**Can you see if Denebith’s rider is available to come over?** R’kede
asked his brown. He certainly hoped so. He had made a special visit to
the Vintner Hall for some beer and the trip /between/ had helped keep
it chilled.
While he waited for a response, he moved a few knicknacks from the
side tables to one of the bookshelves. His weyr was practically
bursting with his possessions, but he did try to keep surfaces clear.
Tenebith replied back with more of a feeling that the message was
acknowledged and that they'd be on their way. Ten minutes later the
sound of wingbeats on the ledge heralded A'khal's appearance, a wide
grin on his face. "You called, sir?" He asked.
“Come on in. Grab a seat,” R’kede replied, gesturing to his mismatched
colorful armchairs. Two empty glasses and a plate with snacks were
already on the table. “Look what I got!” He grabbed two beer bottles
and handed one to the bluerider.
A’khal accepted the bottle with an easy grin, turning it over in his
hands to admire the label. “Well, well, much obliged,” he said,
settling into one of the armchairs with a languid sprawl. “What’s the
occasion? Did you hear I put out on the first date?”
R’kede grinned, sitting across from his wingmate. “If my sexual
interests change, you’ll be the first to know. And, there doesn’t need
to be an occasion for us to get together, does there?” He took a sip
of his bottle and made a noise of satisfaction.
"There doesn't, but it ain't often you wine and dine me with all my
favorites. Thought maybe you realized you've been missing a snack,
yourself." A'khal teased, "So there's no reason you got my favorite
beer?"
“There actually is one,” he admitted, still smiling. He drew his new
knots out of his pocket and held them out for the bluerider to see.
A’khal leaned forward, his teasing grin widening into a genuine smile
as his eyes landed on the knots in R’kede’s hand. “Well, I’ll be.
Wingleader, huh? About time they figured out you’re not just good at
looking pretty.” He raised his bottle in a mock salute.
“Congratulations, R’kede. They finally put someone decent in charge.”
R’kede placed the knots on the side table. “I’m still shocked N’vanik
gave me the job.” He shook his head. “Not every Weyrleader would.”
"I hardly expected N'vanik to, either, but that was before he promoted
R'lor. You're a solid choice. You ran the Wing for months when F'larn
took that that bad threadscore. You know what you're doing better than
at least half of the bronzes."
“Yeah, seeing a bluerider Weyrlingmaster definitely gave me hope.” He
took another sip of beer. “I’m glad you think I’ll do a good job
because one of my first tasks is to decide who will lead the Wing with
me. I think we make a good team. The Wingthird position is yours if
you want it.”
"R'kede, headhunting from your former Wing and bribing them with good
beer. That's bad manners, you know. F'larn's going to be _ticked_."
A'khal said seriously, though the barely contained smile betrayed his
teasing. "Of course I'm coming with you. Have you picked a 'second
yet?"
The brownrider felt the weight on his shoulders lessen at A’khal’s
words. “Good. Now we both can celebrate! And, F’larn will be fine.
He’ll probably be excited to promote one or two of the ambitious
bronzeriders in the Wing.” He was downplaying their former
Wingleader’s reaction, but didn’t feel any guilt. F’larn was an
experienced Wingleader and while R’kede didn’t doubt his own
abilities, having a solid Wingthird would make his job a lot easier.
R’kede leaned back in his chair. “I’m hoping you can help identify
someone who would make a good ‘second. Ideally, it would be someone
already in Cyclone Wing. I don’t want to take too long to decide, but
do want a chance to meet everyone in the Wing and observe them in
drills.”
"Probably for the best that you don't pull entirely from other Wings."
A'khal said with a nod, "How about N'tan, then? The man has been
allergic to responsibility for turns, but he's a solid wingrider and
could do it well. His dragonpoker face is really good, so I can only
assume he'd be fine in a crisis. He's a veteran of Cyclone."
“He sounds like a good option,” R’kede said with a nod, committing the
name to memory. “Now, unless there’s any urgent business to attend to,
those snacks won’t eat themselves.”
"Nothing that can't wait until after snacks." A'khal agreed as he
reached for a treat, "Tell me about this Wing. What's the gossip?"
R’kede smiled. “Well, have you heard about B'lyse and Ç'pier? A
trustworthy bluerider told me …”
