"When are you going to tell me what's bothering you," Briata asked
gently as Y'gel walked through the door. "Aughashyth seems a bit
distracted when I tried asking him."
"You know I don't like you doing that," Y'gel said equally gently. He
looked around the room and there were no children or sounds of them in
the other room. So she must have planned this.
"I know," she nodded with a quirk of a smile. "But you've been distracted too."
"Yes," he said. **And with good reason** he thought. "Come here," he
said and took her hand to lead her toward the couch. Pulling her down
beside him he put his arm around her and smiled as she leaned
naturally into his arms. "I love you beyond words Briata," he said.
She tilted her head and looked up at him, "Good, and I love you," she
said but with a puzzled look. "What's going on?"
"I need to tell you a story, and you need to tell me how it's going to
turn out," he said.
"Alright," she said carefully and with a bit of suspicion. "Am I going
to like this story," she asked.
"Truthfully," he tilted his head. "Probably not"
"Well then," she said, "You might as well get on with it."
"Right," he said. "It starts when Wingleader D'hol was so sick..."
~~~~~ a candlemark later~~~~~
"And that leads up to her most recent news. She came to me saying she
needed and exam and while she's a great healer she can't actually self
exam her female parts."
Briata was silent and sitting away from him with her arms crossed and
watching his face. But he knew he couldn't stop, not now.
'She thought something was wrong with her but instead I confirmed
she's close to the end of her first trimester. She's pregnant."
"Yours," Briata asked in a neutral voice.
"She doesn't know. It could be Lorican's. In fact, I think she's
hoping it's his and she can have a normal life with him when he
returns from his journeying. But they only had three days together,
and that's hardly enough to build a life on."
"True," she said mildly. "And you have a Weyrmate."
"Whom I love deeply," he said. "and she knows that." He nodded in
agreement. "You know, we have never really discussed outside
relationships but then I've never been drawn to anyone else since we
'mated. That's pretty odd for a dragonrider."
Briata smiled. "It is," she chuckled and came back over ducking under
his arm. "I should be mad at you," she mused. "But I'm not. Well, I am
but not because of Urlene. More because you didn't tell me sooner."
"I didn't know how to tell you and I didn't want to hurt you," he said
smoothing her hair.
"I know," she said. "But I knew something was going on and it worried
me. So I just waited and worried until you could get it out."
"So?" He kissed the top of her head.
"So... what?"
"How does the story turn out?" He asked.
"I don't know," she said. "I think it depends on Urlene, not me. Seems
like this is her story, not ours."
"Wow," he chuckled. "You are amazing love," he said quietly, stood and
picked her up carrying her into their sleeping room.
"I am, aren't I." she grinned into the dark. "I think you should remember that."
"I think you're right," he murmured.
