After J'ackt had left the council chamber, Cyradis sat with her elbows
on the table and head in her hands. Fingers massaged her temples. Too
many thoughts swirled around in her mind to be able to contain them
all so she did as she normally did and made a list so she could start
her thoughts back up.
"First priority," she started. "Volcano is going to need a
Wingleader," she said looking up at N'vanik. "With Kapera gone and
Dessa too young we need a leader who can take the wing and manage
it." She reached for the klah and then smiled briefly. "Sorry for the
bad timing but sometimes these things can't be helped."
"It's fine." N'vanik sat down across from her. His mind was reeling
with everything, but Weyr business still needed to be handled. "Do you
have someone in mind or do you need help looking?"
"Well, I think I know who has the most knowledge that I'd trust to
take over and that's K'sedel. Who can argue with an experienced
Weyrleader. But would he want to do it?"
N'vanik nodded. "We can ask. He's certainly an excellent choice, and
Sh'del can handle things." He looked at Cyradis. "You're grounded as
of now?"
"Yes," she nodded. "I can't chance going /between/ at all for the
foreseeable future. Not if I want to keep the baby." She shook her
head. "Master Urlene was quite firm on that score." She smiled at him
across the table and reached for his hand. "I really do think this one
is yours," she said. "The timing is just too... perfect."
He squeezed her hand and smiled, pushing other worries aside for just
a moment. "Hadn't really thought about it before, but I like the idea
of having a kid with you." She was a strong woman, a good mother, and
he'd come to have a deep affection for his Weyrwoman.
She smiled warmly and nodded in agreement. "Me too," she said softly.
Then she took a deep breath. "But we also need to think about a
second. We have a few younger riders that are ready to step up. Don't
you think?"
"We do. I can get you a list of bronze and brownriders with enough age
and experience and you can start interviewing them to see if they
might be the right fit." Which reminded him he needed to do something
about Rapids... but right now Queens was more important.
"Yes," she nodded. "But I'd also like to get K'sedel's input on it
since he'll have to train whoever we select. "There are several I can
think of. Ones that we've discussed in the past who are showing some
real promise. Z'ku, I'lan are both ready," she nodded and her eyes
twinkled. "L'cor will be soon, and so will J'ackt. Maybe we should
have Kes take a close look at all of them?"
"L'cor and J'ackt need a few turns yet before they're ready to be
'Seconds. And even then good luck getting J'ackt to accept." N'vanik
snorted.
"Yes," she agreed with her own chuckle. "But they are getting close
and some training in Queen's wing would be great while our Junior
Queen is still too young to try and manage them. What do you think?"
N'vanik tilted his head. "On a temporary basis?" he asked thoughtfully.
"That's what I was thinking," she said. "I know it's not normally
done but we've got rather unique circumstances right now."
"So we'd give them each a chance to be a temporary Wingsecond, under
K'sedel's guidance?" It was a risk, but the Queen's Wing was the least
dangerous, and they were used to frequent changes in the roster, with
pregnant greenriders coming in and out, and pairs recovering from
injury.
"Only if you think this is a good time for it. K'sedel has such an
excellent record both as a Wingleader and a Weyrlingmaster. He can
give them a great foundation and prepare them for the higher wings."
Shook her head "It's up to you though," she smiled. "I'll continue
the hidework and happily work with whoever you select."
"Let's see what K'sedel thinks. He'll be doing most of the work,
afterall." N'vanik smiled briefly. "It's an interesting idea, though.
Worth trying, at least."
