Gossip traveled fast about the new weyrhold being established. It lent
new life to the River Bluff refugees who had been living at Dolphin
Cove or Dragonsfall since the ruin of their Weyr. K'lvin had heard
several of his former wingriders say that they intended to transfer as
soon as the weyrhold was able to take in more dragonriders. It was
certainly something to consider, K'lvin supposed. He knew that for
some of the former River Bluff riders, Dolphin Cove had never become
"home" for them, and the weyrhold created the opportunity for them to
establish a new one.
There was one bit of gossip that particularly interested K'lvin, and
that was K'ran's part in the matter.
"Wingleader?" K'lvin knocked at the other bronzerider's office door,
but entered without waiting for approval.
"Come on in - " he started saying, but the door was opening. He was
worried it was going to be a wingrider with conflicts, but he was more
relieved to see K'lvin. "Take a seat, there's some klah here."
K'lvin bypassed the klah, took a seat, and looked his friend in the
eye. "What are these rumors that you are going to be the one leading
the way on this weyrhold project?"
"The 'leaders Conclave asked me to, as River Bluff's last Weyrleader,"
K'ran confirmed. "It's a big responsibility to start it off. I'll be
overseeing it until the queens arrive and the first one rises. To do
all of that setup work, work with the crafters and all..." he said.
Wryly, he added, "Given that I'm told each of the queen candidates
will get to choose a few favored bronzes to accompany them, _and_ that
other ambitious ones will surely transfer in, well... Who knows how
long it'll last?"
K'lvin mulled over the information. The thought that the remnants of
River Bluff were moving forward, working on a new home, drove home to
K'lvin that there would not be a return to the Weyr he had called
home. Even though he had never realistically expected to go back,
somehow moving forward was like the final nail in the coffin.
"Rogueth outflew favored bronzes before to win the Weyrleadership, he
can do it again." K'lvin said.
"We appreciate your confidence in us," he said. "Every Weyr will be
sending people. I've been given some latitude to choose the initial
staff. People with valuable crafts or administrative experience."
"That makes sense." K'lvin acknowledged.
"Are you interested in coming along?"
K'lvin immediately thought of Riveenata. "For what purpose?"
"The first wave of dragonriders are going to serve as workbeasts,
really. A number of Craft-trained riders will be going to help with
construction and needs-meeting. Helping with the administrative work
of records and of getting Weyr social structures in place.
Transportation services. We'll still be under Dragonsfall's flight
protection at first. You're a seasoned bronzerider who's led a Wing,
you'd be a valuable person to have on the organizing side of things."
The opportunity to work, to have purpose in his life again, was like
offering food to a starving man. K'lvin wanted to say yes immediately,
but the image of a certain blue-eyed greenrider stilled his tongue. "I
need to discuss it with Riveenata first, but if that conversation goes
well, you can count me in."
K'ran switched from work to personal mode very quickly. "Are you two
close enough then that that's a considering factor?"
"Yes," K'lvin said. "I won't leave Dolphin Cove if it jeopardizes my
relationship with her." He had been stupid once, it wasn't going to
happen again.
K'ran tapped his cup of klah as he considered. "She's a Healer? Ask if
she's willing to transfer to staff the new Weyrhold, either during
setup or when we go full-time with the wings."
For the first time a grin creased K'lvin's face. "I will." The
bronzerider inhaled deeply. "I can't believe we're about to start a
new adventure."
"To set up a new Weyr from scratch, it's intoxicating, isn't it? We
won't have done anything like this before. When I re-opened Ista, and
with other Northern Weyrs, we were filling in ones that had been built
before."
"That is certainly exciting," K'lvin agreed, although the thought
occurred to him that it would be a large disappointment for K'ran if
the former Weyrleader helped create this new Weyr only to lose the
Weyrleadership in the first gold flight. K'lvin hoped, for his
friend's sake, that Rogueth was able to capture the Queen that rose
first.
"Do you have any other questions? Want to come see the place?" he
added after a moment.
"I would love to see it," K'lvin answered.
"If you're not busy the next restday we can take a long time of it, or
we could go in an evening here when it will be daytime there." The
advantage of timezones.
"I'll clear my schedule," K'lvin tapped a finger to his chin, humor
lighting his eyes. "Oh wait.... I have a completely free schedule. You
just let me know what works for you and me and Xmrenth will report for
duty."
"Let's go in the evening in..." He reached across his desk to consult
a hide. "I can assign F'lin to handle leading the next evening to keep
giving him practice, then I can take you out to see the project
manager and look around. So how does in four days sound?"
"That works. I'm excited to see it. I would say that I'd bring us a
nice bottle of liquor to celebrate, but," K'lvin rolled his eyes,
"Urlene's orders say no alcohol for me." He tapped a finger over his
heart.
K'ran said, "I certainly won't tell you to go against a Healer's
orders, they know what they're doing. Anything she will let you
indulge in? A good meal?"
"That I can have," as long as he watched what he ate, he thought.
"Perhaps we can drop somewhere for that afterwards," he said. "I'm
glad you're intersted in working on this project with me."
"I wouldn't miss it," K'lvin said.
