Urlene

Urlene tapped on the Weyrleader's door with a light hand; in her years
at the Weyr, she'd not been in this area more than a couple of times,
and never actually in the office. But, for all the report could be
delivered on a hide, there were some aspects of it that she believed
would be better spoken and explained.

"Come in!" N'vanik called. He set his pen down and rubbed his eyes.

Urlene stepped into the office, eyes immediately going to the
Weyrleader. Her gaze assessed even as she approached. "You look tired.
I apologize for disturbing you, Weyrleader, but I have the report on
J'ackt's improvement that I needed to discuss."

If she was coming in person, it couldn't be good. "All right. What is it?"

"He's healing, but not as well as I'd hoped. He says he's been doing
the exercises that I've prescribed for him, and I've no doubt that he
is, as there has been improvement in his strength. But he's also
strained the healing muscles and there's been some minor tearing." She
flipped through the hides and sighed. "I'm going to clear him for duty
in the Queen's wing today and for /betweening/. I did my best, but
the damage to the shoulder tendons is likely permanent. His arm and
shoulder will never be as strong as they were."

"But you think he's still capable of fighting Thread?" N'vanik wasn't
thinking about having a fit rider, but about J'ackt's well-being. He
enjoyed fighting, as much as a sensible person could. "The straining
and tearing... you think he did that to himself?"

"Most likely, yes. He's admitted to some frustration in the past month
and has overworked the shoulder. At one point the stitches were torn
and had to be redone before I took them out entirely." Urlene lips
thinned at the memory. "I understand that he's a very... active young
man and wants to heal, but I don't know that he knows the meaning of
moderation, Weyrleader." Urlene paused to consider N'vanik's first
question. "He's capable, yes. I'd suggest at least one month in the
Queens wing, if not two. He'll need to continue the exercises for his
shoulder to increase strength and it may tire quickly at first,
especially catching heavy bags."

N'vanik growled to himself about J'ackt popping his stitches. J'ackt
was going to get a very unpleasant visit later. "So his arm will never
be a hundred percent, but he can work up to a full fighting Wing?"

Urlene nodded. "Yes. I believe so. I think that eventually it may be
up to seventy-five percent of what it was, but most likely no more
than that. And he'll need to expect that the cold of /between/ and
cold weather will cause him to ache. I don't want him pushing the
other arm either to cause too much strain. I'd suggest no firestone
tossing or catching for at least another month. He can use a
flamethrower in the Queens wing, can he not?"

"He'll have to learn how first." N'vanik considered having Dessa train
him. She was fresh out of her own training and it would be a good
experience for her, having to work with a prickly bronzerider. "And
it'll drive Zith up the wall."

Urlene's brow quirked upwards, but a smile played around her mouth.
"That's your area, Weyrleader. I know little about it, to be quite
honest. But having experienced J'ackt's personality while he was
healing, I'm sure you will have your hands full."

"I've had my hands full since he arrived," N'vanik grumbled.

The smile she gave was almost sympathetic, but carried a great deal of
wry humor. "Then I can be thankful that he is your handful and not my
own any longer."

"Lucky you." N'vanik shook his head. "If you give me his release, I
can take it over to Cyradis."

Urlene inclined her head and handed over the release. "There you go.
Let me know if there are any further issues with his shoulder or
side."

"I will." N'vanik looked down at the release, but he wasn't really
seeing it. Instead he saw J'ackt on a stretcher, covered in blood.
"Thank you for saving him. I know it's your job, but even with that
wherry brain messing it up, you did fine work. It's amazing he's even
recovered this much."

Urlene studied his face. "Thank you. He's young and active. Perhaps
he'll surprise all of us and heal completely. He seems resilient." Her
brow knit. "You care for him very much, don't you?"

He nodded. "He's special to me, and I almost lost him."

She nodded. "True. It was close." She'd never personally felt that
close to anyone. Privately, she wondered if it was worth it. "Well,
I'll keep you apprised of his healing, Weyrleader. Have a good
morning."

"Thank you, Urlene." First he'd talk to Cyradis about J'ackt coming
back to her Wing. Then he'd go deal with J'ackt.
