N'vanik

N'vanik

N'vanik had weighed the options carefully, and one person stood out
among the rest. He'd asked M'gan to meet him in his office and the
Weyrleader sat finishing up some hidework in the minutes before their
appointment.

When his dragon told him the Weyrleader wanted to see him, M'gan
couldn't help feeling curious. Since his transfer to Dolphin Cove he'd
focused on settling in to his wing and learning the territory, so he'd
not spend much time with the senior bronzeriders besides his Wingleader.
However, he did remember N'vanik from his time at Vista Point back
before he'd gone North, and...he'd certainly not expected that young
bronzerider to end up leading a Weyr.

**Still, that must have been twenty Turns ago, before the Pass. I expect
he's changed a great deal since then,** he told Isarth, resting a hand
on the bronze's sun-warmed hide. **And shells, I was hardly a model of
good behaviour myself, at that age.**

}:Surely not,:{ Isarth replied, his voice warm and amused. }:I will tell
Loseth that you are on your way.:{

M'gan smiled to himself and headed out of the weyr towards the
Weyrleader's office. When he arrived, he knocked and, replacing the
smile with a suitably respectful expression, entered the room.
"Weyrleader. You asked to see me?"

"Thanks for coming, M'gan. Have a seat." N'vanik had only met with
M'gan briefly when he transferred to Dolphin Cove and the older man
had been carefully professional, so the Weyrleader still didn't know
what M'gan thought of him. When they'd crossed paths before N'vanik
had been a young troublemaker and M'gan a Wingsecond. Even after Turns
of capably leading Dolphin Cove, N'vanik wouldn't be surprised if
people still doubted him due to his long, long history of being a huge
arsehole.

M'gan drew up a chair and sat, wondering what this was about. He was
well aware that the departure of several bronze and brownriders for the
new Weyrhold had opened up leadership roles in the wings, and never
having been one to pretend modesty, he couldn't help but feel a keen
sense of anticipation. On the other hand, he'd not been here very long,
and perhaps N'vanik just wanted to know how he was settling in. That
would be a sign that he'd grown into a good Weyrleader who cared about
his riders...even, he thought with inward amusement, if it would be
disappointing for him personally. "How can I help, Weyrleader?"

N'vanik liked to get to the point. With a hint of a smile, he said, "I
was hoping you might agree to take over Cyclone."

Cyclone Wing? That was far more than he'd hoped for, so soon. M'gan's
eyes widened in surprise and delight. At the same time, he sensed
Isarth's pride as the bronze understood what they were being offered,
which felt better than anything.

"Well - I'm honoured. Thank you." He took a moment, collecting his
thoughts. "That's a hard act to follow." He'd not met the former
Wingleader, but did know he was now Weyrleader at Barrier Lake.

"Is that a yes?" N'vanik asked with a raised eyebrow. "You can take
some time to think it over, if you want."

"No need." After his initial surprise, M'gan didn't see any sense in
hesitating. Isarth was as keen as he was, and he'd no-one else to
consult. He was well aware that it wouldn't be easy to take on
leadership of an unfamiliar Wing, as a relatively recent transfer to
Dolphin Cove. But he was a bronzerider, and such challenges were part of
life. Besides, he didn't want the Weyrleader to change his mind! He
smiled, with real warmth. "I'd be very happy to accept."

N'vanik took the knots from a drawer and handed them to M'gan. "Then
congratulations, Wingleader." Hopefully they would get along better
than he and D'hol had. Although, N'vanik thought with a mental
chuckle, that wouldn't take much.

"Thank you." He accepted the knots with an unexpected sense of relief,
thinking that he hadn't realized until now how much losing his Wing had
hurt. It had been hard, leaving behind the riders he'd flown with for so
many Turns, that he'd come to feel responsible for. He wondered what
Cyclone's wingriders would be like. "I suppose the Wingsecond has
been leading, until now?"

"Yes. K'deren is extremely capable, and I hope you'll keep him on."
N'vanik was sure the brownrider would be relieved to return to his
normal duties. "And don't hesitate to lean on him as you familiarize
yourself with the Wing."

"I'll go and speak to him, as soon as he's free." He'd not met K'deren,
but knew he had a good reputation. Keeping him in his post sounded like
a very sensible idea. "Well, thank you, once again, for the
opportunity." M'gan didn't know how much N'vanik had heard about his
reasons for leaving High Reaches, but it meant a great deal to him. He
smiled. "If you come by the dining cavern later, the drinks will be on me."

N'vanik chuckled. "What about the Vintner Hall tavern sometime?" It
would be good chance to get to know M'gan on a more personal level.

"Why not? I've not been there yet." The Hall had been rebuilt since he'd
last been in the South, and he'd been meaning to pay them a visit. "Now
I've got something to celebrate."
