Description: Lyani is not Vandor's best patient, but at least she's fun.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 6 of Turn 12
It was in the wee hours of the morning, so early that some would still
call it night, when Lyani came weaving into the healer’s infirmary on
unsteady feet.
Her left hand was cradled against her chest, but there was a pleasant
smile on her face as she looked around for a healer.
“‘Scuse me? Is’ere anyone here?” she slurred.
For Vandor, he had seen many things during his tenure as a healer, and
as soon as he heard the voice, he had an inkling as part of the
problem. Stepping into the foyer, his eyes fell upon a lovely woman,
her short ebony hair framing her face. Some people had unique
personalities, and this one wore it upon her visage. Observing her
ever so briefly, his eyes dropped down to note the hand and the way
she held it close to her.
“I’m Vandor.” He murmured, his deep voice echoing in the room devoid
of anyone save the two of them despite the softness of it. “How can I
help you?”
“Ohhi,” she smiled, eyes lighting at the sight of a person. Her head
tilted back. “And sir, you are vurrah’ tall. Did you know?” Her hand
was apparently forgotten as she marveled at how much taller he was.
But then her drink-addled brain caught up. “I was Lyani… I mean,” she
giggled, “I _am_ Lyani. Still.”
“Am I now?” Vandor chuckled. Such commentary wasn’t exactly unusual.
“Are you sure you’re Lyani? I wouldn’t want to get the wrong person.”
Even as he spoke, he motioned for the woman to walk toward the back
where rooms waited for those in need of medical attention. He hovered
close, however, in order to provide any support she might need.
Lyani was weaving while she was walking, but managed not to collide
with anything.
“Ohshure,” she slurred. “_Ly_ah_nee.” Saying her name slower would
surely help the man to understand.
She looked down at her hand, still cradled against her chest. What was
it doing there? It looked so.. so… _purple_.
“I think I hurt my hand,” she said to the tall man.
“I think you did too. Here, in here.” Vandor motioned into a room
where they could have a little more privacy. He would tend to her
hand, first, then deal with the other matter. “How did you hurt your
hand?” Carefully making sure she didn’t fall, the healer assisted her
up on the examination table, eyeing the injury.
Lyani strained her memory, even as she looked down at her hand, which
was now between the healer’s. It felt detached from her body, like she
was watching someone else’s hand receive treatment. “I can’t
remember…. Stairs? I think there were stairs involved.”
“I see. Well, there are no stairs in the infirmary, so that’s one
obstacle out of the way.” Vandor’s large hands carefully and gingerly
reached out to take a closer look at her smaller one. “Does it
tingle? Are you able to move your fingers?” No compound break,
thankfully, but that didn’t rule out a fracture.
Even through her drunken daze, a grimace came across Lyani’s face as
she tried stretching out her hand. “Oh,” she groaned. “I think ‘iss
the little one.” She used her other hand to point at her pinky.
Well, it wasn’t enough to tell and Vandor realised she was in no state
to simply be released back home. He would do what he could, but more
steps would only be taken once the woman was sober. “All right, I’m
going to step out for just a minute. Stay here.” He wouldn’t go far,
just step out enough to catch another healer to get some supplies for
him, which didn’t require much more than leaning out the threshold.
Waving down an apprentice who got stuck on the late shift, he set the
young man in search for supplies. Returning to the woman, he
continued to examine her visually for any other issues. “Lyani, how
much have you had to drink tonight?”
“A bottle of _thisss_” she gestured dramatically with her good hand,
“and a ssshot of _that_” she flopped her hand in the other direction.
“Too much,” she sighed with a dreamy little hiccup.
She had most definitely taken in too much. Vandor had a plan in mind,
but one step at a time. First, thing was first, get her to a place
where she could rest, then take things from there. “All right, so
here’s the deal. I’m going to wrap your wrist and stabilise it and
then we’re going to get you a bed here for the night. In the morning,
I’d like to take you to see the dolphins to make sure it’s not a
fracture.”
“Oh!” She brightened for a brief moment. “The dolfffinss are
_ahhhmazing_.” Somewhere in the depths of her blurry memory she was
sure she’d visited them before with a man…. M’trel! That was right.
“Did you'ssay bed? Okay,” she started to fold up right where she was
on the examination table.
“Not this one. I have a much more comfortable bed for you. But
first, I need to wrap that wrist, then you can lie down.” And after a
night’s sleep, they would see the dolphins and hopefully it was simply
a sprain. “Sit up for me, and I’ll get it taken care of quickly so
you can have a nice soft bed and pillow to lie down on.”
“Mmmmkay. So demanding, you are.” Lyani managed to sit upright, even
if she was slumped a bit while her hand was wrapped.
Vandor tried to make quick work of it. At that moment, it was more
important that the woman lay down and let her body deal with the
alcohol. He’d also get some water into to her, but sleep would be the
best thing for the immediate. Once he had the wrist properly wrapped,
he extended his hand to help her off of the table. “Come on, let’s
get you settled.”
“Yes, settled.” Lyani agreed, blindly following Vandor until she was
settled onto a cot. The blanket and pillow were especially
comfortable, she thought as she settled down into them with a sigh.
As soon as the woman lay down upon the bed, Vandor turned and spoke to
one of the apprentices to make sure she was watched and didn’t sneak
off. Once he had informed the night shift of the situation, he took
one last look at Lyani, then left her under the care of other healers.
He’d make sure to follow up with her in the morning.
