Description: Kailis got it in her head to bring Ketlyn biscuits, so she brings Ketlyn biscuits.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 10, day 17 of Turn 11
Several of the technicians were talking about them. Biscuits, that is. They were crispy on the outside and chewy in the center, and they tasted amazing when you dipped them in klah. They were ever so creatively designated "klah biscuits".
Anyway, Kailis had been thinking of Ketlyn ever since they had shared a wonderful day full of chores mostly by themselves, and she wondered whether she might also enjoy having biscuits together, whether mostly by themselves or otherwise. If the other technicians were eating them by the dozen, they had to be good.
"Hello," she greeted Ketlyn once she had wandered long enough in places she might be to run into her. "I got you a box." She held out the box of one dozen klah biscuits at her. Perhaps a dozen was a few too many.
"A box?" Ketlyn wiped her dirty hands on a rag on her belt before accepting the proffered box. It smelled fantastic, and she smiled when she opened the lid. "Oh, biscuits! Thank you!" She took one out and nibbled the edge before offering the box back to Kailis. "But... why? Not that I'm complaining. Nobody's ever brought me biscuits before."
"Oh, I wanted to have biscuits with you," said Kailis. She took the box back and pulled one out for herself. "They're supposed to be good with klah. Would you like to come get a klah? Oh. You're busy. I'll bring you a klah."
Ketlyn laughed. She felt herself flush and was grateful for her dark skin. Kailis was so odd, but it was flattering to have someone actually seek her out. She was used to being overlooked. "Right now!? Um-- I'd love to have klah with you, but I have to finish this." She gestured at the mess of machined parts around herself and the rasps at her side. "I just need to file the burrs off the metal. If you help me, it'll go faster?" she added hopefully.
"Oh! I'd be happy to help," said Kailis. "Sorry. I probably should have offered that first." She had been so focused on her goal, she had neglected to read the room. Hardly ever happened...
Ketlyn passed her a rasp. "What made you think of biscuits?"
"I saw some other technicians eating them," said Kailis. "And they seemed to enjoy them. So I got some."
"Seems logical." She wanted to ask why Kailis had thought of _her_ but that seemed self-centred. "There's so much baking to try here. There was at Dolphin Cover Weyr too, but it was different stuff."
"The baker was very proud of these, though I don't know the first thing about baking, so I wouldn't have known what she was talking about if I'd asked her how she did it," said Kailis. "I may have overdone it getting the whole box. But now you'll have some for later."
"I appreciate that. And _we_ have some for later." Ketlyn was quiet for a moment as she worked. "I tried apprenticing to the Baker Craft for a while. It's kind of boring, and you have to get up too early in the morning."
"Huh. I never considered it." Kailis had never considered doing anything but becoming a technician-- the Candidate thing was completely spontaneous. She touched her tummy where the green had poked her. "Getting up early sounds like a flaming drag."
"Oh. it was the _worst_. Up way before dawn to bake bread and muffins and scones and whatever else, and then in bed well before dinnertime so you could get up and do it all over again. I think I lasted... two months?"
"I'm impressed you could last that long. Or that anyone can," said Kailis. She could probably sleep until noon every day if they would let her.
Ketlyn snuck another nibble of the biscuit. They _would_ be good dipped in klah... "What made you choose the Technician Craft?"
"Nothing made me; I wanted to. I guess I've always known it was what I wanted to do. My father is a Technician. So that probably didn't hurt," said Kailis. "Did someone make you become a Smith?"
The other candidate shook her head. "I kind of fell into it. I tried a bunch of different Crafts after I was Searched and the Smithcraft is the most interesting. You're lucky that you knew what you wanted to do." She thought of her little sister, convinced that she could become an Animal Smith, and then wondered what her other siblings would choose if they had the choice-- or if they'd ever considered it. It was hard on the heart to want something that was so far out of reach.
"You're good at being a Smith," said Kailis. "What were you doing before you got Searched?"
Ketlyn sighed. Now _that_ was a complicated question. "Worked on my parents' farm and helping with my siblings. Training as a Smith is much more interesting, let me tell you."
"I've lived in a Hold before. And the second time, my father wasn't there to teach me," said Kailis. No siblings, though. Z'kai did not have to go back. "Training as a Technician is also more interesting."
"I thought about it, but I'm scared to get electrocuted." Ketlyn smiled ruefully. "Which is pretty silly if you think about it, because if I somehow actually Impress a dragon it means I'd be facing Thread and that's way, way scarier."
"The guy who Searched me thought so, too. He wasn't scared of getting electrocuted At All," said Kailis. "He actually did a pretty impressive job, though. For an amateur."
"How did you get searched?"
"Hm? Oh. I went to help a rider who was trying to install his own custom light fixture in his weyr. He almost had it. And then his dragon poked me."
Ketlyn's eyebrows rose. "...poked you?"
"Yeah, she just kinda walloped me right in the middle with her snoot. Not trying to hurt me, but... Well, dragons are big. So it didn't feel great," said Kailis.
The other Candidate laughed. "Oh no! I can imagine, but at least you got a good Search story out of it. And... I think we're done!" She set aside the last axel aside and tidied up her rasps. "Want to go find that klah now?"
"Absolutely, I do."
