She hummed as she quickly dressed in her flight garb. Her bag was
already packed because, of course, she'd known the hatching was coming
for weeks.
:}Loseth's is here for you{: Panitath informed her in a pouty voice.
**You know he has to take me to the hatching love,** she responded.
Golds got very protective of their eggs when other golds were nearby
and a Hatching wasn't the place for a struggle with her lifemate.
:}No I don't{: came the response and Cyradis snorted. They always
seemed to have this conversation.
**Yes he does,** she replied firmly and went to answer her door. "Good
morning," she smiled up at her handsome Weyrleader."
"Mornin'." He bent to kiss the small Weyrwoman's forehead. "All ready?"
"As I can be," she grinned up at him. "She's sulking as usual." They
both knew who 'she' was, of course. "She wouldn't want other queens at
her own hatching but doesn't understand they feel the same way."
"How selfish," he said lightly.
She pursed her lips and shook her head. "No, _Queen_." She turned and
walked to where the big bronze waited near her lifemate. "Good morning
Loseth," she said as she came near his great head. "You're looking
very handsome today."
His eyes whirled blue and he rumbled happily. "He loves Hatchings, and
he loves taking you."
}:I will keep her safe,:{ Loseth assured his mate.
}:You'd better,:{ Panitath grumbled even though she rubbed her head
against his neck affectionately.
Cyradis held her skirts aside and climbed lightly up into her seat.
She smiled as she adjusted her seat. "I love hatchings too," she said
to both the dragon and his rider.
With the Weyrwoman secure and his rider in place, Loseth took off,
climbing above the heights of Dolphin Cove. In a short time they were
spiraling above Dragonsfall among dozens of other dragons, humming
vibrating through the air. When Loseth found a spot to land, N'vanik
slid down and then offered Cyradis a hand. "My Lady." His tone was
warm and just a little bit possessive.
She gave him a wide smile and opened her arms to slide into his. "My
Lord," she said as she felt his arms around her.
N'vanik held on to her slightly longer than necessary before turning
to lead her into the Stands. There was space reserved for visiting
Weyrleaders as well as attending Lord Holders. The nice thing about
being at another Weyr's Hatching was that N'vanik wasn't expected to
chat with the hold folk as much. He and Cyradis weren't the hosts
here.
As they were in the midst of crowds beginning to swarm into the
cavern, she slipped her hand into N'vanik's to make sure they stayed
together. But then she heard a familiar voice.
"Hello," R'enh grinned from ear to ear as he met them at the cavern
entrance. "I've been watching for you two."
"R'enh!" N'vanik pulled his friend into a hug. "Good to see you!"
"Good to see you too," he chuckled as he thumped his friend on the
back. Then he turned to Cyradis, "Beautiful as always Cyradis," and
bowed over her hand.
"Oh come here," she said dropping N'vanik's hand and hugging R'enh
herself. "We've missed you," she smiled. "Hows life as a Wingleader
treating you?"
He returned the hug. "You should be asking me about life with twins,"
he grinned back at her. "I think that's more of a challenge." He
turned and pointed up at the dignitary's box close to where the
Weyrleaders would sit. "We have seats up there," he motioned with his
head for them to follow him.
N'vanik gestured for Cyradis to go first as they followed R'enh up.
"Everybody doing good? Healthy?"
R'enh twisted sideways threading his way through the crowds to the
right aisle and then up to the box. "Judging from their lungs, they're
just fine," he chuckled. "Here we are," he pointed to their seats then
took his next to them. "We had no idea she was carrying twins though,
it came as a shock."
"I know I sent you a letter but it's not the same as saying it in
person, so congratulations," N'vanik said. "I miss you, but I'm proud
of you and I'm glad you're happy."
"Thanks," R'enh said sincerely. He and N'vanik had been friends for
Turns and truthfully he hadn't made any close friends since he'd come
to Dragonsfall. It had all been about getting his wing in order and
supporting Saibra through their pregnancy. He missed those times of
close friendship, even if they hadn't talked a lot lately. "Means a
lot coming from you." He clapped his friend on the shoulder and gave
it a brief squeeze. "Mind if I steal your Weyrwoman for a dance
later?"
N'vanik chuckled. "Not at all, but that's really up to her."
"I don't know," she shook her head. "You're an awfully fancy dancer."
She butted her shoulder against N'vanik. "I think he's more my speed."
"I can tone it down to his level," R'enh grinned his insult at his friend.
"You think I'm _boring_?" N'vanik glared down at his Weyrwoman.
She giggled up at him. "Only when you're dancing vertically," she
quipped. "Horizontally, you're very talented."
R'enh couldn't help laughing and slapping his knee.
N'vanik snorted. "Well, I guess if I had to pick _one_ of those to be
good at..."
Then the candidates came marching in and the volume of the crowd rose.
Cyradis leaned closer to N'vanik and said. "We'll dance later. Pick
your best dance," she grinned.
N'vanik wondered if that was only a tease or if it was an invitation.
They didn't share a bed often. Cyradis was happily weyrmated and
N'vanik had Talryne and a few other lovers. But the Dolphin Cove
Weyrleaders also had an understanding, sharing intimacy once in a
while outside of Flights.
The intriguing possibility of a special night together could wait. The
big event was about to start, and even after watching so many
Hatchings, N'vanik never grew tired of the excitement and wonder.
"Oh here we go," R'enh said and clapped as the candidates trooped onto
the Sands.
Cyradis smiled at N'vanik remembering their own Hatchings. She
squeezed his hand.
The humming grew louder, everything in the Hatching Cavern vibrating.
And then the first egg began to rock. Watching dragonets choose their
lifemates, seeing Candidates' eyes light up with Impression, it was
always a wonderful experience.
}:I knew you were right. I knew we'd be strong together.:{ Loseth's
warm tone came with a wave of love across their bond.
