Holding the summons in her hand, Urlene approached the Weyrwoman's
office with curiosity. She knew that there were no concerns with her
work, but perhaps she was wanting an update on J'ackt or D'hol, which
would make the most sense. She knocked on the door and waited.
She pretty much knew who was coming to visit her so she smiled and
called out. "Come in."
Urlene stepped in, closing the door behind her. "You asked to see me,
Weyrwoman?" She approached, hands clasped neatly at her front, her
eyes curious.
"Come on in Urlene," Cyradis smiled. "Please have a seat." She nodded
at the couch beside her. There was tea, klah, and some refreshments on
the table in front of her. "Would you like some tea?"
Mindful of proprieties, Urlene sat with a polite smile and a murmur of
thanks. Settling herself in the chair, she nodded. "Yes, thank you,
Weyrwoman. Would you like me to pour for both of us?"
"Please," Cyradis nodded. She rose from her seat and leaned over
toward her desk to pick up a hide. She settled back into her chair
with a smile for the younger woman. "You did some pretty impressive
work recently."
With the grace and decorum drilled into her since childhood, Urlene
rose and poured first for the Weyrwoman and then for herself. She
offered Cyradis her cup before taking own and returning to her seat.
"Thank you. I presume you are speaking of Wingleader D'hol. I'm very
glad to report that he's healing better than I expected."
"Yes, indeed," Cyradis nodded. "That is part of it. but you've been
doing some very good work here at the Weyr for Turns now." She nodded.
"And I've recently spoken with Pachem."
"Thank you. I do my best to do so." At the mention of Pacham, Urlene
thought she understood. She and the Weyrhealder's personalities simply
clashed and they tolerated each other at best in her opinion. "Ah, I
see. He has concerns?"
Cyradis was aware of Pachem's opinions of Master Urlene but she hid
her twinkle whiled she picked up her cup. "He does," she started. "But
they're about his family. He's elected to move from Dolphin Cove to be
closer to his children." Her smile revealed now she added. "Which
leaves me with an opening I need to fill."
Urlene went completely still as she took in the import of the
Weyrwoman's words. Pachem was leaving. Her eyes lifted to meet Cyradis
and her back straightened. "The Weyrhealer position." Her heart began
to pound as she gripped her cup tightly in her hands. It was her
ambition. Everything she'd worked for. She restrained her initial urge
to surge forward to offer herself to fill that very spot that she
desired so greatly. "And I am being considered?" Miraculously, she was
able to keep her voice even.
"You are," Cyradis nodded. "While Pachem was concerned with your
bedside manner, I can see how you've needed to be strong in a world of
men. If anyone can understand that, I can." she half smiled.
"I've had to be very focused." Urlene admitted. "Unfortunately, I
haven't always been taken seriously, Weyrwoman. What would you need to
be certain of me?"
"I understand," Cyradis nodded. "But much of my job is interaction
with other people of rank all the while trying to get them to see my
point of view without running roughshod over their feelings. It's
political and the result I need is cooperation. If I can get them to
cooperate all the while thinking well of me, then I win." She laced
her fingers together trying to find the right words. "To do this I
must understand them." She smiled. "It isn't easy but it will be
easier now that you have your Masters knots. There is a certain
respect that comes with them. Have you noticed this yet?"
Urlene considered the question and then nodded. "Yes, I would say that
I have." She had caught the mention of 'understanding' others clearly.
"I've approached Olwinna about assisting with teaching me more about
Mind Healing and how I can use it to help improve my interactions with
people. I did learn the basics, of course, but it was never my focus
before."
"Some of it can be little things like sitting down." She chuckled, "I
make them all sit because I'm short." This fact was obvious to
everyone and while it didn't matter to others it made her feel better
when people weren't towering over her. She'd thought about it and
figured the same must be true of people lying in bed. "If you were to
sit while talking to your patients, the'd likely feel more comfortable
with you. It's not a big thing but it can really help with patient
attitudes."
Listening to the suggestion, Urlene nodded. "I can see that and I'd
not thought about doing that before." She had to admit to herself that
she'd been so used to defending her position and her training that
she'd not considered how her patients felt at times. "It's something I
need to start doing. Can you recommend anything else that would help
you make a final decision?"
Cyradis' lips twitched. "Oh I've already made my decision Weyrhealer."
She extended her hand to the other woman.
A myriad of emotions surged through Urlene and her breath exploded
from her as her hands began to shake. Joy, pride, disbelief and shock
all flung through her at once. Everything she had wanted, everything
she had worked towards for turns had been reached. Rapidly blinking
back a sudden wetness in her eyes, she took the Weyrwoman's hand in
hers. "Thank you. I won't disappoint you."
"I know you won't Urlene," Cyradis said softly. Her eyes narrowed
slightly though her smile never wavered. Y'gel had recommended Urlene
and given her both his and his uncle's appraisals of her abilities.
Then he'd admitted he was not unbiased and the intimacy they'd shared.
Cyradis wouldn't dream of revealing her knowledge to anyone including
Urlene. Nor would she reveal that Y'gel had felt the need to assure
her of his honesty in the matter. She'd already decided Urlene was
likely her best choice and his opinion had simply been confirmation.
There had been no trading of favors or political arm twisting. Indeed,
that lack had been somewhat refreshing.
"We will have regular weekly meetings to go over any items, injuries,
or issues. I'd like more frequent reports on any serious cases of
course and the rest we can play by ear."
Urlene nodded. "Of course." She'd be busy, but it was a type of
busyness that she wanted. "Thank you...again. I'll do my absolute best
work."
"I'm sure you will." Cyradis nodded.
