K'don was doing his best not to cry. He could have left-- gone with
his father. He had the opportunity. But how could he? Everything he
had ever built for himself was at Dolphin Cove. His father could only
ever be three heartbeats away, but the professional relationship he
had built with Y'gel? That took Turns.
And then there was Cyradis. She would not come to visit him elsewhere.
He was already near enough to panic over the thought that his father
leaving had already changed the way she saw him. That she could never
see him the same way again. But if he left, too? That would seal it.
She would certainly no longer be his mother then. He had no intention
of just giving her up when she was still right there.
Maciath had done him the favor of asking Panitath if he could visit,
and when she was ready, he went to her.
"H-hey. I, um. I came to... I mean, I know you're probably not...
feeling the best, and... w-well, I don't want to bother you, but I
just wanted to come and let you know that I-I, um, I'm sorry. And I
love you. I-if that's still alright for me to say, of course."
Tears welled up in her eyes but she smiled at him. "Of course it's
alright K'don," she said. "I love you too. Come here," she stood and
opened her arms for a hug.
K'don felt a weight lift off of him. It must have been the weight that
was holding in his tears, too, because they overflowed as he hugged
Cyradis tightly.
"I'll always stay," he said.
She leaned back and smiled up into his eyes knowing he believed what
he was saying. "You're getting tall," she said. She didn't want to
doubt what he'd said but for her it was hard to believe right now
anyway. She'd give him the benefit of the doubt. "I needed that
hug," she said.
"Me, too," K'don admitted. He had always known how lucky he was to
have Cyradis in his life, and he was more relieved than he could put
into words that his father had not managed to ruin that for him.
"How's the baby?"
"Blissfully unaware," she smiled a little shaky. "Have to keep myself
on an even keel so he doesn't get upset. He's too young." The little
guy was just over a month old and her emotions seemed to affect him.
"How are you doing? How's Maciath?"
"Mash doesn't really care one way or another past how I feel about it.
And... I feel a little better now. I don't understand wanting to
leave. I probably never will," said K'don. "So I'm a little angry.
But... he can do whatever he wants, and I'll stay here. I'm going to
try to get to the creche more often now. If Dad doesn't want to be
there for Kendren every day, then I will be."
"Thank you," she said, slightly amazed. "Kendran loves you ya know. I
don't think he knows the difference between a da and a brother right
now so any time you can give him will be wonderful." she put her arm
around his waist and squeezed again.
We adults can deal with our issue but children have no clue. I haven't
had a chance to see Kielya yet she's with her dad at Barrier Lake
right now.
"They can't possibly expect you to be the one to fly across the
world," said K'don. "You're not just any old dragonrider. If nobody
brings her to see you, it isn't your fault. You know-- I could,
actually. I'm not banned from Barrier Lake yet."
She chuckled and patted his shoulder. "That was not your fault and I'm
sure D'hol would welcome you visiting your sister."
"I'll have to make the time for it," said K'don. He did not want
distance to take his family from him, or them from each other, any
more than it already had. He hugged Cyradis again.
"Thank you for being my mom even though you didn't have to."
Tears welled up again and she dashed them away. She'd never cried this
much that she could remember. "You make it very easy, K'don. I'm so
proud of you."
K'don smiled as brightly as ever.
"I'm so glad. Thank you."
