She felt like she'd been criss-crossing the weyrbowl for days. Ernola
approached the barracks and sighed, realizing she should have stopped
to get something to drink. She was parched! But, it would have to wait
a bit as she noticed the young woman waiting for her. "Dorana?" she
asked with a smile.
Dorana returned the smile, "That's me. I take it you're our new candidate?"
"That I am. My name's Ernola," she said as she looked around at the
coming and going of candidates. "Oh my ... I'm suddenly feeling quite
old."
"Well, you are older than most when they arrive for the first time, I
won't lie. But you won't be the oldest candidate in the barracks."
There were a few who were within a turn of aging out, though most had
been in the Weyr for a few turns at least.
She found that very hard to believe but it didn't matter. She would
stand as long as she could and be grateful for the opportunity. "As
long as there are a few of us to fend off the rambunctiousness of the
youngsters, I'll be happy. So, what's next?"
"Well, if you want to follow me, we'll get you settled in." As they
walked, Dorana continued speaking, "Searches have picked up lately, as
I'm sure you can imagine, so we're filling up, but there are still
plenty of beds available to choose from." She gestured toward several
obviously empty beds among others that were made up and surrounded by
personal items, to demonstrate her point.
"You can pick any you like, but there are mostly candidates closer to
your age down on this end," she finished.
"I think that would probably be best. Although I've been around those
younger than me at the Harper Hall, having like-minded people nearby
would help keep the stress down," Ernola said with a grateful smile.
It was amusing to see some of the personal items around beds since she
was never one to have too many things. She never knew when she'd have
to pack up and head out on an assignment. Looking around, she pointed
to a likely spot near a bed that wasn't so cluttered. "I'll take that
one, if that's okay?"
"Certainly. The chest at the foot of the bed is for your things and
the desk beside it, to the left, is yours as well. If you'll follow
me, I'll show you where the bed linens are. You're an apprentice so
you won't have to worry about the chore roster, but I'll show you
where it is posted anyway." Dorana began leading the way to a storage
closet at the end of the corridor and a bulletin board nearby.
Ernola set her bag on the bed and turned to follow Dorana. She was
thrilled that she didn't have to worry about the chores. "Should I
check them each day, just in case? Or will we be told ahead of time if
we're needed?" she asked, aware that there may be times that crafters
are brought in for large scale chores.
"You can check on the board everyday if you want to, if nothing else
it will help you keep track of your fellow candidates. But generally
apprentices report to whatever Journeyman or Master they've been
assigned to during that time everyday. If there were some need to
bring in crafter candidates for some sort of big project, that would
be announced individually of the regularly scheduled chore
assignments," Dorana added, guessing where the question was headed.
"You're a Harper Apprentice though right? Have you met with the Weyr
harpers yet?"
"Not officially but I do check in with them whenever I come to visit.
Is there anything else you think I should know?"
"That's who you'll need to go to during the scheduled chore-time.
You'll spend that time working on your craft instead." She smiled and
added, "Unless you have any questions, that should cover it for now.
Feel free to find me if you need anything at all."
"No, I have no more questions. Thank you and have a lovely day,"
Ernola said before picking some linens and heading back to her bunk.
She chuckled to see Note already there checking every nook and cranny
of the area to find the best spot for her to rest.
