There was nothing worse than flying Threadfall in the rain. R'nar's leathers were sopping wet and clung to him like a second skin. He could feel sweat streaming down his face to mingle with the rain.
**Hot rain,** he thought with disgust as he motioned for the Weyrling to toss the bag of firestone.
Catching the tossed sack with a grunt, he fed Iorath the phosphorus chunks of rock while squeezing his thighs to steady himself as they swayed in the air current.
**Up!** R'nar called out as he caught sight of some silvery thread glinting among the rain clouds above them.
Iorath pulled them /between/ so quickly that R'nar lost his hold on the firestone sack and dropped it into the dark void.
**Damn,** he thought as they reappeared into the sky, in formation with the rest of their Wing. There had been some stone left in the bag, but Iorath had fed on enough to blast a clump of thread in front of them.
Something he hadn't expected before joining the fighting Wings was the sheer noise of Threadfall. With so many dragons thundering to and from /between/, riders shouting, and dragons bellowing - it was a din of swirling noise in the skies.
Most of the time, R'nar became so focused in his own thoughts that he rarely even noticed the noise, but today, for some reason, it all seemed to be pressing in on him.
As the rain tapered off, it was replaced by full clumps of writhing spores. **There we go,** R'nar urged his dragon, urging him onward as Iorath spewed fire, turning everything in front of him to shriveled ash.
R'nar whooped and thumped his lifemate on the flank, adrenaline coursing through his veins.
The rest of Threadfall passed without mishap for the bronze pair and he slumped in his straps as Iorath took them /between/ and back to Dolphin Cove.
They arrived out of /between/ high above the Weyr, but still R'nar's eyes automatically zeroed in on the ledge that he and Ranni shared.
**Where is Sukiith?** he asked Iorath. He knew that Ranni had been scheduled to fly in the first half of fall, and typically when she was in the first wave, she and Sukiith were already cleaned up and waiting for his and Iorath's return.
Iorath's hesitation was evident as he slowly descended for the Weyrbowl.
**Iorath?** R'nar said in a more demanding tone.
}:They are gone. /Between/.:{ Iorath finally answered, his tone reflecting the crushing despair that washed over R'nar.
"What?!" R'nar exploded out loud, his brow furrowing in disbelief.
}:It's true.:{ Iorath insisted as he felt his rider's immediate wall of denial pushing against him.
"It can't be."
As soon as Iorath's talons touched down, R'nar leaped from his lifemate's neckridge, ripping off his helmet and goggles as he stormed toward his mother's office. She would know what was going on. There was no way Ranni was dead.... She couldn't be... He wouldn't believe it!
