"More light," Solmon said as he walked through the room checking the
area prior to having Reptin set up the tools they would need. It was
a good space and fairly well lit but for what they were planning
they'd need to be prepared with more light.
Y'gel walked into the room to confirm what Panitath had just told
Aughashyth. "He's consented to have the surgery."
"Tomorrow," Solmon said and looked at Urlene. "Is tomorrow good?"
"Yes. First thing in the morning." Urlene was unused to having someone
inspect her surgery area or a stranger assist in preparation, but kept
her focus on disinfecting her own tools and gathering what she knew
she'd need. "We'll need a steady supply of heated blankets with an
apprentice at the fire and another ready to rotate them out at need.
Reptin, do you have the fresh syringes?"
Reptin, a tall thin man, looked at Urlene over his shoulder. "Theyr'e
all set," he confirmed.
"Good, thank you." Urlene laid out her tools on a small table,
checking them. "D'hol's a slender man, so I'm hoping we don't have to
delve too deeply. We'll need a heated rod so Y'gel can cauterize to
keep the bleeding under control." She ticked over the other
necessities in her mind. "Plenty of padding and gauze. Someone will
have to constantly monitor his breathing and heartbeat." Now in her
element, she moved briskly and with far more confidence. And be sure
to get plenty of rest, Reptin. This could take candlemarks."
"Yes," Solmon nodded. "It could but I've been there before and will
know what we're seeing the moment you open him up." He walked around
the table so he was looking across at her. "Let me see your hands."
"I hope so. Luvin's notes were uncertain. Even so, whatever pains him
should be removed, if possible. My concern is that removing it will
cause more damage than letting it remain." Urlene held up her hands
without asking. The delicate fingers were long, but uncalloused and
clean.
"Good," he nodded "Rock steady, not a twitch. Your hands will be the
first thing after your feet to get tired. "Y'gel, get some good large
hides in here to put on the floor by the table. I want them four
layers deep and tacked to boards so they don't move."
"Got it," Y'gel turned and left the room to get exactly what his uncle
had ordered.
Solmon smiled then he was no longer smiling as he looked deep into her
eyes. "If it's fatty tissue we'll operate. If not, we'll just close
him up and let him take his dragon for a final ride. Clear?"
"I've performed complicated surgeries before. I know. This will
be the most complicated, but I'm up to the task." She hadn't thought
of the mat that he described. "But the mat will help, thank you. I've
never heard of doing that." Her face was calm as he continued, not
even glancing at Y'gel as he left. "Very clear. I don't want him open
any longer than absolutely necessary."
"One more thing and I'll go get my dinner and some rest." he smiled.
"You've got more brains in your little finger than I've ever seen in a
pretty girl. Don't you let them take this away from you." he winked
and started to turn away. "Oh and wear your most comfortable shoes."
Urlene's brows rose, then a pleased expression lit in her eyes. Her
chin lifted with pride at finally being recognized for her skill
instead of her looks. She had craved that recognition from the moment she
had begun her apprenticeship. "My face is the least important thing
about me, Master Solmon. Don't worry, I won't. They can't."She
inclined her head. "I hope you enjoy your dinner." She strode briskly
to stand beside Reptin. "What else do you think you'll need to
assist?"
Y'gel came back in with a couple of Apprentices following him. "The
hide platforms," he said, "and an operating tent to put over us all." He
looked up at the rocky ceiling above them. "Not like we can wash
that." He wouldn't want any critters or dirt or who knows what else
dropping into the patient. "Reptin, can you help me get it set up?"
"One second," Reptin said to the dragonrider so that he could address
Urlene's question. "I've brought everything that should be needed.
I've assisted Master Solmon for the last several months. He speaks
highly of you," the thin healer said with a lift of his eyebrows as if
to say that Solmon rarely did that for anyone. The journeyman turned
then to assist Y'gel and the apprentices in setting up the tent.
Urlene's eyebrows quirked up at Reptin's comment; the MasterHealer had
never met her before but seemed jovial sort. **Hmmm** Perhaps it was
just her perception of him. Finished with her own setup, she walked to
help the men, only to have her little Stitch swoop down from above and
light on her shoulder. She stroked his soft brown hide, but kept him
back before his curiosity could tangle the lines they were setting.
Once that was done, Y'gel brushed his hands together and smiled at
Reptin. "I've got a visiting chamber with your name on it. I can show
you where the dining cavern is and have arranged to have a tray
brought to your room at sunrise. The Master is staying with Briata and
me this evening." He turned his smile on Urlene and her flit, "I'll
see you in the morning,"
