At the end if her duty shift, Urlene slipped to the dragon healing
area, staying against the wall as she paced towards Y'gel's office.
With a troubled mind, she was thankful to find the door open and him
within. She rapped lightly on the door frame. "Y'gel, do you have a
few minutes before you wrap up for the evening?"
He looked up with a smile. "Sure," he said and rose from his desk.
There was still a bit of hidework but then there was always a bit of
hidework to do. "What's up?"
She stepped in, closing the door behind her, the wrinkle in her brow
remaining. "I think I might need your help. I'm sorry to trouble you
with the matter, but I trust you. You're discreet and I'd rather not
go to one of the journeymen that I'm training about the matter. I'm
afraid I might have some abdominal or female issues. If you wouldn't
care to do a preliminary exam, I could bring them to the dolphins to
look deeper if I have to." The symptoms concerned her; she knew full
well that some women bloated, grew masses and sickened; her own
grandmother had had such issues and had subsequently died of a wasting
illness that was unable to be treated. It was a frightening thought.
"Alright," he said taking her word for what she thought it might be.
She was quite capable of diagnosis yet every he'd ever known always
checked with another when diagnosing themselves. "Where would you like
to do this? In the infirmary?"
"I'd rather be private, if you don't mind. Would you care to come to
my quarters after you're done? I can bring anything you might need."
Her lips quirked up with a half-hearted smile. "I'd rather not have
someone curious decide to step in to assist while my legs are up in
the air."
"Of course," he nodded. "I'll wrap up here and be over in a bit. Just
make sure you have the regular exam tools." He shrugged and put his
hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry until we know there is anything to
worry about. Alright?"
"Easier said than done." Urlene laid her hand over his. "Thank you."
Standing up on her tiptoes, she lightly kissed him, then stepped back.
"I'll be ready for you." She squeezed his hand again, then left to
gather the necessary tools and supplies that he might need. No one
asked questions nor did they notice when she carried them to her
quarters. Knowing what was needed, she slipped out of her gown and
shrugged on her robe to wait.
He knocked at her door about twenty minutes later and he had a basket
and a bottle of wine with him. He knew her and when she worked she
forgot to eat so he'd stopped by the kitchens and picked up some fried
wherry and tubers. "Urlene?"
"Come in." At his entrance, Urlene looked up with a smile, her brows
quirking upwards at his offer of food and drink. She chuckled a soft,
"Thank you. You know me far too well. My mind's been elsewhere and I
didn't bother asking for a dinner plate." Her stomach rumbled at the
thought of food, but the moment she smelled the scent of oil and meat,
it clenched and her nose wrinkled. "I'm afraid though, that I've not
had much of an appetite lately. Perhaps in a bit, I'll eat a little."
She sat on the edge of her bed and gestured to the tools carefully
laid out on the table. "I'm ready when you are, Y'gel."
Y'gel's eyes narrowed slightly, but he nodded and placed the items on
her small table. Then he dragged the chair over and positioned the
light to see what he was doing. His hands were normally warm so there
was no need to worry there. He lifted the robe "Scoot down a little,"
he said and helped to shift her hips closer to him. "Ready," he asked
and placed one hand on her stomach.
Urlene laid back, scooting down where he guided her. Forcing her
nervousness to the back of her mind, she nodded. "Yes." She felt no
embarrassment in her position; Faranth knew that he'd seen her bare
and she certainly hadn't minded when he had. She was grateful for the
warm, familiar hand and taking a deep breath, held still.
He'd already washed his hands and so began the examination carefully
and as he palpated her abdomen and manipulated her organs to find each
of them where they should be and approximately the right shape and
size, Then he stopped for a moment. "Urlene? When did you first notice
this?"
"A sevenday or so ago." She sighed. "Little things, but when I started
to feel bloated and couldn't eat much, I started getting worried. My
mother's mother had female problems."
"And are your breasts sore," he asked with a crooked smile.
Urlene considered it. "A bit, yes. But I think I'm close to starting
my cycle. I've never been regular, so that's how I usually can tell
it's coming." She lifted her head and arched a brow. "Why?"
"Because I think you're probably about to start your second
Trimester," he said with a wink. "You're fine, Urlene," he added. "The
only thing going on with your uterus is the stretching due to the
growth of it's occupant."
