlingmaster
began. "But you worked hard, and you and your lifemates can really be proud
of yourselves. Most of you, that is those who are of age, will be joining
one of the wings. For the rest of you you'll be remaining with me and my
staff, but as part of us. Never forget that is also just as important a role
as flying fall, because you get to pass on your newly earned expertise to
the next class."
A'be was trying not to look too impatient. He knew speeches where
integral part of ceremonies like this. But he wanted to hear his wing
assignment _now_ !
He felt Uljath chuckle at his impatience. He was usually the excited
and bouncy one of them.
Doria and the other underage riders received their knots designating
them as weyrlingstaff assistants. Then the other Wingleaders stood,
carrying the knots for their new wingriders in their hands. There'd
been a few good-natured arguments over which of graduating pairs each
Wingleader would take, but everything had been settled. N'vanik was
taking the fewest as Hurricane was a demanding Wing and they had a
limited capacity for new, unseasoned pairs. His first choice was an
older boy who'd shown himself to be a quick learner and lived up to
the reputation of a steady brownrider.
Well, Doria's placement was hardly a surprise. A'be gave her a quck
grin before turning his attention back to the Wingleaders. It was like
standing on hot Hatching Sands again.
L'pin, standing a few steps behind K'sedel as was proper, was beaming
at the assembled group of weyrlings. This class had done well, and he
was proud of them.
After N'vanik and D'hol had made their first choices, K'ran picked up
a pair of knots and moved forward to choose his first new rider. He
moved past a few in the front and presented the knots he held in hand
to his chosen.
"A've, rider of Uljath. Welcome to Rapids Wing," he said solemnly.
"Thank you, sir," A'be replied, his chest swelling with pride. It
didn't matter to him which wing it was, it only mattered that he was
full fledged Wingrider now. Something a fatherless son of a drudge had
barely dared to dream when growing up. "I will not bring shame to your
Wing."
N'vanik was glad to see K'ran getting new riders. For however long he
and Rapids Wing were at Dolphin Cove, whether it be one Turn or ten,
he wanted them to feel like they were part of the Weyr.
K'ran was pleased by A'be's response when he took the knots. "We'll be
honored to fly with you at drills tomorrow." And he added the time of
Rapids' usual drills.
A'be nodded, speechless while the knots were attached to his shoulders.
Once all the new riders had their Wing knots, N'vanik nodded to
K'sedel to give a few closing remarks.
A'be's new wingmates gestured him to join them at a long table and he
walked over to them, wearing a wide, silly grin on his face. He get a
round claps to the back and welcoming greetings, this was truly a day
he would remember fondly for rest of his life. Almost as great as the
day he Impressed Uljath.
