Wherry stew vs. meatrolls

Writers: Anna, Cali
Date Posted: 31st May 2006

Characters: Kirranna, F'gol
Description: Kirra tries to talk with Figol about his feelings towards Aletta, but he doesn't find her conversation appetizing.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 11, day 22 of Turn 3

Kirra had _no_ idea how she was going to find the young harper. But decided to start in the dinning cavern, he had to eat _sometime_. She had had no luck finding him until she noticed him walk through the big archway that was the entrace to the dinning cavern. She recognized him by Aletta's description and what she had seen of Figol around the Weyr. She decided that the only way to confront him was to go about it as if she was a curious weyr resident in line with him to get food. So before anyone else had gotten behind him she, as casually as she could, slipped into the next place in line. She watched him get some food and then said, "The wherry stew is the best on Pern," as she saw him avoid the stew. Figol crinkled his nose as he turned to the girl next to him. "It may be the best, but it's _still_ wherry stew. I prefer less stringy meat myself." He added with a smirk as he grabbed a handful of meatrolls and continued down the line. Kirra furrowed her brow as he had his back to her. That had been rather rude, but she would not be intimidated, she had promised her friend she would talk to this Harper, and so she would. "Ah, so you like something more _tough_, that would make sense. And what with you being a growing man you need more than a bit of stringy wherry can put on your bones." She grabbed a bowl of the stew as well as a few meat rolls, "I, on the other hand, can resign myself to having both, so that I can savor the flavor of the stew _and_ have the hearty meat as well." Her blue eyes smiled, challenging him to get a bowl of the soup.

But Figol didn't rise to the bait. All the fun of bantering with the independent Weyr women had lost it's appeal after Aletta. "Well, enjoy your stew and meatrolls then." he said evenly as he walked away to a table out of the way. Kirra momentarily cursed the harper and then her friend for getting her to do this. She grabbed a bit of salad and then nonchalantly slid into the seat across from where Figol had sat. She glared at a harper that had begun to aproach the table, he quickly chose a table farther away from them. "That's interesting that you would choose the meatrolls, Figol." She waited for him to look at her and then offered him her hand. "I'm Kirra a candidate here."

He took her hand out of courtisy, not out of enthusiasm. He had decided to eat away from the other apprentices of the Hall to be alone, and he wasn't too thrilled to have a tablemate. Better to confront her now so she could be on her way, "I would normally give my name in return, but you seem to already know it, and since _I_ didn't tell it to you, someone else did, which means our meeting wasn't by chance. So tell me... who sent you to me and why? Brocksin? Jarktree want to get back at me by having you pour klah over my head or something?"

Kirra frowned thoughtfully at his words. "No, none of them, and I wasn't sent, I was requested to speak with you. I could have not come if I didn't want to." she took a bite out of one of her meat rolls, and then sipped from her soup. "Honestly having something poured over your head might help you out though, it could cool your attitude down a bit." "But as I was saying: It's interesting that you chose the meatrolls." She waited until he gave her his attention, as grudging as it may have been. "You see, you chose the food that was most comfortable to you, you decided to take in to your body what you knew would be beneficial to yourself, help you out." She swallowed a spoonful of her wherry soup savoring the rich flavors. "But you didn't take the soup, something that was outside of your comfort zone, something that maybe was not beneficial but could be pleasing." She locked eyes with Figol, "That's why it makes perfect sense that you ran away from Aletta. _That's_ why your choice of food is interesting."
She smiled, emphasizing her last sentence with her spoon and then went back to eating, waiting for his reply, but still kept her eyes to his. He put down the meatroll he had been about to eat before Kirra had started on her explanation and rubbed his face with his hands in frustration. Finally, he looked back to her and said wearily, "Since it was Aletta who _requested_ that you speak to me, I guess that long winded food speech of yours was somehow supposed to convince me to accept her for who she is?"

Kirra smiled widely, as if he had understood her intent correctly. "Mostly, I don't expect you too accept her by what I say, neccessarily, but more on what you get from what I tell you." she shrugged, "And the soup thing was just something that I figured was a good analogy, more random than anything."

"Well I _do_ accept her for who she is." he said with a frown as he looked at his plate. Any hunger he had before Kirra's intrusion was gone now, replaced by something else. "I just can't be _around_ who she is; it hurts too much. I can't just watch as she goes from one man to another; men who don't care about her and who she doesn't care about either." He stood up, realizing that this _stranger_ was not someone he wanted to be pouring his heart out to. "I need to go, enjoy your wherry stew."
