Description: Ranni flies her final threadfall.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 19 of Turn 10
Notes: Mentioned: R'nar
The hot, humid air sizzled with electricity. An occasional streak of lightning arced through the darkened sky as the higher altitudes met the leading edge of Threadfall.
Down in the Queen's Wing, Ranni fidgeted nervously with the freshly oiled riding straps that crossed over Sukiiths' neckridge. Even though she brushed away R'nar's concerns earlier that morning, her stomach felt like it was writhing with a nest of tunnelsnakes.
She wondered if veteran riders had gotten past the nerves. Did they still have to calm their racing pulses at the start of Threadfall?
}:We're ready.:{ Sukiith said confidently, her insides rumbling from the firestone she had consumed in preparation for the silvery menace.
Ranni exhaled a pent-up breath as the Queen's Wing launched into action. Grabbing hold of the straps, Ranni flattened herself against her dragon, leaning in close as the green veered left and right, dodging ash and clumps of thread that had escaped the upper wings.
As time wore on, her shoulders began to ache from her tensed position, and her mind briefly flitted to thoughts of R'nar, wondering how he fared in the higher altitudes.
}:Firestone.:{ Sukiith ordered.
Ranni opened the sack tied to Sukiiths' straps, her stomach lurching a little as she caught a glimpse of the landscape far, far below. Shaking her head to make herself focus on the task at hand, she grabbed a hunk of the stone and shoved it into the dragon's waiting jaws.
Sukiith crunched noisily on the stone, effortlessly swerving past a Weyrling pair that was delivering firestone to another rider. As the green's sharp teeth ground through another chunk of the stone, Ranni glanced skyward, frowning at the drops of water that had fallen on her riding goggles.
**You have got to be kidding me,** she reached up with her gloved hands to swipe at the raindrops, smearing them on her goggles.
The darkened clouds suddenly burst open, releasing a torrent of rainfall amidst the wriggling spores of thread. The live thread not hindered by rain fell between the water droplets, making it difficult to decipher thread from rain.
**Sukiith!** Ranni gasped in shock as something hot and writhing dug into the exposed flesh where her riding helmet and jacket collar gaped.
The green immediately pulled them /between/ as Ranni slapped at the back of her neck.
}:Are you okay?:{ Sukiith asked as they reappeared into the foray.
Ranni gritted her teeth against the pain of the score, but the void of /between/ turned the live spore to dust. **I'm fine.**
The sky became a darkened swirl of rain, threadfall, flames, and ash.
An arc of lightning seemed to explode beside Ranni, sending a dragon screaming /between/ while Sukiith swerved into the path of a wingmate to avoid the strike.
Ranni's skull exploded with pain and stars danced behind her eyes as Sukiith and the other dragon collided in a tangle of talons and wings. An unbearable weight crushed against her chest as her breath exploded from her body.
**Sukith!!** she screamed, feeling as if she were drowning under the weight, her arms paralyzed by her sides, hands aching to claw at whatever was holding her down.
The noises swirling around her were a nightmarish cacophony of dragon screams and the wind rushing past them as they plummeted.
**Sukith, please!** she screamed again, searching for her dragon's response.
From what felt like a far, far away place in the darkness, she felt Sukiith reach out to her, and then an icy, cold wave of relief washed over her, as silence descended.
