The early work Cirina had put in during O'rosin and Aeoluth's weyrlinghood was really starting to pay off. When the candidates heard an interesting vip guest had arrived, none of them could get there as fast as she could.

Aeoluth's landings were still rough, jostling Cirina, but she put on a smile as she slid off the young brown's back. "Hello, you must be..." She gave Aydhara a head to toe lookover, twice, before saying, "You're not the Weyrwoman second of Barrier Lake Weyrhold." She hid most of her disappointment.

Aydhara hardly noticed the words being directed at her. She was staring, open mouthed, at the brown dragon behind the girl. She didn't even look down to see the white strand of shoulder knots that designated the other girl as a candidate. "How do you have a brown?!"

Cirina grinned, “Oh, I just fed him when he was a baby, you know? And gave him baths, right Aeoluth?” She gave the brown an affectionate pat.

Aeoluth snorted in response, turning to butt his big head into Cirina's torso.

Aydhara gasped. "Why hasn't anyone said that brown is an option? They all made a fuss over girls on blues!"

Before Cirina could answer, N’kevyn cleared his throat and said, “We’re the Barrier Lake Weyrwoman Second’s family. And you're candidate…?” he stressed the word before trailing off.

Caught out, she turned to N’kevyn and said politely, “Cirina, sir.” Turning back to Aydhara, she said, “This is my friend, weyrling O’rosin’s, brown. He had a little mishap at the Hatching and I helped out when he was a baby and he owes me like a million rides.”

Oh. _oh_. Aydhara looked visibly crestfallen as she finally glanced down at the knots. "Aydhara, also candidate. And my dad, bronzerider N'kevyn. My Mom needed to stay and help with Turn's End preparations at the Weyrhold. It's like 5 hours earlier there." She looked over at the brown and held out her hand. Aeoluth nudged it roughly, eager for pets.

“Pleasure to meet you, Aydhara. Well, uh, I was sent to show you where you can sit and watch the dolphin show. I hear they're expecting it to be a good one. Oh, and Aeoluth likes it if you scratch him right there under his chin,” Cirina said helpfully. “Would you really want a brown? He's getting so big.”

N’kevyn pretended to be busy tying his boot if Aydhara wanted to pet the brown.

"Yes!" Aydhara said fervently. She patted the offered nose, a little surprised at the force, then moved to scritch the described spot. Aeoluth crooned happily. "I'd like a boy dragon. A dappled blue, preferably, but I wouldn't say no to a big brown boy if they wanted to follow their lead. What about you?"

“I wouldn't say no to a purple dragon,” Cirina said fervently, “I don't care as long as it picks me. Greens seem to be a little less work, though.” Still, she was petting the brown affectionately. Lowering her voice, she said, “I’d have stolen him from O’rosin if it were an option I guess.”

"You should have, he's a good boy. Throw the whole man away." Aydhara whispered back, still scritching. "I suppose there was that one _white_ dragon. I'd take a white one. Big enough to fly Threadfall, though. That one was too small to do much of anything."

Cirina laughed, “Right, any dragon big enough to get the job done. Any color,” she paused. “Any color but gold,” she amended.

N’kevyn began to reconsider the wisdom of letting the conversation continue.
