"Wingthird?" the drudge knocked timidly on the door of the
greenrider's weyr. He wasn't really that intimidated by a woman, but
he had been at the look on the Wingleader's face who had told him to
deliver the letters. He hoped he hadn't messed up any of the
instructions.
"Yes?" Jeyme swung her door open, eyebrow raised at the drudge's appearance.
"A letter for you, ma'am."
Jeyme's brow furrowed further. "From who?" she asked, but the drudge
merely shoved the letter into her hands and then fled down the
corridor.
**Odd,** she thought with a shake of her head as she took the letter,
closed her door, and retreated into her weyr to read it. Her name was
scrawled on the front of the letter in penmanship that she recognized-
D'hol.
Ripping the letter open, she unfolded it with curiosity.
"Jeyme,
Like others, you are probably wondering why the dragons have keened
for Yumath and myself. I have been ill and it has steadily worsened
the past two months. There has been pain and I have borne it, but the
recent increase has left me with few choices, all of them unpleasant.
You know me well and know that I could not do anything other than what
I have done. I hope you can understand and can forgive me for it.
I write to you not only because of what we have been to each other,
but also to tell you what I could not in person. I deeply regret the
pain that I caused you and please never doubt that I did indeed love
you very much, but it wasn't as much as you really deserved. I am
truly sorry that I couldn't give you what you needed. Unfortunately,
you bore the brunt of my inability to put my past behind me and look
at what I had before me. I should have let you flower as a young woman
in the weyr ought and not wrapped you up in my own troubles and anger.
The fact that you had to leave your home to become the woman you are
now is something I will always regret.
What I do not regret is that you were a wonderful lover and weyrmate,
even to someone as difficult as myself. You are a wonderful mother to
our son. I have every faith that he will grow strong and proud and
look after both of his sisters, even when they wish him not to. I ask
that you remember your promise to me, Sweet. Please tell him that his
father was a good man and a proud dragonrider. Tell him that his
father loved him very much.
And please, Sweet, never doubt that you always held a piece of my
heart. I hope that you find the happiness that you deserve.
D'hol"
Jeyme's insides turned to ice as the full meaning of the letter washed
over her. **Quinneth! Where is Yumath?**
}:He is... not in the Weyr.:{ Quinneth answered, not completely
understanding her rider's sudden distress.
Jeyme's eyes flew back to the letter, focusing on the words "ill" and
"steadily worsened." She had thought that he hadn't seemed like
himself as of late, but whenever she had tried to pry for information
about it he had waved it off as nothing.
Her mind raced, heart thundering in her chest as she zeroed in again
on the words, "never doubt that you always held a piece of my heart,"
causing her throat to close up with tears. Her primary insecurity the
entire time they had been together, and then afterwards, was that he
had never really loved her, that his heart had been too consumed with
Cyradis to give her a piece.
Tears blurred her vision, obscuring the letter from view.
**Quinneth you need to tell Panitath that- **
}:Yumath has returned to the Weyr! He is with Panitath's in the
Weyrbowl.:{ Quinneth confirmed
Relief slid through Jeyme, weakening her knees to the point that she
sank into the nearest chair. **Thank Faranth,** she pressed the letter
to her chest; knowing that he had returned, that he wasn't gone, and
that she would have an opportunity to punch him in the arm for scaring
her to death with the letter.
