Kapera

Cyradis nodded to herself after the rest of the other leaders had said
their goodbyes. She walked slowly to her office and reached out to
Panitath as she did. **Dearest, can you have Riyanth's come to see
me?**

}:Riyanth, can yours come to see mine in her office?:{

}:Yes,:{ the other gold said. She had watched the parade of ranked
dragons in and out of Dolphin Cove with great curiosity. Originally
she'd been on her ledge, but then she wanted to see the foreign
bronzes closer, so she'd found a spot where she could sun herself,
displaying her ease at this Weyr, and watch them. The fact she'd
gotten a few Dolphin Cove bronzes to court at her certainly helped the
gold's mood.

Kapera showed up a few minutes later at Cyradis' door. She hadn't been
sure if she'd be needed for anything at the meeting, so she'd dressed
up a little fancier than normal, with a deep green tunic with
embroidery on the neck and her hair arranged in small braids gathered
together in a runner's tail. "How did Panitath feel about all of the
strange dragons? Riyanth was rather intrigued by them," she asked as
she breezed in.

"Don't you look nice?" Cyradis smiled as she came into the room. "She
had a wonderful time checking them all out. Of course, she still
thinks Loseth is the most handsome bronze in the Weyr at the moment."
She took a long moment and then she smiled again. "We talked about a
new Weyr and everyone is agreed it's needed."

"In case I was needed I wanted to be a presentable Second," she said.
"To cover River Bluff's old flight territory?"

"Yes," Cyradis answered. "And I've recommended you and Riyanth to be
one of the prospective golds to start residence there whenever we get
hatching sands ready. First to rise will be Weyrwoman.

It was a good thing she'd taken a seat in one of the office chair
before Cyradis said that. If she hadn't been sitting down, she might
have fallen to the floor. As it was, her hands clenched on the arm and
her face went a little pale as the words sank in and thoughts went
racing around her head.

"Me?" She asked, and her contralto cane out a little high and strangled.

Cyrdis chuckled. "Yes you," she said. "Don't you want to?"

Did she want to? If you'd asked her last month, at least in theory,
she'd have said yes. Hadn't she been telling D'hol that she had wanted
to prove herself worthy of being a Senior Weyrwoman again? That she
wanted to show she was ready for it? And she'd been taking on a
leadership role, trying to be a very valuable Second to Cyradis. She'd
coordinated with Cyradis on flight scheduling and adjustments when
they'd changed the territory after the fall of River Bluff. She'd
helped train Dessa. Surely these were provable that she was
advanceable.

She knew she was far more ready, now, than she'd been the last time,
at Dragonsfall, when Riyanth had risen first. But at the same time,
with the stigma of that behind her, of being too young, too
inexperienced...How would other candidates for the position treat her?
If they were older, smarter, had been seconds longer... Surely the
dragons would favor them. And how might they treat her then? Or if an
even younger gold rose first, well... There were so many ways it could
go wrong.

}: It will not go wrong. We are ready,:{ Riyanth said confidently. The
gold dragon had no concept that she lacked worth, or that she and her
rider would do poorly; she had the built-in arrogance and
the self-assurance of all golds.

"I've thought about eventually becoming a Senior again. But it didn't
seem likely to occur again for many Turns. I knew I'd need more
seasoning to be ready, again. And besides, you and Panitath are such
strong leaders," she said because she wasn't going to lie to Cyradis and
say that it had never crossed her mind. It just hadn't seemed
likely.

"I think you _are_ ready Kapera," Cyradis said simply.

"If you're willing to spare me to go when it opens...how can I say no
at the chance?" Her mind was still whirling at the idea.

"What did they say the timeline would be? I know they'd need to find a
location to start building at, first."

"Yes," Cyradis nodded. "That is the first step. They'll need to make
sure they have a good size hatching ground ready before they can bring
in the queens. Besides you've come a long way from the young woman who
had all those issues. Think of it as a different life and move
forward. I know you can."

Kapera swallowed and her hand twitched, aching to be holding something -
a drink, a hide, anything. "It sounds promising. An entirely new
Weyr...no history there."

To be its Weyrwoman. It's _first_.

Cyradis smiled. "It's a unique opportunity," she nodded. "Take care of
your people."

"Assuming they'll be mine if Riyanth rises first," she said. "They
won't send the golds over until after the construction is going
through. Who's going to lead it until then? Is any of that known yet?"

"We're thinking K'ran is the best choice initially. We are trying to
replace River Bluff and he was its last Weyrleader. While K'sedel
might have been a good choice as well, I believe he's enjoying his
time with the Weyrlings." Cyradis smiled at Kapera. "But of course,
the actual Weyrleader will be up to the first gold to rise. Are there
any particular mature riders you'd like to be there for Riyanth's
first rise? Someone you work well with who would make a good
Weyrleader?" Cyradis could think of several but didn't want to foist
anyone on Kapera if she was to succeed.

"K'ran is a good choice. He's very laid back and innovative, I think
he'll manage the project well. What would happen to Rapids' leadership
though, with him gone? We're not reassigning off all of Rapids
immediately, are we?" Kapera wondered, before shaking her head,
realizing it was a lot to think about.

"I imagine that issue's the Weyrleader's problem and it might not even
be decided yet." Not if Cyradis was just bringing this to her. N'vanik
was probably having other meetings right now about this.

"I don't want to deplete Dolphin Cove of too many of its
bronzeriders," she said as a hedge while thought about Cyradis'
question.

It would be a tricky balance to walk. If she was going to be one of
the founding goldriders, then the Weyr would be hers in some way even
if she wasn't the Senior, in the end. So she had a duty to ensure the
new Weyr had a solid core of them. But other goldriders would be
transferring in from other Weyrs with their own pet choices. And until
the transfer was formalized, Dolphin Cove was her current home; she
wouldn't take enough senior bronzes to put them at risk.

Kapera's heart had an immediate answer of J'nus to the question. She
knew Cyradis would pick that up in her answer, as her and J'nus'
entanglements were well known. She did think he'd be a good
Weyrleader, or Wingleader if some other gold rose and won. D'hol was
also someone she could work with - though would Cyradis see it as
Kapera trying to poach away someone she cared about? Since there'd
been the friction between them over her dalliance with the bronzerider
before...

"Riyanth favors Kopth and Yumath, and I work well with both riders,"
she began, getting those out the way first. "I've worked with K'ran at
Dragonsfall and U'mer from Windswept Islands. That's four riders,
which shouldn't cripple the Weyr to lose. All four have been
Wingleaders or seconds before, and could fill in those positions at
the new Weyr. And if any of them wanted to return after the first
flights, I'm sure you'd welcome them back."

"Of course," Cyradis nodded. She hadn't even winced when D'hol and
Yumath had been mentioned. She didn't have the right and knew it. But
beyond all that, she knew both J'nus and D'hol were well qualified to
be Weyrleader. "We'll discuss this with each of them and let you know
what they say." She gave Kapera a genuine smile. "You can do this
Kapera," she said. "I know it. You're ready."

"I'm sure I'll have more thoughts before I go over. I assume we'll add
planning for this to our regular meetings?"

"Of course," Cyradis nodded. "I'll help you in any way I can."
