It was nice to have someone to talk with. He didn't understand much of the Weyr gossip, but Cirina was so excited to tell someone who _hadn't_ grown up amidst the drama that it was easy to play along. They got some citrusy juice and tucked themselves away at a corner table in the dining hall, far enough away from most prying ears.
"So…you called Weyrwoman Cyradis 'auntie'. Are you two actually related?"
“Well, not really, but in the Weyr way. My mother’s ex-weyrmate and Cyradis’s ex-weyrmate were father and son. I can get away with it, though. I haven't had to use it to get out of trouble yet,” she joked.
He had to replace 'weyrmate' with 'husband' in his head for it to make sense, and Cirina could watch the wheels slowly turning. "Sure. The Weyr Way." He managed. "Is this easy for you to keep straight? I guess any family tree would sound complicated to someone new."
Cirina shrugged, “It helps that we're from River Bluff. I’m sure it gets more complicated the more connections.” Turning to look at Obrosin, she asked, “Don't Holders have huge families? Like dozens of siblings?”
"Not a dozen," Obrosin protested, then paused. "But…pretty close. But it's not like…that kind of complicated. Although I guess two of my brothers-in-law are cousins. That sounds like it's almost the same? That's what I mean, though, like I'll get used to Weyr relationships the longer I'm here."
“Yeah, but if you ever need any help we can start drawing charts,” she suggested playfully. “But, that makes Naradis my sort-of-cousin. I think it would be fun if we Impressed together.”
"I may need it." He definitely needed it, but Obrosin couldn't read that well yet and wasn't about to admit that to a lady. "I guess? Do you and Naradis get along?"
“Well, we get along well enough.” Cirina paused, “...I get along with most people, though. So maybe it doesn’t matter who I Impress with. You made it less fun sounding, nice going.”
"My sisters say it's my special talent." Obrosin agreed. "I believe you though."
“Do you miss them? My brother is at another weyr and he can pop over for a visit, but I still miss being able to just go talk to him.” After a pause, she added, “My older brother. The toddler isn’t a great conversationalist.”
"Yeah, but it's okay. If I Impress like the Searchrider thinks, I'll be able to pop over for a visit too." Although he still wasn't entirely over the last time he had to go _between_. R'lor said it was different when it's your own dragon. Eager to change the subject, "So what else do I need to know around here?"
“Well, Rilfayne is one you should watch out for. Real confident he’s going to Impress well and really impressed with dragonrider lineage,” Cirina said, “he’s not likely to think highly of you.”
"Oh, that guy? Yeah, I get the sense he doesn't. He didn't much like talking to me the other day. He didn't know what the buttons on his shirt do, either." Obrosin added with a teasing eyeroll.
“Oh, that's just a Dolphin Cove thing, haven't you seen the jokes? We hate shirts here,” Cirina teased. She was perfectly well dressed.
"I've noticed." Obrosin said. "I heard it's going to get worse in the summer. I dunno how y'all ain't getting sunburned, with your junk out like that. Rilfayne's wasn't out, at least."
“Oh, did you want it to be? Did you try asking him nicely?”
"No!" Obrosin's face heated. "Gross. Do people ride their dragons like that? Doesn't that, like, chafe?"
Cirina snickered, “No, people don’t ride their dragons like that, can you imagine? It gets cold up there.”
“What about Corland? I’ll bet he’d look good just wandering around with the shirt off where it wasn’t rude to stare,” there was an unspoken etiquette in the barracks… sort of. “Those arms are nice, right?”
The blush didn't go away. Instead it spread down his neck and to his ears. "No! I mean, he looks strong, I guess, but I wasn't _looking_. Doesn't he have eyes for Blue? Those two are awfully close for two guys who are just friends."
“Oh, there is no way they are ‘just friends’. They just need to make out already and cut the tension. Sorry, I can’t help set you up with him, that’s one I’d lose,” Cirina elbowed him playfully.
"I don't want to get set up with anyone!" Obrosin answered too quickly. "R'lor said relationships aren't allowed in weyrling training."
She made a show of leaning back, looking around, checking him from all sides, “I don’t see any baby dragons here. And you’re supposed to practice because Flights are intense. No one wants someone totally clueless in a flightroom.”
"That is _not_ a today problem!" Obrosin exclaimed, flustered. "I was Searched so I could Stand at the hatching. I'm not here to court anyone. And even if I did, that's hardly enough time to do…_that_…with anyone!"
“I’m glad it’s not a today problem, you’re going to take a little polishing,” She was grinning, clearly enjoying flustering him, “I mean, really it doesn’t take all that much time. It’s a Weyr, courting is a lot less complicated and no one is trading llama for anyone’s hand in marriage.”
Cirina was succeeding. He was only getting more flustered with each word. "I don't…I'm not…We don't do that!" Obrosin finally managed. He stood up quickly. "We're going to be late for lessons." He said loudly.
Her snickering followed him as he walked away.
