Cosani

Cosani

"Hey Reyela," Cosani said as she sat down across from her in the
dining hall. "Barracks are filling up, huh?"

"Ugh." Reyela got up to sit next to Cosani and put her head on
the greenrider's shoulder. "There's so much snoring. I've been
stuffing my ears with wool so I can sleep."

"Ugh, sorry you're stuck with it. Maybe this time you'll be able to
escape . . . and then you'll be stuck with all the snoring in the
_weyrling_ barracks." Cosani laughed.

"Ha ha. In the highly unlikely event that I Impress this time, at
least moving to the weyrling barracks has a definite end date." Reyela
straightened and rested her chin on her hand.

"I couldn't _wait_ to get my own weyr." Although just being away from
the hold had been such a relief the annoyances of sharing a sleeping
space with so many others had been minor in comparison.

Reyela sighed. "You're so lucky to have your own space."

"I am, but I wish you could have it too," Cosani said.

"Mmm." The Candidate sighed again. "If I don't Impress this time, I
think I'm going to ask for my Journeyman's test. I think I'm ready,
and if I pass I might be able to move out of the Candidate barracks...
unless there's eggs on the Sands." Although it would be nice to not
have to spend any time there anymore. She'd been taking the Candidate
classes alongside her Beastcrafting lessons since she was twelve, and
although the material for Beastcrafting changed, the lessons for
Candidates didn't vary much.

"Yeah, I bet you can pass. And then you'd only have to share with one
or two other people in a journeyman weyr." Cosani wondered if she
would have taken up a Craft if she'd gone through a few more Hatchings
without Impressing. Just to have something else to do that wasn't
basic chores and Candidate classes.

"Anyway. Enough about me. What's new with you?" Reyela asked brightly.

"Nothing, really. It's kind of... well, fighting Thread and stuff is
never _boring_ but outside of that things are kind of dull. I think I
need to get out and go to a Gather or something." Visiting a Hold as a
greenrider was a very different experience to being trapped in one
growing up.

The candidate's eyes lit up. "If you go, want some company?"

"You just want to get out of here," Cosani said with a smile.

"Like you just said you did?" Reyela rolled her eyes. "If I had a
dragon, I wouldn't have to bum rides."

"I know, I know." Cosani nudged her with an elbow. "Sure you can come,
but you need to spend your own marks if you want anything." She didn't
want to admit that she liked the idea of having company.

Reyela rolled her eyes. "Like you have any marks."

"Is that a clever way to get to me to brag about how many marks I have
so then you can ask me to share?"

"Does that mean you _do_ have marks?!" Reyela asked, her eyes wide.

"I have a few," Cosani said cautiously. "From errands outside my duties."

"Good. Then you won't be lusting after mine." Reyela blew a kiss at
Cosani as she stood. "Don't 'forget' to pick me up before you go. I'm
free next rest day. If you leave me here while you're off having fun,
I'm filling your bed with manure."

Cosani stuck out her tongue. "You _definitely_ need to get out of
those barracks so you can grow up."

"Whatever. You love me. But I'm serious about the manure."

"Shards, I'll take you. Okay?" Cosani rolled her eyes.

Reyela blew her a kiss. "I love you too."
