Panitath lumbered down the ramp into the hatching caverns and it's
warming sands. She called her mate to come and guard her and her
lifemate to witness her labor.
Cyradis ran down from her office forgetting her conversation with the
dragonhealer for the moment in the joy of the clutching.
Loseth arrived and crooned to his mate as he took up position on one
of the lower ledges. Close, but not in the way of the Queen.
N'vanik came in several minutes later. "That useless bag of hide
wouldn't wait for me." He glared up at his bronze.
}:I must attend my mate when she calls.:{
She chuckled. "Mine never waits for me, but she has an excuse."
N'vanik went to sit with Cyradis, putting an arm around his Weyrwoman.
"At least we didn't miss anything."
She leaned into him for a moment. "Seems like we were just here
doesn't it? And there was that beautiful gold egg?"
"I don't suppose we'll have another one so soon." That would be quite
a feat, two gold eggs in a row.
She smiled, "Somehow I doubt it," she said. "But you never know. It
was a good flight."
Panitath had begun her ritual turning and turning and finally scooping
sand until she had everything exactly the way she wanted it and
settled. Moments later an egg appeared moist on the warm sands
followed by another a moment later.
Watching Panitath bring new life to the Weyr had become familiar but
it was no less awe inspiring. After some time had passed and there
were several more eggs, N'vanik chuckled to himself. "One of these
days I'm going to remember to order from the kitchens _before_ I get
to the Hatching Cavern."
"You and me both," she echoed his sentiment. "But unless I miss my
guess, about lunchtime Chasyea will send someone with a tray. I'm
pretty sure riders will tell her where we are."
Sure enough, about half a candlemark and two more eggs later someone
appeared at the door with a tray. "There," she smiled. "We're not
going to starve."
N'vanik hurried to the entrance to retrieve the food and drinks,
asking the drudge to send along their thanks to the Headwoman. "We've
been rescued." He set the tray on the bench between them and picked
out a cookie.
Cyradis chuckled as he went straight for the sweets. She picked up a
piece of cheese and a meatroll, she could feel the need for something
more substantial in her stomach. She took a bite and munched for a few
minutes before it seemed like she plopped out three eggs in a row.
"How many is that now?" She thought there was quite a good clutch
coming at this pace.
"Twenty eight." N'vanik dusted crumbs off his fingers and reached for
a meatroll.
}:You're doing well, my beautiful mate.:{ Loseth radiated pride as he
crouched protectively over his Queen and their soft, vulnerable eggs.
Panitath was concentrating on her job but her mate's encouragement
made her especially happy with him. There were reasons she'd always
chosen Loseth since she'd come to her new Weyr. }:Thank you:{ she said
as she squeezed out another egg.
"Shes' working hard this time," Cyradis said with a hint of concern.
"Should I call Y'gel?"
"We probably should have him check her out once she's done, just to
make sure everything's alright." Cyradis stood and brushed the crumbs
from her dress and began counting the eggs again. "Thirty-one. It's
shouldn't be long now. Do you mind calling Y'gel to be ready?"
N'vanik hardly had time to finish his thought. }:I have asked
Aughashyth to get his rider:{
"Loseth's on it." N'vanik couldn't help being a little nervous.
"Thanks," she said as she walked closer to Panitath. She saw a little
ichor on the latest egg and her heart constricted though she didn't
want to go closer while her lifemate was still laboring.
"You needed me?" Y'gel called from the entrance.
Panitath's reaction was one of denial but Cyradis said "Yes," in a firm voice.
}:He may come:{ Panitath finally acquiesced.
Y'gel brought a case with him that carried a few instruments just in
case. He bowed as he approached. "Is she done?"
N'vanik looked to Cyradis for confirmation. Faranth, he hoped this was
something minor.
"She is," Cyradis nodded. "Thirty-five, not a bad number. But she
seemed to strain over the last few."
Y'gel nodded and slowly moved toward the great queen ready to remove
himself if she refused him but she laid down between him and her eggs
in such a way that he could examine her. "A little Ichor," he said at
first and opened his bag. After smearing his hands and forearms with
redwart he probed bur found nothing that truly concerned him. "Looks
like a simple tear in the 'positor. It must have been a bit painful
for her." He painted the area with numbweed. "A couple of stitches
should take care of it," he said.
N'vanik breathed a sigh of relief and gave Cyradis's hand a squeeze.
}:You have worked hard for our eggs. I will bring you the fattest
herdbeast,:{ Loseth said.
Panitath's mental sigh was all about exhaustion and gratitude to her
chosen mate.
Cyradis didn't even realize she'd been holding her breath until
N'vanik sighed. She squeezed his hand in return then turned to put her
arms around his waist for a hard hug. "Thank you Y'gel," she called out
to the other bronzerider.
"Don't worry," he said.
"We've got thirty-five beautiful new eggs and Panitath is fine."
N'vanik smiled as he held Cyradis.
