I'serin

I'serin

The frigid water drowned his lust but did not drown his emotions.

When I’serin resurfaced, he could hear the wind swirling around Aluneth’s wings as the dragon hovered nearby. Apology, regret, and love radiated from every inch of his bronze hide. I’serin knew that they would need to speak but he was not yet ready to speak at all. He swam another length away, letting the cold drain away his emotions until he was able to approach the situation with his familiar clinical, critical mindset.

It was only then that Aluneth swooped near to scoop him up and carry him up to the top of the cliff. Not the same place that he had taken K’mai -- no, this was one of his other cliffdiving places. Secluded. A place where he could think, alone. As he dried off, Aluneth sat a safe distance away, waiting for his rider to initiate the conversation.

“I love you,” I’serin began with, “but I am very…confused. Angry. Hurt by what happened.” He turned to face the dragon, whose eyes were whirling a dejected saffron color. “I know you mean well. You support me. You protect me. You love me. But I do not understand why what happened today happened.”

Aluneth curled his tail around his legs, reminiscent of someone hugging themselves before delivering unpleasant news, before he explained. }: Sebeth and I have been speaking quite often. While a good majority of it does not pertain to our day-to-day agendas, he did bring up a logic that I could not refute: we practice for Threadfall, why not practice for a mating flight? In particular, one. :{

It took a moment for I’serin to connect the dots. “Chioneth.”

Aluneth mantled his wings, making himself look larger. }: I will not lose to Tirenth. Or Mnoranth. Or Bhelth. :{

Silence settled between them as I’serin followed Aluneth’s train of thought and connected it to the cryptic message he had sent as he had joined in on the green’s flight earlier. “So you are practicing on greens for that moment.”

Aluneth’s posture turned defeated. }: It was…an experiment. I do not think it succeeded. :{

I’serin was quiet for another moment, going over all of the angles and approaches of the scenario. “Success is not always so easily defined,” he finally said, trying to flood his words with empathy. He sighed softly. “I…forgive you. You know that. I would never hold something like this against you.” In truth, he could never hold anything against Aluneth, nor could Aluneth hold something against him. He went over to his dragon to lean his forehead against Aluneth’s cheek. “You continue to love me through my issues. Though I do wish you would wait to experiment for when I am not solving all of the Weyr’s problems.”

Aluneth was quiet for a moment and then rumbled softly, }: The things that make you happy are also confusing for you. And me. I would not change you, I’serin, but I begin to wonder if holding on to the past is worth it still. We are the leading pair of Dragonsfall now. :{

Stroking Aluneth’s eyeridges, I’serin replied, “I do not comprehend where you are going with this.”

}: It is true that I do not like the company of greens. That will not change. But you like K’mai’s company, as a lover not just a friend. That has recently changed for you. But it causes you great conflict because of… :{ The dragon stopped, searching what little he could remember against his rider’s usual emotions. }: Tirenth’s rider. Or something in the past that I cannot remember. Something more than just River Bluff. :{

I’serin did not respond. He let Aluneth continue.

}: I know that we are under great scrutiny as newly risen to our rank. I know that recently there are a lot of burdens on your shoulders. I also know that we can perform in this rank, that this is our time. There are a great many things that worry you and I do not understand why K’mai needs to be one of those worries when he has avowed to help you. He has certainly proven to be a better ally than Tirenth’s rider has. :{

It was I’serin’s turn to feel remorse over his actions. He had panicked, pushing K’mai away. He still resorted to those kneejerk reactions when it came to hiding himself. He would need to do better about that.

}: K’mai has been your friend for Turns. I am sorry that I put that into conflict with my experiment. I will practice in other ways but do not hold this against K’mai. :{

I’serin exhaled softly as he said, “I will not hold it against him. But…I do not wish to speak to him just yet. I…need to think. About what you said.”

}: About? :{
