Description: N'vanik checks on Cyradis the day after the poisoning at the Hatching.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 18 of Turn 10
By the time N'vanik had dealt with the immediate issues after the
poisoning, it had been late. He'd wanted to check on Cyradis and the
baby but he also knew she needed rest, so he waited until the next
day. It was probably better all around, because although he was still
furious, he was in better control of his emotions.
After gaining permission through Panitath, N'vanik stepped into
Cyradis's weyr. "Hey. How are you doing?" His gaze slid over her,
looking for signs of distress.
She held out a hand to her Weyrleader with a wan smile. "I've been
better," she murmured. "How's everyone else?"
N'vanik took her hand and squeezed it. "They're fine. The blue
hatchling is recovering and his rider seems okay."
"Oh..." she sighed in relief. "I was so worried we'd lose him before
they even got to know each other." She shook her head smiling again.
"I shouldn't, I know. You have everything under control."
"I wish." The Weyrleader sighed. "We got lucky. The warning from
Alyena, Y'gel's quick work . . . and Urlene's poor firelizard."
Cyradis shook her head, "I know," she said. "Yet Urlene just carries
on. She stuck me on bed rest so I'm forbidden to get up for any
reason." She smiled up at N'vanik. "Panitath needs a bath and oil.
Could we get someone detailed to take care of that?"
"Of course. Maybe get one of the older Candidates to supervise a small
crew." After all, a gold was a lot of dragon to wash. "Might help
distract them from being left standing . . . and everything else."
She could feel the satisfaction from her gold where she lay with her
mate. "She likes that idea," she smiled at her handsome Weyrleader.
Then she shook her head. "I've never been forced to just sit still
before. It somehow feels wrong."
"I imagine it must be hard." Cyradis was a busy woman. "I want you to
rest, but . . . would hidework help? Or maybe I could get you some
good books." He smiled.
A slow smile lifted the corners of her mouth, "Of course that would
help," she said. "I like both idea's she added after a moment, "but if
you have some hidework you can hand off without too much trouble," she
shrugged. "I don't like feeling useless."
"You're not useless. Your job right now is to rest up so you and the
babe stay healthy." His throat constricted at the thought of losing
either one of them. "But if you're really that desperate for something
to do, I won't complain about having a little less hidework." He
smiled.
She chuckled. "Well don't expect an offer like this to come along
every day," she said with a lift of one of her eyebrows. "At least my
brain doesn't ache all the time like my back," she shook her head. "So
I'm happy to use it for the good of the Weyr," she smiled back at him.
"So," she said softly. "have you thought about names yet?" Not that
she wanted to leave K'deren out of it but she privately thought
N'vanik was the father this time. The timing just worked out that way.
"Not yet," he said with a slightly embarrassed chuckle. "You uh, want
part of my name in there?" He liked the idea of having a kid with
Cyradis, even if they couldn't be sure.
"Of course I do N'vanik." she said softly. "I do believe this is your
child. Whether it's easy to tell or not, you have every right to be
involved."
He ran a hand through his hair. "Well, thanks. Did you have any name ideas?"
The corner of her mouth twitched. "I've been thinking about it of
course but have to say, in my experience the child rather names
themselves. I had a name all picked out for the last one and at the
last moment he just didn't look that that name fit him. Does that even
make sense?" She chuckled.
"Dragons literally name themselves, so no that doesn't seem too odd."
He laughed.
"Okay then," she nodded. "About that hide work?" she rubbed her hands together
He laughed again. "I'll go clean my desk and see what I can hand off
to you. But not _too_ much. Your main job is resting, all right?" If
he had to, he'd try to get Panitath to mentally sit on her if Cyradis
wasn't resting enough.
"Yeah yeah," she rolled her eyes. "At this rate I'm going to forget
how to walk!"
"Maybe you and the baby can learn together then."
"Very funny," she chuckled at him. Trust N'vanik to lighten her mood
even as she lightened his load. They were a good team. Likely the
reason Panitath kept choosing Loseth. "Well," she said, making shooing
motions. "Go get me something to do."
