I'serin

K'mai was on his way out of the dining cavern when a thought occurred to him, and he reversed course to head to the kitchens.

"No, you cannot have another bubbly pie," one of the cooks said as soon as the bluerider appeared with a charming grin.

"Has the Weyrleader eaten yet?"

The staff echoed the question up and down the kitchens. No one had seen him come down for a meal. "Has he sent for lunch?"

The cook shook his head. "We haven't gotten any orders from the Weyrleader today, sir."

"I thought so," K'mai muttered.

A short while later, a polite knock echoed through the Weyrleader's office. "Come in," came the automatic response. Deep in thought, staring at the papers on his desk, I'serin did not look up when the door opened.

A drudge entered, curtsying carefully so as not to jostle the full tray she was carrying. "Good afternoon, Weyrleader. I have your lunch."

"Thank you," he replied, trying to drum up sincerity because he wanted to show his gratitude but failing because he was distracted still. Then, a new thought entered his mental arena, sideswiping all others. He looked at the drudge. "I...do not recall requesting food," he stated, confused. Had he done so and forgotten? No, that seemed highly unlikely of him. He usually just forgot to eat lunch entirely.

A little wrinkle formed between her brows as she set the tray near the edge of his desk. "Well, someone did, sir. Maybe that's what the note is?" Tucked carefully under the largest plate was a folded-over scrap of paper.

I'serin gave her a nod of both acceptance and dismissal. "Thank you," he said. Saibra, if he had to guess. She would be the one who would most likely remember that he had busy days where he forgot to eat, since one of their own little rituals was a lunch that allowed them to take time _away_ long enough to eat. He took the note from the drudge and opened it.

"Even Weyrleaders need to eat." Below that was a smiley face and it was signed "--K'mai".

A bolt of panic shot through I'serin. He took a steadying breath as he talked his mind back from the edge. There was nothing revealing about a simple note that stated that he needed to eat. It was easily something that friends, even less familiar colleagues, did. In all sum, it was a caring gesture and I'serin should neither read into nor panic about it like a neurotic person.

"Thank you," he said to the drudge again as she left. He sat down at his desk and began arranging the food into a more accessible placement. The aroma of food roused an unhappy growl from his belly. As he shoved the first bite into his mouth, he said, **Aluneth, please relay my thanks to K'mai.**

Aluneth did so, adding, }: That was well thought of your rider, :{ to Sebeth.

K'mai, getting ready for a sweepride, smiled from ear to ear when he got the message. He patted Sebeth and asked him to pass on a question.

}:Mine wants to know, is he actually eating?:{ Sebeth asked the bronze.

Aluneth listened in for a moment before replying, }: Yes. And he states that the soup is pleasantly quite hearty. :{

}:Mine says that is what friends are for.:{

K'mai was very pleased he could do something to take care of I'serin. The bronzerider needed more people looking out for him.
