Kielya

This time she got to eat her lunch, at least, before the humming
started. But after so many turns she was prepared and her dress was
ready to step into. A few minutes later she was all buttoned up.
Knowing she'd be escorted by her Weyrleader the rest of the day, She
twisted her hair up on the back of her head into a tall arrangement
with a cascade of curls down her back.

"Momma," the Weyrleader is here," Kielya called from the entry room.

"Coming," she called and soon walked in to greet N'vanik with a smile.

"You look lovely, as always." N'vanik gave her a bow before offering
his arm. "Shall we?"

She smiled her assent and took his arm. "Thank you," she said warmly
and ran her hand down the side of his tunic. "You look handsome too."

"Thanks. Be careful or we might get distracted." His eyes sparkled.

"Yes," she grinned up at him. "That would make us late."

"Can't be late to our own Hatching. The guests might forgive us but
our dragons wouldn't." N'vanik chuckled and turned to lead her down to
the Hatching Grounds.

"That wouldn't be good. No," she smiled back up at him. "But we can
dance later."

Her smile, therefore, was quite genuine when they entered the Hatching
grounds and took their seats. Candidates began to file in and she
smiled and nodded at her daughter Naradis. Guests were still arriving
and suddenly the humming stopped for a moment and she heard the crack
of the first egg. Her eyes whipped to the sands to see a lovely little
green step out of her egg with a shake of her head and a stumble
sideways. Two girls started forward, one bumping the other out of her
way sending her to her knees. But the little green lowered her head
and butted the first girl right in the stomach knocking her on her
behind and walked over her to the other. "Is that Aviday," she asked.

}:Yes, and Kobeth didn't like that other girl hurting hers.:{

"Oh," Cyradis clutched at N'vanik's hand. "Not the best beginning."

N'vanik couldn't help thinking about the Dragonsfall Hatching. As long
as it didn't end like _that_, well... a few bruised and scratched
Candidates wasn't so bad. "Looks like everyone is fine." The
Weyrlingstaff was already checking on Kobeth and both the girls.

The crowd muttered in concern but they were soon distracted by other
eggs hatching. Two greens, a blue, and a brown stumbled their way
toward the white-clad Candidates. N'vanik scanned them for familiar
faces. He always had a few favorites, people he'd taken a liking to or
the children of friends, like Naradis. A green seemed to be heading
toward one of them -- that poor kid Relkeyi. N'vanik leaned forward,
silently cheering him on.

The little hatchling stopped right in front of him and they stared at
each other. N'vanik was at the perfect angle to catch one of her eyes
turn into a whirling rainbow as Impression was made. "Yes!" N'vanik
pumped a fist and clapped. Relkeyi went to his knees, his dragon's
eyes shifting to a faint yellow of worry as she nuzzled one of his
arms. "He's the one brought in after his brothers beat him," N'vanik
told Cyradis. "Oh, he deserves this so much." The Weyrleader was
grinning.

Cyradis squeezed his hand with a grin of her own then pointed across
the Sands to where a beautiful blue stumbled to a group of young men.
"Oh look at that," she smiled. "He's picked Tener or T'ner.
Lehystrath is beautiful." Panitath warbled her own approval of the
Impression.

Another blue came close to a female Candidate with short hair, his
oversized head wobbling as he gave her a curious glance. Then he moved
away to choose one of the younger boys. A green gave a cry of distress
as she stepped on the edge of her own wing. Just as a few Candidates
moved to help her, she righted herself and made her way toward that
same short-haired female Candidate. The green dragonet had no
hesitation in choosing her lifemate. }:Alabath.:{ Loseth supplied the
green's name. }:She knew who she wanted.:{

Cyradis turned when she heard her son's voice R'nar was yelling
something at one of the candidates. She turned back to the Sands in
time to see a little green step in front of one of the girls and plop
down in front of her with a howl of hunger. Again R'nar jumped up
and started hooting at the pair in obvious celebration. "Ranni," she
said speculatively "and Sukiith appears very demanding." She shook
her head.

N'vanik was about to say something but he was distracted by a green
Impressing to Ernola. He recognized her as Z'hren's older sister, who
had recently decided to Stand. As the pair turned from the Sands a
green firelizard appeared above them, eyes whirling happily.

With only a few eggs still on the Sands, most of the hubbub seemed to
die down as the weyrlingmasters escorted the newly formed pairs to
where they had food waiting for the ravenous hatchlings. Some of the
candidates attention seemed to wander and shoulders slump as some
realized they weren't going to Impress this time. One young man turned
his back to the last egg and started to walk away when a glorious
brown popped out of the shell. With a mewling cry the brown stumbled
after the retreating back then he fell and tumbled head over heels
crying. Several of the people in the stands shouted for the young man
to turn around.

"There it is," Cyradis rose to her feet and grinned as his expression
changed and he whirled to run to the little brown. "Calocanth!" He
yelled. "Oh no."

Weyrling workers rushed out and they all helped the new rider right
his lifemate. Cyradis locked her arms around N'vanik's waist in a hard
hug. Suddenly she realized she'd been holding her breath just in case
they lost one but they hadn't and relief flooded her.

"They're all fine." N'vanik wrapped an arm around her and kissed the
top of her head. Of course she'd been worried. He couldn't get it out
of his head either, that little green dying at Dragonsfall, crying out
for a lifemate that wasn't there. It had been common when the queens
started laying large clutches before the Pass, but it was rare to lose
a dragonet now.

She looked up at him with a happy smile at another successful
hatching. Then she turned and took his hand as they left the box to go
greet their newly Impressed pairs.
