O'rosin

O'rosin

Obrosin spent the entire class staring blankly at the board. He tried very hard to keep his expression neutral, though it came out more like a stressed grimace. He'd been given hide and charcoal to take notes, but the only marks he'd made were a few experimental notches in the corners of the pages. Partially to test the feel of it out in his hands, partially because it looked like other students were busy writing things down and he didn't want to look like he wasn't pulling his own weight or didn't care. Still, the class was entirely lost on him.

"Hey, so…" He said to the candidates nearest him as others began to pack up to head to lunch. "What's the difference between a Weyr and a Weyrhold?"

Corland had half-risen when he heard the question; he wasn’t sure that it was directed at him, exactly, but if he could help, he would. This kid -- well, young man, really -- had seemed a little lost, though he couldn’t really put his finger on why and how.

“Weyrhold’s when the Weyrs were pretty much supporting themselves during the Interval, I think?” he said. ‘Cause they were Weyrs but also Holds.”

“Whether they grow their food or it comes in on tithes. You know. Sort of.” Cirina tried, helpfully as she looked up from stowing away her notes. Which was actually mostly doodles this time, she’d heard most of this before.

"Sort of." Obrosin agreed, though it didn't look like it was much clearer. "But why change the name when Weyrs are just where dragons live? Was it confusing before?"

Corland considered this, rubbing his chin. “Ah… I don’t know. I never thought about it like that. Maybe… it was a change that was a big deal when they made it, for some reason?” He looked at Cirina, vaguely recalling that she might be weyrbred and maybe know the answer better than he would.

“Maybe it’s how they got the holders on board,” Cirina shrugged. “Made it more appealing to them or something.”

"Oh, thank Faranth. I thought it was a dumb question." Obrosin said, relieved. "I didn't understand half of that lesson. My head feels about ready to burst with stuff I don't know. Can I ask you another one?" He barrelled on without pausing, "What or who is Thayan Peak?"

Corland snapped his fingers. “Oh, that one I know for sure! Thayan Peak Weyrhold is what Dolphin Cove used to be. Sort of. There was an earthquake that tore it up, so the people who were left all moved here and named it Dolphin Cove!” He shivered a little. “Not too fond of the idea of the ground moving under my feet.”

Obrosin stared off into the middle distance a moment as the wheels turned. "Whoa whoa- _that's_ what that means?" He asked incredulously, "The ground can move around so much it can tear up a _Weyr_?"

“It’s terrifying,” Cirina said flatly, “it’s what destroyed River Bluff, as well. The earth shook and the Hatching Caverns caved in.”

"That is scary." Obrosin agreed, and then squinted at the map on the wall. "Wait…which one is River Bluff?"

Corland squinted at the map, trying to remember his notes, and then put his finger against a spot on it. “Right here. The riders and territory got split up after. That was probably pretty hard to deal with.” He glanced at Cirina sympathetically. “That’s where you were from? I’m sorry.”

“Thank you. My family got out, at least,” she looked down, spending a few moments rearranging the things in her bag just to make sure her expression was even before she looked back up. “Hopefully it doesn’t happen here.”

Obrosin was too dumbfounded for common sense or general empathy. "Could it happen here?" He asked. "Are there places where it _can't_ happen, or can the ground just decide to give you a bad day whenever?"

“Could probably happen here,” Cirina guessed, “but if it does, I know I want to be able to fly right out.” It wasn’t the main reason to want to Impress, but it certainly didn’t hurt.

“I don’t know enough about it to say,” Corland said, frowning thoughtfully. “Maybe there’s places where the ground’s… I dunno… solid? I don’t know what makes it move, but I don’t like thinking about it much. Like the ocean. That makes me a little nervous, too, because it’s so big and deep and is never still. I guess that’s a dumb thing to say living here, but it’s not like I’m _terrified_ or anything -- it’s just sort of unsettling.”

“Before the earthquake, a tsunami flooded River Bluff… that’s when I was evacuated out. So, you know, the ocean can get you, too,” Cirina said helpfully.

"My oldest brother was lost at sea." Obrosin said softly. "Whole boat, with my uncle and a few cousins, too. They were late coming back and the hurricane whipped up faster than we thought. Not entirely sure what happened to them, really, but we never saw them again."

Corland shook his head in wonder. “Nowhere’s safe, I guess. Ground moving under you, ocean sweeping you off, skies full of Thread…’least with a dragon we’d have a quick escape from any of it. Not foolproof, but better than nothing. And… somebody to face it with.”

Obrosin stared blankly at the map. He still had no idea what he was doing, but at least he knew what a Thayan Peak was? And that the ground could swallow him up whenever it wanted. That was neat information too. "I didn't mean to bring the entire conversation down." He said instead. "Um. And I didn't really understand anything that happened in the last couple candlemarks. Do you think I could bother y'all again? If it's not too boring for you."

“Want to go get some lunch and then we can go over whatever again?” Cirina stood, pulling her bag over her shoulder, “I don’t mind going over it again- I’ve heard it a few times, but I’m hungry. You can borrow my old notes if you want.”

“Yeah, come on… Obrosin, right?” Corland thought he knew, but wanted to make sure. Maybe he hadn’t done a great job of keeping track of people. But this guy seemed a little lost, and he couldn’t stand the thought that somebody might be struggling. Being new to the Weyr was… an experience, for sure. “I can help, too. We’ll get it all straight in your noggin, no problem.”

Obrosin breathed a sigh of relief. "Obrosin, yes. If you don't mind me borrowing your notes, I'd appreciate it." Maybe not to _read_, per se, but at least if he stared at the letters everyone would think he was studying instead of trying to remember which letter was which. "Lunch sounds good, too. Maybe by the time we're done my head won't be so fuzzy."
