"Avi! Avi! Wait a moment!"
Aviday cringed. Her escape tactic hadn't worked, her mother catching
her before she could dart into the barracks. She had hoped that her
mother hadn't seen her, but it appeared that Daturna was not to be
ignored forever.
"I want you to meet someone!" Daturna arrived, slightly panting,
pulling a large barrel-chested man behind her who grinned widely.
Aviday groaned softly, "Mama..." She palmed her face and slowly turned
to greet her mother and this new man. Aviday's gaze flicked over his
knots and shot up. Not a bronzerider or a brownrider. A blue rider?
That was new. Usually her mother went for...**oh fardles.**
"This is J'rel. He's a blue rider and he just arrived from Vista
Point! I met him last night when G'yil's green went up."
**Of course she did.** Aviday gave a wan, but polite smile, and
couldn't help but take a little step back towards the barracks. Just a
tiny step. "It's nice to meet you, J'rel. I hope you like it here at
Dolphins Cove."
"I'm sure I will! It's great to meet you, Aviday. Your mother's told
me all about you." The man's booming voice fit the large frame.
A hairy frame. Grey hair. **I'll bet.** Aviday kept the smile pasted
on her face, but glanced over her shoulder at the alluring safety of
the barracks.
"I was telling him about how you just /betweened/, Aviday. " She bent
to whisper, but her whisper seemed to echo around the weyrbowl, "You
know... and your little problem?"
"Mama..." Aviday groaned and covered her face in embarrassment.
"It's nothing to be ashamed of..." J'rel began, but Daturna cut him
off, her voice cheerful.
"It _has_ to be taken care of. And J'rel's just the man to do it. And
trust me, he's..."
"I don't wanna know!" Aviday threw up her hands to stop her mother
from talking, face flaming. "Mama, I really don't want to know!"
"But he's got a hu..."
"No!" Aviday shook her head. "Look, uhm...thanks for thinking of me
but I _really_ can't talk about this right now. I've...uh...got a
class!"
Daturna frowned. "But it's nearly dinner time. Isn't it your free
period? There's enough time to..."
"Make-up work! K'sedel's really pushing us hard for Blooding, you
know. And Kobeth needs a bath and a good oiling."
"You did that yesterday." Daturna interjected.
"She got dirty! All that firestone that she's chewing. Oh, look!" She
pointed behind her mother. "There's N'vanik!"
The moment her mother's eyes widened and she turned to spot the object
of her affections, Aviday darted into the barracks. "Sorry, Mama! I
gotta go! Love you! See you later!"
"Aviday! What about..." The door closed hard behind her and Aviday
leaned against it with a relieved sigh. She hoped, really really
hoped, that her mother would give up. And if she didn't, that the new
weyr she was supposed to be getting only had dragon access.
