Special Assignment

Characters: Cirina, Sh'del
Description: Cirina stops in for a meeting with the Weyrlingmaster second
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 7 of Turn 12
Notes: Mentioned: Ciara, O'rosin

Cirina wasn't thrilled to be dropping in for a meeting with the weyrlingmaster second, but she wasn't exactly nervous, either. She'd been a candidate since the first day she was eligible, so the weyrlingstaff didn't intimidate her anymore, but that didn't mean she particularly enjoyed direct attention. Sh'del, especially, didn't intimidate her as a person, but he was still Weyrling staff. Between clutches there was less for the candidates to do, and she'd be lying if she said she wasn't slacking, though in her opinion, helping O'rosin out should have earned her extra credit, even if she occasionally skimped on some chores.

Knocking on the door before sticking her head in, she said, "Sir? Did you want to see me?"

Trouble whistled at Digger when they came in. Sh’del grinned and waved her in. The girl’s mother and he were old friends and he had known Cirina since she was a young girl. “Come on in, I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions. Don’t worry, you’re not in trouble.”

Digger gave a quiet whistle back, mindful of his person's ears, and Cirina automatically reached up to touch him to quiet him, used to shushing him in official settings. He hopped from her shoulder to the back of a nearby chair instead.

"Sure. What did you want to ask?"

“Well…” Sh’del leaned back in his chair and studied the girl. “I’d like to know why you help others with tutoring but your own grades are just okay. I wonder if you need some independent study, like a project or something to stimulate your mind.”

Cirina's eyes went wide, and she whined, "That's not fair. You can't punish me with extra work because I was helping. I was just being a good team player! We're only as strong as our weakest link? Or something? Teammwork?" She scrambled for reasons why she shouldn't get more boring hidework.

“I didn’t say extra work, just different work. I’m trying to remember, how long have you been a weyrling now?”

"For like a thousand Turns," Cirina said with a hint of a sulk. "I'm 18 and I've been standing since I was old enough. What do you mean different work?" The teen still sounded suspicious.

Sh’del grinned at her. “I was thinking some of the newer Holder girls could use a mentor to help them adjust to life and freedom in the Weyr, and I was thinking that you are a good choice.”

"Is there any you had in mind? I usually try to be nice to the Holder kids, as long as they aren't all stuck on themselves. That's how I found out O'rosin needed help with his reading," Cirina pointed out. "We just get a lot more holder boys than girls unless there's a gold egg on the Sands."

“There’s a new girl, Leanne by name. She’s from a very small, very traditional Hold and I think she could use a smart, confident candidate like you to help her out and show her the ropes. What d’you think?”

"Sure. I mean, I basically do that anyway, I guess I just haven't noticed her yet," Cirina frowned, trying to place the new faces in the candidate groups. "I guess I'll just try to catch her in the common area and make a point to introduce myself."

“I knew I could count on you.” Sh’del grinned at the girl. One day she’d make a fine rider, just like her parents and brother. “She’s going to be a bit hard to spot, she’s very shy. Here’s her bunk assignment if you can’t find her.” He slid over the bunk chart and described her appearance to Cirina. “The sooner you find her the better. She has very backward ideas of the Weyr that she said her father told her so the sooner she sees how the place works and that we’re not freakshows, the better it’ll be for both her and for us, if she Impresses.”

"She can't be too full of Hold ideas if she's willing to stand right now. I'm sure she'll settle in," Cirina said positively. "Is that all you wanted? I could go try to find her now." So far, her special assignment didn't involve any actual real work, and she wanted to get out while she was ahead.

"That's all, for now." He grinned at her. "Tell your ma I said hi."

"Of course," Cirina said cheerfully as she went to exit.
