Characters: R'lor, S'kand
Description: R'lor meets up with his acquaintance S'kand and asks for advice on adjusting to Dolphin Cove.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 6 of Turn 10
Notes: Mentioned: Irrkali
R'lor really shouldn't have been surprised. Dragonriders moved about,
so it wasn't that unlikely that he knew a few people at Dolphin Cove
already. There was Irrkali of course, but he'd forgotten that S'kand
had also moved here. They had served together on the weyrlingstaff
until S'kand transferred to be closer to his extended family.
What reminded him was Kularth chatting with S'kand's bronze. Despite
dragons' poor memory, they seemed to remember their friends well
enough. R'lor wasn't sure if he could consider S'kand a friend, but
they were at least friendly with each other. **Could you ask Jagobroth
if his rider would like to meet?**
}:Mine wants to know if yours would like to meet with him,:{ Kularth
told Jagobroth.
}:But of course!:{ Jagobroth answered jovially. }:He is happy to hear
you are here. Where shall they meet?:{
Kularth paused as he spoke to his rider. }:He asks if the dining hall
would be all right.:{
}:But of course!:{ Jagobroth assured his friend. }:He will be there
momentarily.:{
Within a short while, S'kand had arrived at the dining hall and began
to look about for R'lor.
R'lor had chosen a spot where he could see the main entrance. It was
easy to see the big bronzerider as soon as he stepped into the dining
cavern and R'lor stood to wave him over.
S'kand smiled as he spotted R'lor and went to join him. He pulled him
into a jovial hug and clapped him on the back.
"R'lor! It's wonderful to see you again! Jagobroth says you and
Kularth are here now?" he asked.
R'lor was surprised at the hug, returning it a bit awkwardly. "Yes,
we've accepted the Weyrlingmaster Third position."
"I gave half a mind to applying to take it myself," said S'kand. He
had always been hugger, but he made a note to remember again that
R'lor was not. "But seeing as I would have missed out on you moving up
here where it's warm, I'm glad I sat on it too long!"
"You would have made a good 'Third," R'lor said, feeling a small
twinge of guilt. "I didn't want to leave Rising Moons, but it became
clear my opportunities for advancement there were limited." More like
nonexistent.
"The kids didn't especially want to move here," S'kand admitted. "But
this is the closest thing I have to an ancestral home after Thayan
Peak... All of our family moved here at the beginning of the Pass.
Their old hold was all wood. And anyway, I wanted the kids to have an
opportunity to know their grandparents."
"I'll do what I can to help make Dolphin Cove feel like home for you,
too." He smiled.
"Thank you, S'kand. I appreciate it," R'lor said. "Have your children
warmed to being at Dolphin Cove?"
"They have! The youngest have already stopped grousing, and the oldest
can get back down to visit easily enough," S'kand chuckled. "Even
without my help."
"Yes, the benefits of being a rider. We're never truly far from those
we care about."
"I think the warm weather convinced them most thoroughly," S'kand
laughed. "But yes, dragonwings and between do make separation easier."
"Yes, this heat is going to take some getting used to." R'lor tugged
at his collar.
"Have you spent much time in the water yet?" S'kand asked. "That goes
a long way to cooling things off. Especially if you've got a motorized
fan in your weyr to go with it."
"I've been in the lake, of course, but I haven't had time to get down
to the beach. I did luckily get one of the weyrs with a fan, however
my office is lacking that." And even a fan only made it moderately
cooler during the heat of the day.
"I'll have to find a technician to introduce you to – if you make
friends with the right one, it can help speed things up getting one
put in," S'kand chuckled. "Keeping cool in the office definitely helps
the mind stay focused on the work."
"Yes, that would help. I'd appreciate it." R'lor didn't want to ask
for too much so soon after arriving, but he also wasn't going to turn
down help if S'kand was offering.
"I'll have Jagobroth let Kularth know once I've got one," said S'kand.
He was more than happy to help an old friend settle in.
"Thank you. Do you have any other tips to making life here more pleasant?"
"Well, other than keeping cool, it's pretty easy living here," S'kand
said, looking around happily at their surroundings. "Maybe wear a hat
if you're going to be outside in the sun for a long while. Or if you
tend to burn easily, ask the Healers for some sun salve."
R'lor nodded. "Good advice. I hope I'll be able to settle in soon.
Moving is... a bit difficult."
"It's always hard to start over in a new place," said S'kand. "If
there's anything else I can do to help you, all you have to do is say
the word. If you don't have plans tonight after work, we can grab a
drink, eh?"
The bluerider almost said he was busy, but a little socializing
wouldn't hurt and at least S'kand was familiar. "Yes, I'd like that."
