Cirina burst into her mother’s weyr without knocking, announcing her
presence with a declaration of, “I’m so bored of these lessons. I’m
going to go crazy before the next hatching.” She threw herself onto
her mother’s couch with all the drama her 18 turn old body could
muster. “Maybe I could just run away to another Weyr? Who’s having the
next hatching?”
Even if she could do that, she didn’t want to, not really, she was
just feeling some feelings today. Helping O’rosin had helped distract
her for those first few sevendays, but that had passed a while ago,
and with most of her friends having Impressed in the last weyrling
class, she was lonely. They were off working on flying and
/betweening/, and she was still here, stuck on the ground.
Ciara smiled indulgently. Her daughter had always been a little over
dramatic. "Well," she said slowly. "Would you like snow and no beach?
The next hatching due is probably at Dragonsfall." she half smiled.
"Of course your brother is no longer the Weyrleader so..."
"Ugh, not snow," Cirina shuddered dramatically, "that would be worse
than death." She threw an arm over her eyes and gave a full-body sigh
she had perfected. "I could just get the dragon and then flee as soon
as we graduated. Nothing could stop us," the fire was already leaving
her words. "How did you handle waiting so long?"
Ciara chuckled. She knew that telling any kind of teen that she
couldn't do something was like waving a flag at a giant bovine. It
wouldn't end well. She might think she could just up and fly away but
no dragon alive would leave their queen voluntarily. "Well," she said.
"I wasn't really waiting all that time. I was studying to be a
Harper."
Whatever words of motherly wisdom Cirina had hoped for, that wasn't
it, and she just made a grumbling sound that included a derisive,
"Ugh. Studying." After a moment, she sat up, "How are you doing? And
feeling?" For the moment, she seemed to have vented her angst.
"I'll be fine," she nodded at her daughter. "I saw your father the
other day, he wants to be here for the next hatching so he can see you
Impress." She took a breath, "Would you like that?"
"Yeah, sure, he can come. Someone else to be disappointed if it
doesn't happen again." Cirina scowled for a moment before her
expression softened, "That's not fair. Yeah, it'd be nice if he came."
"Okay, I'll get in touch with him, and sweetie, I'm sure you're going
to Impress. I'm not disappointed in the least, it's just means that
your lifemate hasn't been clutched yet. You have time." Ciara smiled
at her with genuine affection. They looked so much alike she just knew
her daughter would find her lifemate.
Cirina made another dismissive, teenagery noise, "I just wish she'd
hurry up. Maybe Jossenth will cook one up for me if I keep buttering
her up helping with baths." That hadn't worked so far with Panitath,
but that wasn't going to stop her from trying.
Ciara laughed. "I wish it worked that way sweetheart," she shook her
head. "Each dragon makes their own decision. Even a goldrider like
Cyradis can tell you why they choose the way they do. But you have
strong rider's on both sides of your family. You have what it takes."
"Yeeeeah, yeeeeah, I just need to wait." After a moment, Cirina
changed the subject to a happier one and asked, "Hey, mom, could you
and Ellianith give me a ride to Barrier Lake Weyr some restday? I made
friends with one of the candidates there at Turns End, and she said
If I ever get over there, she'll give me a tour. I showed her around
Dolphin Cove and we had a great time."
"Sure sweetie," Ciara said. "I can visit with Timassa and see her
twins. When would you like to go?"
"Oh, I don't know. Soon, while things are slow between clutches. I'll
send Digger with a note and see when Aydhara's free and let you know,
if that's alright?" Bouncing to her feet, she went to give her mother
a kiss on the cheek, "You're the best."
Ciara chuckled, **and so it goes with teenagers.** "Thank you," she
smiled. "You're my favorite Cirina in the world."
