Dorana spotted the young man, who looked about her age or a little
younger, standing in a corridor looking puzzled. She recognized the
look. She'd had the look, though that was turns ago.

"Hello," she smiled as she approached. "Need some help?"

Saran sighed in annoyance. He'd gotten searched a few days ago with
his sister Rossalin and he still had troubles finding his way. He had
lessons soon and didn't want to be late. But as it was, he was
completely and utterly lost.

He broke out of his thoughts when he heard a woman's voice asking if
he needed help. He blushed having been caught but smiled at her
anyways. "Yes Mam. Just arrived a few days ago so still getting used
to the place." He said sheepishly. "You wouldn't know the way back to
the candidate barracks, would you?" He asked moving closer but staying
a respectable distance away from her.

"Sure do," she replied with a smile. "If you'll follow me, I'll show
you the way. Where were you coming from?" She turned and headed back
down the corridor, assuming he was following.

Still blushing a bit. "I just came from the training grounds. One of
the other candidates suggested that I start running a bit to get into
better shape." Saran replied. "My name is Saran, by the way. What's
yours?" he asked walking up beside her.

"Dorana, pleased to meet you, Saran. And that was good advice,
especially if you aren't used to exercising," Dorana smiled. "Are you
Hold-bred or Hall?"

Saran had to think that one through a bit. On one hand he was born at
the hold, but he was trained early on in his father's craft. "To be
honest, I'm not sure what I'd be. I was born at Emerald Falls Hold,
but my father started training me early on in his craft." he said
grinning at her. "How about you?" he asked curious.

"Hold-bred as well, Emerald Falls, to be exact," she smiled a little
wistfully. "You were at the Hold proper?"

Saran nodded. "Yes, though I was more often then not working with the
runners...generally from the time I woke up until dinner time." he
replied. "When were you searched?" he asked as he got a closer look at
her. She seemed familiar like he'd seen her face around, but he wasn't
quite sure.

"About eight turns ago," she replied, amazed as always that it had
been so long. "I aged out of being a candidate two turns ago," she
added with a sigh. It still hurt that she hadn't Impressed.

"My father is a guard at the Hold."

"You sure don't look it." Saran said lightly flirting with her. He
eye'd her, but in a way to know he was only teasing her. When she
mentioned her father, he looked thoughtful. He knew a majority of them
from his wanderings around the Hold during his free time. "What's his
name? I know most of the guards...well if not them, their faces at
least."

Dorana stiffened a bit, not sure she wanted to hear anything about her
father and yet terribly curious to know if the candidate did know of
him. The two conflicting emotions warred for a moment before she said,
"His name is Randon. My mother's name is Domaria."

Saran hmmed as he thought. Domaria sounded familiar, but he wasn't
sure why. After a few moments he finally put faces to names. He was
about to answer when he saw her stiffen. He wondered what that was
about, but didn't really know Dorana well enough to ask that type of
question. "I know of them, but I don't personally know them." he told
her after a moment's thought.

She didn't know if she were more relived or disappointed, if she were
being honest with herself. But she smiled and nodded, "Well, I haven't
spoken to them in turns."

Saran was really curious about the story behind that, but he wasn't
sure how to ask her about it without sounding nosy or rude. Him, his
mother and little sister were quite close. That reminded him that he
needed to write a letter to his mother. "I'm sorry to hear that. I
don't know what I'd do if I wasn't able to speak to my family." he
said a bit awkwardly as he continued walking beside her.

Dorana gave him a small smile and shrugged, "It's been turns now and
we parted on bad terms."

Saran nodded and walked quietly for a few minutes. "So, what types of
things are there to do on our free days?" he asked curious. He'd not
really done much except getting himself acclimated to the Weyr and
working out a bit.

"You can do pretty much whatever you like, within reason, of course,
on Restdays. It depends on what you're interested in, I suppose."

Saran smiled at her. "I'm always up for trying new things. What do you
like doing on your free time?" he asked curious about her. She seemed
like a decent girl to get to know even if it was just as friends.

"Nothing too exciting. I like to embroider," this was a holdover from
her girlhood days back at the Hold. Girls, especially well-born ones,
were supposed to be good at needlework. Sometimes she created things
others were willing to barter for, which was also fun. "I also like
reading. When the weather is nice, I like to go tot he beach and
swim."

"What about you?"

Saran grinned. "I'm happy that you can do that. About all I can do is
mend a tear in my clothes and making sure my runners straps are in
good shape." he said when she mentioned she embroidered. "I love
swimming, but hadn't really had a chance to visit the beach. I'm sure
Hazelnut would love the water though." he said thoughtfully as he
wondered how she was doing.

"Hazelnut?"

"She's my runner. She's due to give birth to her first foal next
month." Saran explained. "Right now, my mother is feeding her. If I
don't impress in this clutch, I will be going back home. But
otherwise, mom will be caring for her." He smiled remembering his
runner fondly.

She smiled, "I used to go riding when I was a girl. Not often, but it
was always fun."

He smiled at her. "Did your family own some runners? Or were you just
using some of the hold owned runners?" he asked curious knowing the
hold owned some of their own runners for messengers or just casual
riding.

"We just used the Hold's runners," she replied with a small nostalgic
smile. Her family was not well-off enough to own their own beasts,
though her mother's family had a large stable, she had been told many
times It was one of the reasons that she and her siblings had been
taught to ride. In the hopes that it would please her mother's
parents. Still, she'd had her favorite of the runners and she'd
thought of him as hers in secret whenever she'd get to ride him, which
hadn't been nearly as often as she would have liked as a child.

Dorana noticed suddenly that they were nearing their destination, "The
barracks are just ahead."

"Ah so we are!" Saran said realizing they were at the barracks. He was
having fun talking to Dorana. "Hopefully we can meet next time we're
both free. I enjoyed talking to you." Saran said smiling as he bowed
playfully towards Dorana. "We shall meet again, M'lady." he said
winking at her as he headed to the barracks.
