O'rosin

O'rosin

Obrosin stared at the little cot. His little satchel of belongings looked even smaller and worn against the nice blankets and pillow. The nice clothes that had been selected for him, more changes of clothing than he'd ever owned. A single set of nice clothes, too, for things like Turn's End and Gathers, they said. The chest at the foot of the bed would have been the nicest thing he'd ever seen, if he hadn't seen the rest of the Weyr before he'd been left to get himself settled in the candidate barracks.

He'd nearly lost his lunch when the green searchdragon took flight. The Searchrider, E'tariax, had warned him about looking down and around that first time in the air, but he did anyway. His father and brothers nearly disappeared as the dragon took flight, the land spanning out around them like it was never-ending. In those few moments, Obrosin was certain that he had seen more than he'd ever seen in his entire life.

/Between/ was another thing entirely. He was pretty sure he did vomit then, but when they reappeared over the Weyr there was no sour taste in his mouth nor any evidence on the deep green hide. The Weyr stretched out below them, a massive caldera larger than anything he'd ever seen and beyond any words he could ever hope to call forward. The sea was the only constant, its expanse as endless as it was back home. That was comforting, in its own way.

And the dragons. He'd only ever seen one at a time (two now, that E'tariax said he needed an escort with a laugh that rang hollow to his ears). There were more than he could count or could comprehend, flying or sitting or doing the little hop-hop that Aphirith did towards him scarcely ten minutes prior. He didn't know how any could fly without crashing into each other, or how they even told each other apart but Apirith's answering roar suggested they must.

E'tariax must have understood his shock. He helped Obrosin down from the dragon and guided him, gently, into the caverns where he was going to live. He introduced Obrosin to the Headwoman's staff and helped him answer the proper hidework. Obrosin wouldn't forget how the woman's mouth formed a thin line when he admitted that he didn't know how to spell his name or when his birthing day was. She wrote it down for him and slid the piece of hide over, and he stared blankly at the etching of charcoal across the page. His birthingday she listed as the first day of the first month, which he supposed was fine enough. They talked about finding a harper for him to teach him his letters and his sums, things that sounded faintly familiar from his youth. He could recite the times tables song for them, if they wanted it, but it didn't seem like they did.

E'tariax escorted the two of them again to a storeroom and helped select more clothes and a strange, white robe, that he said was for The Hatching which explained nothing. Then he escorted him to the barracks and introduced him to someone called the Weyrlingstaff, though the name fell away from too many details. E'tariax also suggested he visit him, too, to make sure he was settling in just fine. Obrosin didn't know how that would help, but it sounded more like a polite order that he nodded.

A headache groaned in the corners of Obrosin's temples. It was nearing dinnertime, he expected, though the entire experience surely hadn't taken that long. He didn't really know where to go now that E'tariax had left, but he expected that if he sat here long enough others would return, and he could follow them to wherever dinner could be had.
