A surge of excitement went through the Weyr when the dragons started humming. Saedyna knew by now that she didn't have to rush, there was plenty of time for her to take a brief bath and put on her white Candidate robes. Amidst the chaos of the barracks, she sat on her cot and ran her hands over the jewelry in her box. She didn't want to risk getting yelled at for wearing anything now. Afterward, she could pick out something to go with her new Hatching dress. Even if she couldn't have a dragon, at least she could go to the party. Saedyna smiled as the call came for the Candidates to line up.
The wait seemed to last forever, but finally the Weyrlingmaster led them into the Hatching cavern. She'd never get over how many _people_ there were, a sea of tiny faces watching them from the Stands.
Saedyna stood near Cirina and Tirraze, staring longingly at the rocking eggs. Faranth how she wished one of the dragons would choose her. But she wasn't a real Candidate, and she would stand here Hatching after Hatching until she aged out, watching her friends -- and enemies -- Impress.
The first to hatch was a green, and her eyes followed it as it wandered far away from her. Then there was a commotion and she turned to see Vytian and Blue both lying on the Sands, and there was _blood_ . . . and then they both Impressed. Vytian got a _green_! Ha! And she'd been worried that he was going to flirt with her. She smiled, happy for Blue.
More and more hatchlings emerged, little greens and browns and blues all over. They were awkward, and wet from the egg, but beautiful too because they were special.
A blue dragon headed toward her, and Saedyna assumed there must be a boy nearby he was looking for, but then Tirraze bent to carefully tuck his errant wing onto his back, and the blue's eyes burst into a rainbow of color.
Saedyna gasped, a hand flying to her mouth. Just like Kadira. A girl on blue! And this time it was her _friend_. She wanted to congratulate her, to celebrate with her, but Tirraze was already leading her new lifemate away. Saedyna's gaze stayed locked on the pair, her throat tight with emotion. She was happy, and jealous, and oh, she wanted that for herself so much. Impressing blue would make her extra special, but it wasn't that important. If she could have a green, a beautiful little green all her --
}:I am here!:{
The voice was impossibly clear in the noise echoing through the Hatching Ground. Startled, she looked to see where it had come from.
}:Here!:{
Saedyna looked down at the most perfect little emerald green dragon. Had she . . . _heard_ the dragon?
}:Yes. I am Avarith and you are mine.:{
Love suffused her. All the hurt and scared and lonely places inside Saedyna seemed to fill up and all that mattered was Avarith. **This is impossible.** And yet there she was, Avarith's warm hide pressed against her as Saedyna hugged the little green. She'd waited her whole life to feel loved and wanted. She'd waited Turns to feel _safe_.
}:I will make sure no one ever hurts you again,:{ Avarith said fiercely.
A sob burst from Saedyna. Her dragon would always protect her and love her, the certainty of that shining through her.
}:I am very hungry, Saedyna.:{
And Saedyna could feel it, the hollow burning in her stomach. "I'll get you some food."
She could barely take her eyes off her new lifemate as she led her toward the food buckets. She was like a perfect jewel, her precious and impossible Avarith.
