Pierka was still in the first blush of caring for her new son and had
another month before she returned to full-time duty. She'd just put
him down in his cradle. The very one T'nom had made for Kazom when he
was born. She was dozing on the couch next to the cradle when she
heard the knock at the door.
"Can I come in?" asked Oria. "I brought something for the baby." It wasn't
much, just a small, but prettily wrapped blanket that she was sure would
come in useful.
"Oria," Pierka smiled as she pushed herself up. "Sorry I must have
dozed off," she said in a soft voice.
"Don't get up, I know what it's like." Oria grinned. "Is he letting you even
think about sleep?"
"Seems like a few minutes here and there," she smiled back. "But I
wouldn't trade these first few sevendays for anything."
"I know, and if L'cor and I decided to have another, I'd be the same." Her
fellow greenrider handed over the parcel. "Here, it's not much, but I picked
it up last time I went to see Coria."
Pierka took the package with a smile and opened it up to reveal a
lovely baby blanket. "Oh Oria! It's so cute!
Thank you!"
"I thought you'd like it. I had a hard time choosing just one." Oria smiled
back. "Will it wake him if I take a peek?"
"Oh no," Pierka smiled. "He's a sound sleeper."
"Long may that last," Oria joked as she bent over the cradle. "I think he's
going to favour you."
"Do you," Pierka looked down at her son really saw more of Z'ku, but
maybe it was a good thing if he looked a bit like her. She shook her
head with a smile. "I bet it's too soon to tell anyway," she grinned.
"How's Coria doing. I bet she's getting big."
"Big indeed, maybe I notice it more only seeing her the way I do." Oria's
expression was slightly wistful. "But I don't regret it, she's growing up
with family, and should anything happen to either me or L'cor..."
"Yeah," Pierka reached out to her friend. "I know what you mean." She
couldn't imagine being unable to see her boys anytime she wanted to
but Oria and L'cor had made the choice to have their little girl
raised by her grandfather at Emerald Falls. "Any thoughts of another
one for you and L'cor?" Pierka smiled.
"Maybe one day." Oria said. "Hopefully soon, before she gets old enough to
realise that she didn't have a brother or sister all along. And I think
L'cor would really like a son."
Pierka smiled. "Men do seem to like son's. But I've also heard their
hearts are snared by daughters."
"Well Coria well and truly is her Daddy's girl," said Oria. "she adores him
and it's clearly mutual. But a son to follow in his footsteps, that would be
something."
Pierka chuckled. "I think Z'ku would be the same way if we'd had a
girl." Just then she heard the first peeps from her son. "Almost time
for feeding," she smiled at Oria.
"Do you want me to leave you to it? Or fetch you anything?" asked Oria.
"Oh no," Pierka smiled. "I don't have anything you don't have," she
chuckled and picked up the baby. Lifting her tunic she slipped him
under and made a funny face as he latched on.
"I bet he's tickling you," Oria said. "Just until he's got what he wants."
"Yes," she grunted and then chuckled. "And he needs a change but I'm
going to have to wait till he's done. I don't dare take it away from
him now or there will be screaming involved."
"Well if you're lucky, his father will be back by then, and he can deal with
that little duty."
"You know? Z'ku doesn't mind changing a diaper. It's one of his good
qualities," she implied that he had many good qualities with a wink
and a smile.
"Even the 'explosive' ones? or when they fight back?"
"Well Kazom may have given him a fight or two over the turns but this
one isn't there yet. Probably not the really explosive ones, there are
limits," she laughed. "Does L'cor help with those? Maybe it's just
that bronzeriders are just too good for that?"
"Well L'cor does, there's a point where even her foster mother at the hold
takes one look at the nappy and hands her over to one of us if we're there.
I told him that given I did the hard part of getting her here, he can do his
share." She grinned. "Although there are enough people at Emerald Falls to
take pity on him at times."
Pierka laughed at that one. They'd had their share of those too. But
she was still so hungry for family that she didn't see it as an
overwhelming chore. "They probably think we need the bad with the good
and they're teaching us something important about our children. Maybe
we should let them clean up after a weyrling for a few months??"
"I don't think any of them would complain after the worst nappy ever," said
Oria with a grin. "I mean if you think babies can create a mess, a new
hatchling can do far worse."
Pierka's eyes grew round with merriment and she couldn't help
picturing her Liddeth in a nappy.
}:I don't need that:{ Liddeth snapped at her. This sent Pierka off
into a gale of laughter.
Oria could imagine what had set Pierka off, and joined in the laughter. if
dragons could wear nappies it would be incredibly amusing.
