Cyradis

Cyradis

The young woman, Wirame, slowly approached the Weyrwoman's office,
still in a happy daze after speaking to the Healers and The Headwoman.
With child. She was with child! She didn't care that they'd sent her
to the Weyrwoman and though she didn't understand why it was
important, she was so happy about what she'd been told, that it didn't
matter. Her hand fluttered to her belly; it had never been quite flat,
but soon, it would be rounded and full.

With _his_ child. She'd watched him ever since she'd arrived from the
destruction of Riverbluff. So light and handsome he was when he was
out in the practice yard, tanned skin, lean and muscled. He'd never
looked at her before she'd gathered her courage and decided to take a
chance. And she'd caught him as he stumbled out of the flight. She'd
caught him and it had been wonderful. He hadn't stayed, but for that
brief time, he'd been all hers. It had been perfect. She knocked on
the door to the Weyrwoman's office, face still dreamy.

"Come," Cyradis called. She'd already heard from the healers who were
tracking all the women she'd marked as possibilities. So, she smiled
as the young woman came through the door. "Good afternoon Wirame."

"Hello, Weyrwoman. It's a wonderful afternoon." The glowing happiness
on Wirame's plain, round face made her, for a moment, look lovely.
"The Headwoman said you might wish to see me?" Her hand still remained
over her belly. "I suppose that the Headwoman told you my good news. I
promise though that I'll still work as long as I'm able. There's never
been a complaint about how clean I keep things. I'll be sure there
still isn't."

"I haven't heard any complaints about your work." Cyradis assured her.
"But I have heard that you just got some news and it looks like you're
very happy about it. Am I right?"

"Oh yes, the best news." She looked down at her stomach, where her
hand lay. "I'm with child, Weyrwoman. And I want it very much." Wirame
looked up at her, a wide, happy smile wreathing her face. "I'll be a
good mother to the baby. And it has a wonderful father; he's so strong
and handsome. Maybe the baby will grow up and be a rider too. If it's
a boy, maybe even a bronzerider, just like him."

"And you're very sure who the father is then?" Cyradis half smiled.
She poised her pen over the hide in front of her.

Wirame nodded. "Oh yes. I'm certain. It's Bronzerider J'ackt. I wasn't
with a man for several months before I decided to try to moth a
flight. I've never mothed before but I thought, if I took a chance, I
might be with him. And I was and it was the most wonderful thing. And
now this..." She laughed softly and rubbed her belly. "I couldn't be
happier. I know he's weyrmated, but it's the Weyr and at least he'll
know that his child has a good mother who will be there and take care
of the baby. Maybe even more children, if he wants. I wouldn't mind."

"Ah well then," Cyradis nodded. This was one of the ones she was
afraid might cause complications. "In this case, I must inform you
that bronzerider J'ackt has made his wishes known about any flight or
moth babies. He does not want to know about them... ever. Therefore, I
must ask you not to contact him or his weyrmate with any kind of
information about your child. Do you understand?"

Wirame's face visibly fell at the pronouncement and her hand over her
belly went still. "No, I don't. It's a baby. His baby. I
thought... well, most riders are happy about their children, any
children." Her obvious confusion and distress showed clearly on her
face. She'd seen them, checking in on the mother's, visiting and
playing with the children on occasion, even if they were weyrmated.
"I thought that he'd..." She looked down at her hand, her vision
blurring as her previous joy dimmed. "Why wouldn't a man want to know
his babies?"

"I know," Cyradis said sympathetically. "And if it were most riders
you would be right. But this is J'ackt. He's different and I can
assure you that he won't. In fact he is actively trying _not_ to have
any children. So, I hope that you can see that I am _very _ happy
you've conceived. You're doing a great service to the Weyr. But you
cannot reach out to Bronzerider J'ackt with that information It could
be detrimental to the Weyr.. However, the Headwoman will be finding
you a nicer room fit for you and your child. If you need anything at
all, you can either contact her or me. Understood?"

A single tear leaked down Wirame's cheek as she slowly nodded. "I
understand." Who would be a papa to her child? She didn't have a man
of her own. She wiped at her eyes quickly as her shoulders slumped.
"Well even if he doesn't want my baby, I want it." She gave a quick
little breath and cupped her abdomen in her hand again. "Thank you,
Weyrwoman. I promise I'll be the best mother I can. And thank you for
the room for us."

Cyradis smiled. "I know you do dear," she nodded. "And once your babe
begins to toddle there will be a da who will help you. Alright?" There
were plenty of young men in the lower caverns who would be happy to
lend their time to the children.

Had her concerns been that obvious? Wirame looked up at the Weyrwoman,
then nodded. "Okay. Are you sure he'll never..." She looked back down
and sighed, then shook her head. She'd had hopes and now they seemed
so silly. But the baby would come and Wirame resolved to love it
enough for both of them. She wouldn't be alone and she'd have help.
The baby would be loved, no matter how much of an utter ass the sire
was. "Thank you." She lifted her chin. "I won't say anything."

"Thank you Wirame," she nodded. "And if you would like to foster any
other children we would set you up with an appropriate room and
support for that as well. You have a good head on your shoulders and I
appreciate that." She smiled at the young woman. "Please make sure
someone lets me know when you deliver. I'd love to come and see the
babe and visit with you again."

Wirame bowed her head in pleased embarrassment. The compliment wasn't
expected and she couldn't say she wasn't proud of what the Weyrwoman
said. "Maybe after the baby's born I will, Weyrwoman. But this is my
first, so I think I'd like to get used to that before I take on
anymore. But I'll definitely consider doing just that. I'm glad you
highly of me, thank you so much. I'll be sure to let you know when I
give birth."
