**Don't damage the relationship with the Hold. Don't damage the
relationship with the Hold. Don't damage the relationship with the
Hold.** N'vanik repeated the thought to himself as he waited with
Cyradis in the Council room. Another thought ran in counterpoint: **He
wanted to punish J'ackt in public.** After the incident where J'ackt
had fought Grevan's father in the Bowl, things had gotten heated
between Lord Corowal and the Weyrleaders. Corowal hadn't outright said
what punishment he wanted to give J'ackt, but he he'd mentioned a
"public display" and N'vanik couldn't help imaging something like a
whipping.
She reached over and put her hand on his to give it a gentle squeeze.
She knew some of N'vanik's history now and felt how easily this whole
discussion could go awry. N'vanik by nature was a fair man but his
anger when aroused was a terrible thing. She only hoped they and
Corowal could come to an agreement about how this particular issue
could be resolved. She turned as she heard voices.
"They're waiting for you in the council chamber father," said L'cor
though he didn't escort him into the room.
Cyradis did hear his footfalls coming toward them.
Corowal entered the room. "Weyrleader N'vanik, Weyrwoman Cyradis," he
gave them polite bow, keeping his voice neutral. He was in completely
different mood than last time they dealt with the aftermant of an
incident involving J'ackt. "I wish the subject of this meeting were
more pleasant. How is that young bronzerider?" He eyed the expression
on N'vanik's face and started to asses his changes. While Corowal
could be considered fit and he trained regularly with his guards, his
job, unlike dragonrider's, was mainly sitting behind the desk and
talking to people. Besides, it's been decades since he actually had to
fight for real. His estimate was that he would able to hold on his
own, for awhile.
Cyradis lifted her chin with eyes like shards of obsidian. "We came
close to losing all three of them," she said. "Luckily for your
holder, J'ackt chose not to kill him, even though he could have. He
apparently had the upper hand in the fight even unarmed. He was badly
wounded and losing consciousness when our people got to him and pulled
Grevan away. Thank the dawn sisters we didn't lose Zith. But it was a
close thing." Her anger wasn't at Corowal but at the situation that
had obviously festered between the Hold and the Weyr.
"As a Lord of the Emerald Falls, I offer my sincere apologies that
your dragonrider has come to harm as a result of actions of resident
of Emerald Falls Hold. I do hope him speedy recovery," Corowal spoke
with formal, official tone. He did mean what he said. This time the
situation was more clear cut. A dragonrider had been attacked,
unprovoked. Only wrong doer was that idiot Grevan.
N'vanik bit back a few responses, aware that snapping at Corowal was a
bad way to start this meeting. Finally N'vanik said, "We'll need to
have a trial." As much as he'd like to punish Grevan immediately, that
wouldn't go over well. Besides, making this public would turn Grevan
into an example of what happened when a holder attacked a dragonrider.
"Yes, a public one should stave off nasty talks about
Weyr-conspiracy," Corowal agreed. "Do you know if Grevan worked
alone?" he asked. He was certain neither of them had forgotten the
anti-Weyr protets and incidents after last time. Corowal's biggest
concern was it to resurface and that Grevan had supporters in his
Hold.
"He claims his family wasn't involved," N'vanik said. "Have you heard
anything? Any holders that might be making plans to hurt the Weyr?"
**Are you encouraging anything?**
"I wish I had heard about something. After the previous incident, we
kept an eye on that family. But time passed and nothing happened and
those men were needed elsewhere," Corowal replied. "Right now all
attention and manpower is directed to that bandit-trial."
Cyradis nodded. "Well, we're in a pickle now so let's decide how to
handle a cross-area incident. We don't want to step on your toes and
nor do I believe you wish the same for us." She looked to the Lord
Holder for a suggestion on how they could accomplish it and maintain
the relationship between Hold and Weyr.
"How about a grand trial, with Weyrleader, Hallmaster and Lord Holder
as a judge. That way no one can blame you for foul-play. I believe the
crime, attempted murder of dragonrider, is serious enough to warrant
it," Corowal suggested after a moment of thought. Such trials were
rare but so were attacks on dragonriders. "It was your rider who was
attacked, my Holder who is accused of the attack and Hallmaster who
would be impartial. All sides get represented."
Cyradis nodded and even half smiled. "I like the way you think," she
said. "We want everyone to understand that we're trying to be fair to
the accused. Would you speak to the Hallmaster or would you rather I
send him a note?"
N'vanik wasn't sure if Corowal might be sympathetic to his holder, or
if the Lord might see this as a way to prove his commitment to the
Weyr. Vestian, though... N'vanik was more sure he could count on the
Hallmaster.
"It happened here, on your territory, it would make sense you're the
ones to summon him," Corowal replied to Cyradis.
"Very well," she nodded. "I'm happy to do that." She even began
composing the letter in her head.
"Would it be possible for me to question this attacker?" Corowal requested.
"Of course," Cyradis nodded.
"We could take you now if you'd like," N'vanik said.
"Thank you, I appreaciate it," Corowal replied.
