Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

She waited for a few days while she came to terms with her feelings
and the thought of losing something so recently regained. How would
their daughter take the news that her father was leaving or that her
mother was sending him away? Neither were really true but logic did
not really play well with ten turn old girls.
**Please have Yumanth's join me in the council chamber.** She reached
out with positive emotions to her lifemate.
D'hol received the summons and for a moment, he was grateful for the
change in his rather dull daily routine of doing not much of anything
except healing. But, the mention of meeting in the council chamber
was a curious one. Official summons then, and not a personal one.
Since he was certain that he'd not done anything to incur the wrath of
either Weyrleader or Weyrwoman, and since Yumath relayed that there
was no anger in Panitath's tone, it was even more curious. He thought
as he walked, brain working over the possibilities. His mind, eager
for activity, lit on one very plausible possibility and chewed over
the likelihood, taking in the probabilities.
He entered the council room, looked at Cyradis's expression and the
probability of the one possibility increased. He sighed softly and sat
across from her, his eyes never leaving hers. His voice was very soft,
but surprisingly not accusing or angry. "When am I leaving?"
She snorted and waved at the chair next to her. "You've heard that
we're sending Kapera to the new Weyrhold for a chance at Weyrwoman
there?"
He rose and moved to sit beside Cyradis, leaning on one elbow as he
turned to look at her. "Of course. She's ready for it." He studied
her face. "And I've heard K'ran is going as well. And...considering my
past experience with new Weyrs, I suppose that I'm going too."
"I gave her the opportunity to choose who would go with her. She told
me Riyanth favors Yumath and obviously, she favors J'nus." She smiled
slightly. "So both of you will be going in addition to K'ran." She
took a deep breath and smiled bravely. "I can not deny you the
possibility of becoming Weyrleader."
He fell silent for a long moment. Each bronze was experienced and he
also knew that if Kapera preferred J'nus, the man had a far better
chance than he, despite Yumath's previous success. "Is that the only
reason?"
"I think that you and I have resolved our... misunderstandings," she
said almost sweetly. "I don't really want you to go, so yes, that is
the only reason."
He could almost feel a sharpness in that almost sweet tone. "I could
be Weyrleader here." He spoke softly. "With you." He then sighed. "But
then, we'd end up at each other's throats again, wouldn't we?" He
wasn't a stupid man, and his next words were gentle, though they
inwardly made him ache. "And now that we know how each other really
feels, it makes it even harder on both of us." He reached out to
lightly press a finger under her chin, his thumb stroking her jawline.
"I don't want to leave you, Cyradis. Not just when we've..." He
sighed, then rubbed his own face. "Shaffit. Does Kielya know yet?"
Unshed tears sparkled in the corners of her eyes as she raised them
back to his face. "You're not leaving me," she said softly. "We're
just better at arm's length where the daily grind doesn't interfere
with the good parts." His points were all things she'd thought
through. She'd even discussed it with Panitath and her comments had
been a bit pithy. "Panitath won't choose Yumath as long as he's
Riyanth's mate," she smiled and tilted her head. "And as Riyanth's
mate, he has an edge there if she's first to rise."
"Besides, we're only a few breaths away." She shook her head at his
last question. "No, I'd thought we should tell her together."
He cupped her cheek with a gentle hand. "You'll come to me, then? When
you can? And maybe Kielya can spend time there too?" He'd have to tell
Jeyme as well for Dheymin's sake. Luckily, Dheymin was far more used
to him being away than Kielya was. "Faranth, Cyradis...I just don't
want to lose you again. Not for anything. Even for being a
Weyrleader."
"We'll visit." She smiled into his eyes. "They say absence makes the
heart grow fonder. I think enough time has passed for us to prove that
saying. Don't you?"
He cleared his throat. "I wouldn't say our separation made us fonder,
Cyradis. I think it made misunderstandings and anger worse. But the
love lasted somehow. I hope we can do better this time." His thumb
stroked her cheek and he took pleasure in the soft skin. "Would you
come to me tonight? Just for a candlemark? I can't do much yet, but
I'd like to hold you for a while if you'll let me."
She thought quickly of her evening plans then nodded. "I can do that."
she smiled.
That finally brought a smile to the corners of his mouth. "When do
you want to tell Kielya? I can't leave until Urlene clears me to
/between/."
"Oh it's going to be several weeks before you have to think about
leaving," she said. "They have to make sure there are Sands ready to
receive a broody queen before we can actually send Kapera and Riyanth.
The accommodations for the riders may be a little sparse at first. But
if I know that master crafter, he'll have some grand plans for the
space."
He nodded. "Good. That'll give me more time to spend with Kielya and
Dheymin. Just let me know when you're ready to tell her and we can do
it together."
Cyradis nodded. She wasn't too concerned since Kielya was old enough
to understand her da was just a dragonride away and she had pleanty of
ways to get there whenever she wanted. "It's so pretty lately, maybe
another picnic would be a good thing. I hear Ma'din taught her to
fish."
"I'd really like that." He tilted his head and held up a hand. "As
long as there's no more firelizard egg hunts. That little blue of
hers is much too like her. I came into my weyr a few days ago and my
whole table was covered in forks." He frowned, scratching his head.
"I don't know why it chose forks, but I had to return them to a very
annoyed kitchen staff. "
"Kielya," Cyradis shook her head with a rueful smile. "She's been
trying to train him and has seemed to latch onto the idea of forks.
I'll have a chat with her... again."
