K'don

K'don

It hurt, when her grandfather had sat her down and told her that he was leaving with her uncle K'reyel. It hurt being left behind again, but Reyela finally felt like she was building a life for herself somewhere again after what had happened at River Bluff. Of course K'sedel had asked her to come with him. Of course, she'd said no.

The nice thing about dragons is that no matter where her family was, they were only a trip /between/ away. Northern Continent or South, there was just three heartbeats of nothing between her own weyr and a warm hug. And it wasn't as if she saw her Grandfather or Uncle every day anyway. What really would change?

Still, Reyela found herself looking for her Uncle and Grandfather in the Dining Cavern and seeking their dragons in the skies even though she knew that they were gone and that it didn't matter. If it was bothering her, what about Cyradis? And what about K'don?

Her Auntie was smart and strong, and she didn't worry so much about her. But K'don... her cousin was three Turns younger and had always been a bit sensitive. }:Can you see if Maciath's rider is up for a visit?:{ Reyela asked Brandith after drills. The sun was hot and she had a candlemark or two before she'd have to head down to the Dragonhealers to help prepare for the next day's Threadfall. Maybe K'don would be free too.

}:He would be overgleeful to see you,:{ Maciath answered. It had been too long since he had seen Reyela.

Reyela came by K'don's weyr a little while later and knocked on his door. "K'don?"

"Reyela! Come in!" K'don made way for her to come inside and then closed the door behind her. "You want some tea or water or anything?"

He sounded so grown up, Reyela thought. "Water, because I brought you a bubbly and they're sticky."

"Ooh!" K'don's eyes lit up and he hurried to pour two mugs of water from his pitcher. He set his little breakfast table with two plates, pulled out the two chairs, and held out a hand to offer her a seat.

"Ooo, such manners!" Reyela grinned as she sat. "Your da raised you right!"

K'don's face fell at the mention of K'deren. It was going to be a while before that particular wound was healed. But he pretended to smile again quickly enough.

"Of course, he did!" he said. "That's the best way to convince people to keep bringing you pies."

He wasn't fast enough to escape Reyela's sharp eyes. "How are you doing, really? I mean, with your da leaving..."

"I'm kinda angry about it," K'don admitted. "He wanted me to go, too, but I can't. But he's a grown man, and he can do what he wants. And so am I."

"Honestly? I'm kind of mad too," she said after a moment. "I get it, but... I still miss them."

"I'm going to go see them on the next restday," said K'don. "You can come, too, if you want. It's just... not the same as them still being here. I don't get wanting to be anywhere else."

"I... would go back to River Bluff Weyr, if I could," Reyela said quietly. She looked down at her hands, suddenly feeling old. The only way she could actually go back to the 'Bluff was if she could somehow turn back time. She missed how it used to be. "It's actually really hard when somewhere doesn't feel like home."

"I'm sorry." K'don blushed. "Here I am complaining, and you've lost so much..."

"No! It's okay. What happened with your da is also unfair and a lot newer. And I miss him and Grandda too." The greenrider managed a half smile. "And I get it. My da's over at Dragonsfall Weyr, and when he was injured it was really hard not being closer for him and Mai. You just... miss them."

"I just don't get why they had to leave in the first place," K'don whined. "Everything they need was here."

"I wish I knew." There were so many unanswerable questions that kept her up at night. Why the earthquake that levelled River Bluff Weyr had to happen, why K'reyel and Erdenth were hurt, why K'sedel and K'deren left. "But... I'm glad you stayed."

"This is where I belong," said K'don. "So you'll always know where to find me."

Reyela picked up one of the bubblies and blew on it for a moment before taking an enormous bite. Pastry flaked down her shirt and she made a little mewl of displeasure as she brushed it off. It was either that or tear up. Why did K'don have to be so sharding sweet sometimes?! "So," she said, around a mouthful of pie, "Why _do_ you belong here, anyway? Is it because you'll curl up like a sad flower somewhere colder?"

"Well, I would," said K'don. "But this is where my mother is. And if I left her... maybe she wouldn't be anymore." After all, she was no longer his father's weyrmate after _he_ had left her. How could he be? What made Cyradis his mother now was their relationship. If he broke that, then there was no blood and no oath left to keep them together.

"Cyradis is smarter than a flit, you know. She'll still remember to love you even if you aren't here." She said it lightly, although it did give her pause. Maybe Cyradis wouldn't claim her as a niece anymore, either. The Weyrwoman had been hurt, she could lash out. Not at K'don, but Reyela had never been as close to her as K'don was.

"She would remember me," said K'don. "Of course, she would. It's just... she'd remember me leaving her."

"Is that the first thing you want to remember when you think of your da?" Reyela asked gently.

"I'll get to make new memories with him," said K'don. "And, I dunno... Maybe she will, too. It's not like he's never coming backā€" he'll want to see Kendran. But it'll never be the same again."

"Well, no. It won't be the same. But just because it's different, doesn't mean that it's bad. Or worse." Losing River Bluff had been awful, but it wasn't so bad here at Dolphin Cove. Just... different.

"I thought everything I had here was pretty close to perfect," said K'don. "And I don't know why they didn't feel the same way. Maybe someday I will."

"These bubblies are pretty close to perfect." Reyela took another large bite.

"Oh!" Reminded about the pies, K'don took a big bite. And, of course, squidged half the fruit onto the plate. On the bright side, he had the plate.
