Ranni

Ranni

"How is it possible that you are a month old already?" Ranni murmured to Eranar, tickling her long nimble fingers over his naked belly. The month old baby boy was currently enjoying testing out his arms and legs by kicking and flailing them around.

Looking around her small weyr, Ranni's eyes took in the stacks of folded cloth diapers, baby blankets, burp cloths, and then a few of R'nar's shirts hanging out of the dresser that they shared. It was cluttered to say the least. The size of her weyr was not meant for a family and it was beginning to show.

"I had better clean up or your daddy will think all I do is sit and stare at you all day," she cooed at the baby. Ranni placed the baby down in his basinet, tucking a rag-sewn dragon in beside him before turning to face the cluttered weyr.

When R'nar showed up a candlemark later, the weyr was neat and tidy, but there were still things packed and placed in all different areas of the weyr. Being the guy that he was, R'nar didn't even notice it, he had eyes only for Ranni and Eranar.

"How was our guy today?" he asked, dropping a peck of his lips to Ranni's head as he passed her to scoop Eranar out of his bassinet.

"Perfect, as usual," Ranni said in the tone of a new mother.

R'nar swayed around the room with his son tucked into his arm, his normally stoic face animated in a large grin as he made faces at the baby, illiciting him the occassional smile in return.

"You know, I've been thinking," Ranni said, watching him.

"Oh?" he asked, not looking up.

"What if we moved into your weyr?"

That got his attention. "My weyr? Why?"

"Well, I think we're out growing the space here," she said, lifting her hands to gesture around.

"Well, it's only temporary," R'nar reasoned. "In another fortnight Eranar will be going to a foster mother and you'll be going back to finish your Weyrling training."

"Oh," Ranni said, unable to keep the crestfallen look from her face. "I had forgot about that." She wasn't sure what she was most upset about, the thought of not having Eranar with her all the time, going back to Weyrlinghood when her counterparts had all moved on ahead of her, or the fact that R'nar did not seem to be picking up on the hints she was dropping.

Catching the tone of her voice, glanced up at her again. "It's going to be hard to give him to the creche?"

"Yes," she said with a tremor in her voice. "And... what happens when he goes to the creche? Are you going to go back to sleeping in your weyr?" That's why he had started staying in the first place, wasn't it? So they could be a 'family'? It would be hard to be a family when Eranar was with a foster mother.

R'nar deposited his son back into his bassinet before turning his brown gaze on Ranni. "Do you want me to go back to my weyr?" he asked. He thought they had developed a rather comfortable family routine, but he had anticipated that once the baby wasn't around, Ranni might start feeling more independent again.

"Um... yes-"

The bronzerider's eyebrows lifted.

"I was thinking," she continued on faster, "that we would both go to your weyr. We don't really have a lot of space here."

R'nar's eyes narrowed as he approached Ranni. "Are you asking...." his face suddenly broke into a grin, "to be my weyrmate?"

Ranni rolled her eyes, but the tops of her high cheekbones flushed a bit. "Oh, shut up," she mumbled, jabbing a finger into his ribs.

"That's it! You do! You want to be my weyrmate!" R'nar teased, trying to shield himself from Ranni's sharp little jabs.

"Well, I mean, if you don't want to," she said, crossing her arms over her chest and lifting her chin.

The bronzerider laughed at he quick turn around. "Ranni," he said as he curled his hands over her hips, "of course I want to, and you're right, there is more space."

Her body melted into his touch, which annoyed her slightly, since it seemed to have a mind of its own lately. The healers had not cleared her for sex yet, but her libido didn't care. "I wasn't sure if you'd want to, since Eranar won't be around," she admitted.

"I told you I wanted to work on our family. I meant it. We are family, even when our son isn't around." R'nar had never had a family that was all his own, having grown up with his father's new familiy and then Cyradis's new family with K'deren. Having Ranni and Eranar in his life made him feel... complete.
