Aviday

Aviday watched L'fic as he moved about the weyrbowl, but this time,
she knew better than to approach, still feeling the sting of his
rejection of her keenly. She sighed, running her hand through her
hair. Maybe if she let it grow out... but no, some of the boys had
long hair too. It wouldn't be enough.

She sat down under her tree and studied her feet. She'd watched him,
trying to see what kind of women he liked and had been greatly
dismayed. He liked women like her mother. Full, curvy, blatantly
womanly. No wonder he'd had no interest in her at all. She looked up
again, tugging idly at her toes. Maybe if she stuffed her breast band?
Would that work?

"Hey greenrider," L'cor called out to the dejected figure watching the
bowl. "Wanna give me a hand?" He'd seen what that wherry's ass L'fic
had done and said and he'd ripped him a new orifice when they'd
gotten out of sight of the girl. He'd even made the brownrider ride
sweeps for a week but that hadn't helped the hungry look on her face
every-time she looked at the guy. He figured he knew she had a crush
and what she'd wanted from the cruel brownrider. He'd had no business
treating any weryling that way. Hopefully he'd learn the error of his
ways.

Aviday looked up at the call, jolted from her thoughts. As a weyrling,
she was expected to offer aid to any rider who asked, so without
thought, she rose. With a quick last look over her shoulder, she
hurried over to L'cor. "Sure, bronzerider. I'll help." She gave a
quick smile. "What did you need?"

"Come help me scrub Tonuth?" He jerked his head toward the big bronze
standing half in the water. "Think you can climb up and get his
neck?"

"Sure, I'll help." Aviday rolled up her trousers to her knees, wading
into the water without hesitation. Picking up a brush, she turned to
face the big bronze; he was so much larger than her Kobeth, that she
was suddenly very glad she'd never Impressed a Gold. Too much
scrubbing! "Hello Tonuth. Can you please crouch down a little bit so
I can climb up?"

The big bronze snuffled her ribs and dipped down lifting a leg to help
her mount. Then he gave a little croon.

"Well aren't you being friendly," L'cor laughed at Tonuth. "I think he
likes you," he smiled at Aviday.

Aviday climbed up, began scrubbing the area where the bronze's
shoulder met his neck, then looked down at L'cor as she gave Tonuth an
affectionate pat; there was finally a brighter smile on her face, her
confidence rekindling just a bit at the bronze's affection. "What's
not to like?" Her teeth flashed in a grin. "I'm awesome. Just ask my
Kobeth. She'll tell you all about it."

Tonuth's eyes whirled happiness and he turned to blow and croon a low
approval at the young greenrider.

"No you may not" L'cor laughed up at the big bronze and scrubbed his
flank a bit harder. "You big loon," he shook his head and twinkled up
at Aviday. "He want's to keep you."

A blush stained Aviday's cheeks and she squirmed a little with
pleasure. "Thank you, Tonuth, but Kobeth probably wants to keep me."

}: Yes. :{ The green piped up, peering over at Tonuth. }: But you can
borrow her from time to time....if you like. :{ The young green
crooned at the big bronze, arching her neck coyly.

}:Thank you,:{ Tonuth replied with a bit of a dragon grin at the
green. He turned slightly to see her better. }:You are a lovely shade
of green Kobeth,:{ he added.

L'cor's brows twitched and he looked over at the little green flirting
with the bronze. "Um, How old is Kobeth now," he asked Aviday.

Aviday looked over at Kobeth. "She's about six months old now. She's
full sized just about."

"Yes," he said **and likely to rise soon. No wonder the girl is
looking after L'fic that way.** But he smiled, "Tonuth seems to think
she's rather lovely. How are your classes coming along?" He didn't
want to press her but he was just as aware of her need to get things
out of the way before her first flight and that made him doubly
irritated with the brownrider.

Aviday continued to scrub along Tonuth's side, a more cheerful
expression on her face. She did like the attention she was receiving
from him, an older bronzerider who wasn't treating her like a nuisance
or a little kid. It felt _good_. "I think she's the most beautiful
green in the weyr." She shrugged at his question. "They're good.
But..." her voice trailed off and she scrubbed a little more firmly.
"I'm not going to get to graduate like the rest of my class."

L'cor nodded. "There was a girl who was searched at the same time I
was. I was an understeward already by that time but she had to stay
with the Weyrlingmasters as well until she aged up enough. Then she
joined the wings. How long will you have to stay with them?"

"Until I'm 16, so over a turn. I think it's stupid if we can actually
do what we're suppose to do." She stopped scrubbing with a sigh.
"Kobeth is going to be mature, so I don't see what they can't treat me
like I'm mature enough to fly Thread in the wings." It had been a
constant irritation in her thoughts since she'd learned she couldn't
graduate to the wings like she wanted to. She turned to him. "How old
were you when you were Searched? You were already doing adult stuff
like training and duties and stuff, right?"

"Yup, pretty much," he smiled. "I was already an adult and working
toward becoming Steward at the Hold."

She turned to study him. "Was your Da' upset that you got Searched? I
mean, he's a Lord Holder and all. Didn't he want you to stay?" She
then grinned. "I bet my mama is all _over_ you during mating flights.
She's a moth."

"Oh no," L'cor smiled at her. "I think it pleased him very much," he
nodded to her. He didn't need to go into all the complexities of
Holders, Heirs and bastard sons. "I know he was proud of me because he
was in the stands cheering when this big goof found me."

Aviday smiled and slowly climbed down with a pat to the bronze's side.
"My Da was here when I Impressed too, but he and I didn't know he was
my Da until later. He's brownrider D'ale from Dragonsfall and he's
really nice." She tilted her head and then sighed. "I wish all
brownriders were as nice as he and my brother."

L'cor nodded, "I can understand that. I've heard good things about
D'ale," he looked at her another moment when something clicked. "So
your brother is K'ale, the one who's weyrmated to the goldrider." He
just didn't get how L'fic was thinking. But then he probably had no
idea and had simply been in a bad mood. That had been his primary
attitude since he'd joined the wing so it wasn't all that surprising.
"But that L'fic isn't worth your time Aviday."

Aviday's cheeks immediately flamed a bright red as her jaw dropped
open in surprise. Had she been that obvious? Faranth, no wonder L'fic
had refused her. Embarrassed, she sputtered for a moment, shifting
from foot to foot before looking away. She sucked her lower lip into
her mouth, chewing ferociously, then shrugged. "I guess."

"Look," he gave her a direct and serious look. "All dragonriders go
through exactly the same thing. This isn't an unusual time for you.
L'fic should have known instead of being a jerk about it. But, if
you'd like a nice positive experience then either your weyrlingmasters
or I can make some suggestions. It really should be nice and special
for you." He smiled slowly. "Just know that all weyrlings take this
step and you're not alone. There is no need to be embarrassed."

Her voice was quiet. "You know about what L'fic said?" How utterly
embarrassing...and humiliating. Had he witnessed it? Who else had
witnessed it? She wanted to shrivel up right on the spot. Face now
completely red with the blush extending to the tips of her ears,
Aviday stepped back. "Yeah. I know. I'll handle it. Uhm..." She
glanced over her shoulder, wishing that Kobeth was done playing in the
water. "Look, I gotta go. I'll talk to you later."

And he felt like a fool for pushing her too hard. "I'm sorry," he
said as she ran away.
